1:11 AM: NIGHTMARE

EVERY SENIOR ON CAMPUS...

You’re falling, and it shocks you into wakefulness. Except you’re still in your bed, you haven't moved, but your heart beating too fast. It's making you feel feverish, both sluggish and anxious, alcohol and caffeine. All you can recall from the nightmare is a scream, but it wasn’t from a human. It was deep, anguished, and indescribable. Trying to call it back to your mind only feeds the panic.

You’re not alone. You can hear your roommates stirring, and your familiar is wide awake with you, agitated and frightened. There’s static in the air, making you nauseous. You want to cry, maybe you do cry. The feeling sticks to you either way, like a film you can’t wash off.

This feeling slowly recedes as the sound of rain picks up outside. A drizzle at first, then a downpour.

HOW THIS WORKS

• This takes place at 1:11 AM, 6/22, but we’re posting it early so you can write some scenes.


• Only seniors experience the nightmare. Congratulations on winning the water balloon fight!


• Seniors haunted by the uneasy feeling that something is very wrong, but they don’t know what. Falling back asleep will be difficult, but the panic does wear off within a minute or so. They may feel prone to nausea and/or crying, though.


• A rainstorm begins and lasts until mid-morning the next day.


• Animals all across campus are agitated and frightened, so younger years might be woken up if they sleep with their pet. Younger years won’t get the supernatural sense something is amiss, but wow Fluffy sure is upset.

Falling. Usually, that only happened when she was about to fall asleep. Not when she'd been asleep for a while. Waking up, she felt sick - nauseated and tears pricked her eyes. As she sat, shaken and feeling anxious - her cat Binx tore out from under the bed, racing all over the room before jumping in her lap, clearly frightened. She could feel his heart beating too fast. "It's okay, it's okay, shh." She says quietly, trying to pet him as he shook, trying to break from her grasp and find a better hiding spot.

Eventually, he burrowed under a blanket, and Avery sat up still feeling disturbed and a little sick. Around her, she could hear her roommates stirring. "Sorry..." She apologized, thinking it was Binx's fault that everyone was awake. "I don't know what's gotten into him..."

Iliya awakes with a jolt, his heart hammering, his skin hot and prickly. It's hard to breathe. There's squeaking underneath his pillow, he twists, still half-blind in the darkness, to find Yo-Yo and scoop the mouse into his hands. Iliya has had nightmares before, but none of them have ever woken him up like this. He never wakes up like this.

Something's wrong. Something is wrong.

He can hear the others stirring in the other corners of the cabin. Iliya grabs his bed curtain, and pulls it aside.

There are a few small, sad noises coming from Ulysses' corner of the cabin — an almost pig-nosed grunting of a very frightened lizard and then, underneath that, the softly hitching breathes of his equally petrified boy. Ulysses is no stranger to waking in a panic, but there's something about this night that feels different, worse. Sick sweat on his forehead and a too-small feeling in between his ears that make him feel like he's four years old and under the weather again. Makes him want to cry out for his mama.

Somehow, he manages to remember where he is, remember that he's grown now and at school and he can't do that sort of thing anymore. The realisation does nothing for hummingbird flutter in his chest and he sniffles and wipes his eyes with the back of one trembling hand. Oh god, he wants to go home. He wants to go home.

There's another upset hiss from Rex's enclosure and it mobilises Ulysses into action. He throws back his covers and runs for his pet, grabbing for him with the urgency of a parent pulling their baby from a fire. Rex, uncharacteristically, wriggles and squirms; Ulysses just holds on tighter, cradling him to his chest as he throws back the curtain and skitters, barefoot and in his button-up pyjamas, for the cabin door.

Like the others, Casper comes out of the dream still disoriented and sweating and hearing the fading sound of that scream. He sits up in bed, pulling in ragged breathes as he forces himself to stop trembling and tries to will his eyes to adjust to the dark. He can hear the others moving restlessly and the familiars stirring. He can hear the distinct hiss as Nell attempts to play dead in her enclosure, something that she only does when she's afraid. "Fuck," he mutters, touching his face and pushing his unkempt hair back before he finally begins to climb down from his bunk.

Almost immediately, though, he realizes that there's another figure moving in the dark. Climbing down the ladder, going to the terrarium near Ulysses' bed, removing Rex. And heading for the door. He still hasn't fully regained his composure and he still doesn't understand what's going on, but that doesn't mean that he can't put this together. He moves to intercept the other boy, stepping between him and the door and snapping, "What the fuck are you doing?" Ulysses Quayle isn't getting by him.
