DANCE OPEN HOUSE

In preparation for both prom and next year, the unofficial dance club is holding an officially sanctioned open house to encourage new dances to join them next year. Casey Patterson has taken on the responsibility of leading the event today, although there will regrettably be no "twerkshop."

It's taking place in the dance studio, where some chairs have been carried in for the audience. Before lessons begin, a number of the dancers give demonstrations of the skills and different styles. Afterwards, anyone who's interested can approach the experienced dancers for lessons or tips.

There's a particular focus on learning to dance for prom (gotta impress your date with some smooth moves!), which some of the dancers may be less enthusiastic about.

RULES

• The demonstrations start at 2:00 PM, and lessons start at 2:45 PM.


• Ms. Thrussell is on hand to oversee. If anyone gets rowdy or disrespectful, she'll show them the door.


• If your dancer is offering help, post them to dance lessons saying so, or reply to threads of people asking for help! Either way, assume everyone got some pointers even if nobody threaded with you. We understand that everybody's busy!

» demonstrations: If your dancer wanted to perform a demonstration, they were given two to five minutes for it. The songs were queued up ahead of time, and must not contain any explicit lyrics.

» dance lessons: If your character is looking for or offering lessons, post here!

» socializing: If you'd like to do any other socializing during this event, it goes here. There are refreshments available in the form of sparkling apple juice and tea cookies. Very fancy!

DEMONSTRATIONS

Ty & Sofia - Contemporary

Ty comes out in front of the gathered students, all grins because he's just so glad to be back on his feet and dancing! He performs a long contemporary piece with Sofia that is divided into four sections, the first of which they perform together, the second of which Sofia performs alone, the third of which Ty performs alone, and the fourth of which they perform together again. It's high-energy and brimming with personality, as is probably expected from this pair.

Once they're done he offers a deep, over-dramatic bow and blows a kiss to Quinn before bounding off of the makeshift stage.

It's difficult to wolf whistle through a grin but Quinn makes it work for both of Ty's performances. Don't let it go to your head, Hawkeswood, some of those whistles were obviously also meant for your blue jay partners.

Ty & Laurel - Tap

When it comes to dance, Ty can't help but overdo it and he appears a second time later in the showcase to perform a second duet with Laurel! Before they start, he brings a small bench out into the middle of the room and smiles at the audience. ~How mysterious!~ The piece that they perform might be recognizable to those with a strong background in classical movies, but otherwise just seems like a cutesy tap number complete with very appropriate lyrics (the song is called Where Did You Learn To Dance?) that Ty and Laurel actually sing while dancing. Like the drama kids they are.

It's obviously a very clever choice. See what they did there? Ty fully embraces the silliness of this whole thing and is enjoying himself immensely.

Rafael & Sun-mi - Ballet

Rafael and Sun-mi stand at the front of the audience, all grace and poise, and perform a somewhat brooding piece to... Bohemian Rhapsody. Maybe they figured this would keep new students' attention better than a classical piece, but for anyone unfamiliar with ballet choreography, it's a little puzzling. As can be expected, they are intense and focused, and clearly classically trained, but their passion and dedication is evident.

Dahlia & Casey - Dancehall

Dahlia and Casey dance earlier than expected, the former having been talked into moving their late performance back to fill Casey's solo slot on the schedule. He's not nervous you're nervous. Despite the cookie crumbs all over Dahlia's face as she runs up to the front several slots early, she's ready for this.

They take the 'what looks like fun?' route and perform a dancehall routine they choreographed to "System" by Popcaan. Full of confidence and energy, the Ebonhide and Coppertale face off in a dance showdown that, yes, includes whipping their flat-billed hats off when they get really into it. A favoured way to pass time in the studio, Dance Club regulars are no strangers to their competitions—they just usually aren't choreographed.

Casey - Contemporary ~Solo~

Casey totally didn't wuss out at the beginning of the showcase. He didn't. Seriously. He just, like, thought that maybe Hales would want to get their piece over quickly. He swears. And then, like, he figured he shouldn't hog all the spots. Promise.

DESPITE WHATEVER REASONS HE HAD FOR STRIKING HIS SOLO PIECE OFF THE SCHEDULE and then writing it back on at the last minute, Casey ultimately steps up to the stage for his performance, a contemporary piece set to Lorde that incorporates a lot of the ballet techniques he's been learning in barre. (But he breaks those perfect ballet lines intentionally and regularly—sorrrrry, Rafael. It had to be done.) He moves with precision and is focused in a way that simply doesn't happen outside the studio. Welcome to Dance Casey.

