1:11 AM: NIGHTMARE

EVERY SENIOR ON CAMPUS...

You’re falling, and it shocks you into wakefulness. Except you’re still in your bed, you haven't moved, but your heart beating too fast. It's making you feel feverish, both sluggish and anxious, alcohol and caffeine. All you can recall from the nightmare is a scream, but it wasn’t from a human. It was deep, anguished, and indescribable. Trying to call it back to your mind only feeds the panic.

You’re not alone. You can hear your roommates stirring, and your familiar is wide awake with you, agitated and frightened. There’s static in the air, making you nauseous. You want to cry, maybe you do cry. The feeling sticks to you either way, like a film you can’t wash off.

This feeling slowly recedes as the sound of rain picks up outside. A drizzle at first, then a downpour.

HOW THIS WORKS

• This takes place at 1:11 AM, 6/22, but we’re posting it early so you can write some scenes.


• Only seniors experience the nightmare. Congratulations on winning the water balloon fight!


• Seniors haunted by the uneasy feeling that something is very wrong, but they don’t know what. Falling back asleep will be difficult, but the panic does wear off within a minute or so. They may feel prone to nausea and/or crying, though.


• A rainstorm begins and lasts until mid-morning the next day.


• Animals all across campus are agitated and frightened, so younger years might be woken up if they sleep with their pet. Younger years won’t get the supernatural sense something is amiss, but wow Fluffy sure is upset.

Rosy has a hard time falling asleep most nights. Falling asleep before midnight, like she managed to tonight, had been a miracle. She must have been worn out from the presentation today, all that was left was some stress over a speech. Seeing her parents. Moving on with the rest of her life.

God, okay, maybe that was why she had that dream. Ugh, that scream, it all felt so close, she could taste it in the back of her throat when she woke up.

"What—did—" Avery was talking, she yanks back her privacy curtain to see the rest of the cabin. "Was that—that wasn't a cat." She's a little groggy.

"What do you mean?" She asked, wiping the almost-tears from her eyes, rubbing away the sleep. "I just - had a nightmare - and Binx was going crazy. I thought he woke you up."

Avery felt the dread lifting, and stopped trying to recall what had woken her up so abruptly. Just trying to recall it made her feel worse.

"Can we turn the lights on or something?"

Chloe either sleeps like the dead, or not at all. She had been in the depths of a particularly deep sleep when she was jerked awake by an awful feeling and an even worse sound. She's not alone. Garrus yowls, leaps from the floor to her bed, and immediately starts digging at the blankets to get her up. Chloe covers her eyes, pressing the heels of her hands into her eyes. "No no no no," she mutters, hoping it will just go away, but she can already hear her cabinmates moving outside the curtain. "Oh no," she says, quickly descending from her bunk to puke in the little trashcan beside her desk.

Rosy throws herself over the railing on her bed and onto the floor. "Oh, Chloe, honey," she darts toward her, patting her on the back. Her hands are shaking, but she can only feel right when she's doing something. Why is her heart beating so hard? "Are you okay?"

Ulysses' eyes dart between the prefect and the door, not quite focused and still overflowing. He's not going to put up much of a fight here — truth is, he doesn't know what he's doing. This is one part animal instinct and one part the half-formed memory of a time when 'outside' felt safer. "I-I," he stutters.

"I was just..." Ulysses trails off. He looks down at Rex, now pressed up against him, and gently strokes the top of his head. Maybe if he doesn't look up, y'all won't notice he's been crying. "Never mind."

"Oh, no." Avery isn't typically a puker until someone else throws up. Turning away, she takes a deep breath to keep herself from adding to it.

"Is there any way we can open the window? That... feels like a bad idea but I think some fresh air would be nice." She's resolutely looking away, but she scoots over so she can do her best to reach out to Chloe or Rosy if they need her.

She isn't one to keep snacks in her room much, but she has crackers. "If - I have a little bag of crackers if you think it'll help your stomach, Chloe?
