ROMANTIC HIGH TEA

During lunch, Mr. Hightower hosts a romantic high tea in the greenhouse for couples. Scone, tea sandwiches and delicate pastries are served, along with several fragrant varieties of tea. Mr. Hightower is particularly proud of a rich black tea with whole dried rosebuds in it, which he's named Horatio's Blend. The rosebuds magically bloom when hot water is poured, and float to the top of the black tea, still maintaining their bright pink colour in the clear teapots. (Mr. Oakes is also in attendance, and delights in telling every couple that Mr. Hightower named a tea blend after him.)

Small wrought-iron tables for two have been arranged throughout the greenhouse. Each table features a white tablecloth and a floral centerpiece, of leftovers from Event Committee's flower delivery, along with rose-printed tea cups and plates, and cloth napkins. Mr. Hightower will be instructing interested couples in tea etiquette. If attendees aren't already wearing their school uniforms (seeing how it's the middle of the day), they're expected to adhere to a cocktail attire dress code.

This is supposed to be classy and romantic. ...Except things go awry when a sweet-natured competition is introduced: Mr. Oakes has crafted two beautiful flower crowns and is ready to hand them out to the "sweetest couple." Hightower immediately regrets letting his husband have input.

HOW THIS WORKS

• Characters must attend high tea as a pair. Mr. Hightower isn't going to argue about whether or not you're actually a "couple," but pairs will be expected to spend the whole time together at a little table instead of mingling.


• Post your pair under the SWEETEST COUPLE CONTEST heading, and play out a scene. For every comment with a romantic gesture, the mods will RNG a number between 1–25 to add to your pair's score.


• One romantic gesture per comment will count for your score. You don't get a bonus for writing multiple romantic gestures in a single comment.


• Up to 10 comments per pair will count for your score, i.e. you only get a maximum of ten RNG numbers to add to your score.


• For the purposes of this contest, the definition of "romantic" will be very loose. It can be verbal or physical, sincere or overly saccharine, but it must be a) something that can be observed by other people, and b) directed at your character's date.


• The couple with the highest score by Thu, Feb 16 at 11:59 PM MT will win the contest!

» Arrival: Bright sunlight filters through the greenhouse glass, turning it warm and romantic. Once a couple is admitted, they'll be shown to their table by either Mr. Hightower or Mr. Oakes. Smartly dressed house-elves will be going from table to table serving tea and sandwiches.

A Swan

Xavier still feels like a dingus, so after the festivities have ended he sticks around to help clean by way of apology. While clearing tables and admittedly looking pretty slick in his crown, Zav eventually finds himself distracted by the swan on the pond.

"Hey, Swan, come here often?" He says, tossing it a bit of cookie, "What's it like being a bird?"

Because Xavier knows that swans can neither speak nor understand English, he goes on, "Sometimes I wish I were a bird. Might embarrass myself less."

A Swan

Eating as a swan is a little weird. No hands, plus the beak, and just... so much neck, which all means there's an adjustment period. Reid's still getting the hang of it, which means this swan is a slightly awkward eater as it tosses back the bit of cookie.

Reid understands. He dreamed of being a bird for years, and so far, it was really meeting his expectations. The discomfort of Valentine's Day and feeling lonely (even knowing that once he's in a relationship he hates it) has barely troubled him today. Being a human has proven over and over again to be kind of hard. No one expects a swan to string together sentences or properly process emotions. He paddles over to the Ribbonfin, who Reid notes won the aggressive PDA competition that Sy skipped because he was still stubbornly pretending he didn't have a girlfriend.

The swan makes a little trilling snort at the boy, which will have to pass for a confirmation that yeah, it's way less embarrassing being a bird.

A Swan

Xavier grins at what he perceives to be the swan's show of solidarity -- who knew waterfowl were such sensitive souls. He feels a bit like a kid; dude, it is super cool to get attention from a great big bird. Or, at least, it is until Zav realizes that between the flower crown and the animal friend he looks like a Disney princess.

He chuckles to himself as he stands, leaving the rest of the cookie for the swan. He's sure to say goodbye before he goes, "Take care, swan bro. Stay cool."
