Who: Anuhea and Tabitha
When: Today
Where: Ribbonfin Senior Girls Dorm
What: A meeting
Warnings: None. Just awkward
Well, Tabitha thought as she sat down at her desk, at least she was finally on her own. She had mostly enjoyed her final return to Gooseberry, but given events of the end of Junior Year, she hadn't had time to really decompress and adjust. It was not a pleasant feeling, so she had come back to try and get that much valued alone time.
Idly running her hand over the green cushion of her chair, she looked out across the cabin and took it all in. One more year, she thought. One more year, and she would be out of this place and expected to function as a real adult.
Maybe she would luck out and the cabin would be empty. Maybe everyone else was off doing something. It did not appear that would be the case the moment she open the door and let it close behind her. She saw Tabitha sitting at her desk. If she turned around at that moment it would be obvious she was trying to avoid Tabitha, and she didn’t want to making things worse. Though would sitting alone in silence together make it any better?
“Hi.” Anuhea squeaked out before she went for her bed climbing up. Perhaps if she was higher she would feel better. She had her book she read tucked under her pillow and she pulled it out. Though she just looked at Tabitha instead, feeling like she should say more.
Tabitha jumped as the door squeaked open, the look of shock on her face replaced by the slightest of scowls as she saw who had joined her. Although she was clearly displeased, her long background in etiquette and polite behaviour saw her wipe the look quickly from her eyes. “Anuhea” she replied, a little stiffly, though much less snarky than she wanted to be. Apparently she was disciplined after all, Tabitha mused to herself.
Sitting up as straight as she could in her chair - the Hawaiian girl had the edge on her both in physical and literal height, she attempted to look dignified as she rummaged in her bag for her own book.
At least she said her name right? Should she say something? Tabitha was just sitting there doing her own thing. Anuhea looked at the book thinking maybe she could just read and forget about Tabitha, just co-exist like she was supposed to. “Would you like me to go?” Anuhea finally squeaked out. Obviously, Tabitha was here first so like maybe she should have turned around and it would have been less awkward.
Tabitha stilled for a moment. Anuhea was trying to initiate a discussion of some sort, but she was not prepared for that. What should she do?
She just about managed a dignified expression, turning her head slightly before replying. “This is hardly my exclusive dorm. Do what you like.”
Like you did when you kissed my boyfriend, she thought.
“Okay,” Anuhea let the kay portion of the word trail for a bit too long. So she could do whatever she liked, which mean awkwardly sitting in the dorm with Tabitha. Great. She climbed down from her bed and looked more directly at the girl. “I’m aware you hate me. Though I would just like to ask,” Anuhea paused holding her book to her chest not sure how to find the words. “Is this what it will be the entire year. Just want a heads up. Awkward silences and no talking? That’s fine by me, but just wanna know in advance if I should just make a habit of avoiding the dorm and your areas as much as possible.” Anuhea wasn’t going to sit around and just deal with awkward silences all year. But if Tabitha didn’t want to see her or talk to her at any point this year, then she would do her best to avoid her. If Tabitha thought at any point they could talk, then Anuhea would do that too. But right now Anuhea really didn’t even want to be in the cabin at all.
At the dragged out sound, Tabitha sensed either sarcasm or bitchiness (whether this was fair to Anuhea was another matter). She slowly swivelled around on the chair and looked at her dormmate, a look of disbelief on her face.
“So, you want me to predict my feelings and what I want for the year, huh? Tough, because I can’t do that. You want your life to be easier, then maybe try thinking about how this is for me, because I literally did nothing wrong. I want to move past this, but on my terms.”
She was hardly going to be able to forgive, she felt, if she was being pushed, pushed and pushed some more. Quite the opposite, really.
“Whatever,” Anuhea started to walk towards the door. “I’m fine with us being silent, I really am.” She hesitated a moment. “I’ll just avoid you as much as I can.” Which would be a challenge, “And if you ever want to talk to me, I’ll be around.” The words I’m sorry were on the tip of her tongue, but she didn’t let them fall out. She had said them already and they didn’t do any good. “But it is entirely on your terms Tabitha.” It had to be. Anuhea had accepted what she had done over the summer and had come to terms with it. Tabitha needed to handle her own feelings her own way.
Tabitha couldn’t resist rolling her eyes there, though she made sure to not be looking at Anuhea when she did so. Hadn’t she already said that it was up to her terms? In Tabitha’s opinion, anyway, this should be obvious. But, it seemed, people hadn’t always acted the obvious around her of late.
“Well… good. Because I’d rather not yell or say something unnecessary” Tabitha said simply, perhaps her only concession yet towards feelings other than her own, even if it was as a sop to her own conscience.
“Okay.” Anuhea sighed and walked towards the door. She would just come back when it wasn’t just the two of them, when it was safer. It was taking a lot to tell her that she shouldn’t dwell on regrets. Though she looked at Tabitha before she left and it made her feel like shit, the first time since she had got here. She thought she was over the feeling like shit. Anuhea walked out the door and let it shut behind her.