Laurel -- Pop & Lock ?

Laurel's excited about the showcase! Her solo demonstration, however, is a little less weird and in your face than usual. She knows there's a lot of contemporary going on, so at the last second kind of switches gears for the hell of it.

She does part of a routine like so, but a little more hamming up/posturing. Hell yeah?? Dance?? ♥

Charlotte - Contemporary Solo

Psh, like she's gonna share the spotlight with anyone; she's doing a solo piece. Charlotte struts out to the beat in a black mesh cutout bodysuit with the justification that she's worn far skimpier in real competitions. She's treating this as a real competition, though, even if it's just a showcase of their talent. Her performance is set to Michael Jackson's Dangerous and is filled with plenty of flips and gymnastics to make her cheerleaders proud. It's more of a display of her own skill and talent and not an example of what prospective club members could learn if they joined barre.

But whatever! She did so great! Clap for her!! Clap for her, damn it!!

DANCE LESSONS

Ty & Open

Ty doesn't have a formal class arranged, but he is willing to work with anyone on anything! He's got a playlist on-hand that should accommodate most requests and he's willing to work on whatever people want to work on. With the exception of ballet; Rafael is the ballet guru and any interest in that direction should go to him. But Ty's definitely your man for anything from hip hop to tap to prom prep! Just ask.

When nobody's asking, he's taking the time to talk to the other students, encouraging them to get involved. Dance, he will tell all of them earnestly, is one of the most rewarding things in the world!

Hazel! & Open!

With nothing specific arranged to teach and no routine to perform, Hazel is just here to help out where needed! If she thinks another dancer is more suited to someone's specific needs she'll direct people there if they want, but otherwise she's happy to provide mini lessons across a wide range of styles. She will also happily teach you how to not be a total trash dancer for prom! Nobody wants a trash dancing date, guys.

Casey teaches Miley (open!)

Casey said he was going to teach contemporary, and even if he'd gotten butterflies earlier about dancing that way in front of his Gooseberry peers (WHICH F.Y.I. HE TOTALLY DIDN'T), he told Rafael he would lead the Open House and doggoneit HE'S GOING TO DO WHAT HE SAID HE WOULD DO.

For most of the lessons he's available to help with the prom dancing and tell dancers where to go when needed, but he also set aside some time in the corner of the studio to fulfill his obligations and teach some m'f'in' contemporary dance. Don't worry, he's got joggers over the very-revealing shorts he wore for his showcase solo.

Casey opts for something a little more entertaining for those who don't have any experience: a simplified 30-second version of the "Wrecking Ball" routine he's been working on in his spare time. Although he's a little stilted at first because he doesn't often try to explain most of the moves (but he's DEFINITELY NOT nervous OR embarrassed, REALLY), he relaxes into an instructor's role once he decides to focus on showing and helping instead of telling or explaining.

And he fuckin' loves Miley Cyrus, so there's that.

Laurel & Open

She's teaching a very simple voguing routine and encouraging people to try it for themselves. It may devolve into a casual ~supportive~ dance-off.

Riley! OPEN

Riley is not usually the best friend in the world, and she can't be seen supporting her friends when they get to do a super cool thing if she's even slightly jealous, and she is super bummed about there being no twerkshop, you loser prudes, but she's here! And it's not just for the food! She has at least one cookie shoved in her mouth at all times, and she's bouncing around talking to as many people as she possibly can. Though she can't keep a conversation going for more than like three minutes and she has a distractingly glittery t-shirt that says "VOTE FOR CASEY + RILEY!!!"

Riley might be treating this like a stop on the Riley/Casey Prom Court Campaign Tour.

Which is probably the best way to keep her from ruining this for you, Casey.

I'm behind on my other threads and I don't have time to start another (it's been a super busy weekend and then I have work! Sorry!!) but would anyone like to say their character(s) helped Ennis learn how to dance at the workshop?

Topics he is looking to cover:
1) What do you do when the music's playing but you have nobody to dance with? How do you dance by yourself?
2) How are you supposed to ask people to dance?
3) How does everyone know all the moves to party songs like Crank That? What is The Charlie Brown in the Cha Cha Slide?
4) What do you do if your dance partner is a male? Where do you put your hands? Who leads?
5) How does you follow the other person's lead if you, yourself, do not know how to dance or what they're leading you into?
6) How are you supposed to dance to slow songs? Are you supposed to just rock back and forth until the song ends?
7) How do you dance to uptempo songs without sweating through your suit?
