For anyone who was concerned, LARP Club is officially returning for its fourth year with a new teacher sponsor, Mr. Elmasry! We won't have a meeting until next weekend, on account of Quidditch and Cheer tryouts, but that just gives you all time to work on your character sheets.

If you've ever been interested in Live Action Role-Playing, there's no better time than now to join. I promise it's easier to pick up than D&D. (But if you are looking for D&D, I know there's a dedicated group in Gaming Club who's always happy to welcome new members!)

[WARDED TO LARP CLUB]
Our club founder graduated and our teacher sponsor left the staff, but I promise LARP is now in good hands with its remaining veteran players. We convinced Mr. Elmasry to take over for Mr. Pennywise, and he'll be playing Mad King Pennywise's only heir and the new, untested ruler of the kingdom. Mr. Elmasry is a LARP newbie, so it'd be great if a couple of students could volunteer to walk him through how everything works.

Also, it might be nice to send Mr. Pennywise something to thank him for the years he spent as our benevolent if unpredictable monarch. Maybe a card?

Too bad you guys have to hold your Larping at the same time as Outdoor Exploration. I kind of liked the bit you showed me. I guess you'll get by fine if I don't join, though. Plenty of other people to impress with your smooth as fuck moves.

I wish I had the time, but I need to ensure I have my marks high enough to qualify for Occlumency and Animagus Studies next year. I know I can only take one, but I want to have the freedom to consider both over the summer. You know, if I decide to come back.

Is Mr. Elmasry nice, then? He seemed so on Monday, but it's hard to tell the first day. Maybe he's trying to lull us into a false sense of security.

Everyone gets the chance to be impressive in LARP. Our guiding ethos is that everyone should feel like they're a hero.

And yes, it is too bad! We've tried moving LARP to Sundays, but people often end up cancelling or leaving early to write essays which are due Monday morning.

A hero, huh? I feel like you're trying to give me a pitch, but honestly the demonstration was enough.

Not surprising, you're all smart nerds who never forget essays and put off fun things to keep your amazing grades and ensure your future careers. So uncool. Outdoor Exploration would never have this problem! Hmmm, maybe ours should be the club that moves to Sunday.

I hope you do. Classes really do become even more interesting starting in junior year, and I've always heard good things from my friends taking Occlumency or Animagus Studies. I wish I had time to sign up for an advanced study myself.

I wasn't lucky enough to get Potions until today, but I did enjoy talking to him. He seems quite easygoing? It didn't take him much convincing at all to come play with us, even though he'd never heard of LARP before today.

Yes, it probably looks a bit ridiculous that everyone in LARP is only pretending to be able to cast spells when we can all literally cast spells. But that's part of the fun.

Usually there's more adventuring and less of that during campaigns. Also deadly combat, treasure hunting, unlocking ancient artifacts, and navigating tricky political situations.

I tried recommending that everyone work on homework and projects during free periods, but it didn't take. Still, Outdoor Exploration was here first, and usually there's not too much overlap between LARPers and people who want to take two hour hikes. Which isn't to say we wouldn't be glad to have more of you.

Yeah, but it's kind of harder waiting a long time to play, so there's always that.

I think they're okay? Nothing terrible's happened yet, so that's good. How are yours?

We play out in the woods. Sometimes, if it's necessary for a tavern scene or whatever else, we might bring it into the lodge, but it is a very public, appropriate, "sometimes there's a teacher watching" activity.

Okay, okay, that all sounds very fascinating and very topic changey. So give me an example of something that might happen when you LARP. Sell it to me.

We could combine the two! Go on an overnight LARPing expedition. Everyone stay "in character" all night! (Did I use "in character" right?)

A bit like that, yes! However, new players tend to get self-conscious if there's an audience. It's easier to get into character if everyone else around you is doing it too. But if you really wanted to spectate, we could find a relatively undemanding and out-of-the-way character for you. Perhaps a shopkeeper?

Hmm... Any princesses would have to be from a foreign kingdom, since our established canon is that our monarch had only one child, and he'll be played by Mr. Elmasry. But given the complex relationships with our neighbours, it's quite possible some princesses could find their way into our adventures.

Technically, it's not secret. And it's not... necessarily "all over the place." Sometimes LARPers enjoy romantic storylines, and may choose to play out certain aspects of that storyline depending on their comfort level.
