QUIDDITCH: March 19, Match #8

AZURCREST

RIBBONFIN

The sun is shining, the snow is melting and everyone is (more or less) recovered from Friday’s festivities. A good thing too, considering the professional scouts in the audience, who are either taking their first or second look at some of the best Quidditch players Gooseberry has to offer. Winter cheer uniforms have been tossed out in favour of short skirts and blinding white sneakers, and it appears cheerleaders on both sides have learned a thing or two from collaborating with their rivals. Captain Ogletree’s worked in more showy tricks and elaborate flips, proving her squad’s just as athletic as any other; while Captain Prince’s people have perfected their coordination for today’s routine, their pompoms shaking as they show off some sharp new dance moves before getting to the tosses.

Ribbonfin and Azurcrest opened the Quidditch season in October, and this rematch kicks off much the same way, with Chaser Alapai grabbing the Quaffle first, and taking it down the field for Chaser Fairchild to fling right past Keeper Goshawk’s glove. But the Azurcrest Beaters are ready this time, and Hobbs and S. Delgado spend the first minutes of the match quickly securing the two Bludgers, and turn their sights to disabling Chaser Valentine. While Valentine shows off some impressively nimble flying to avoid breaking her arm again, the concentrated assault is enough to throw off Ribbonfin and allow Chaser Castillo to swoop in and win the next goal for Azurcrest.

Hobbs/Delgado work well in conjunction with Chaser Kramer, who’s swooping and swerving around the Pitch, trying to draw the attention of Ribbonfin’s Beaters. Quick-flying Beater Fanning has the better luck getting in between the opposing Beaters, but try as she might, she can’t land a hit on Kramer. Half of her attention on the chaos hobbling her team, Keeper Davenport has an early slip, and allows Chaser Key to put away two more goals in quick succession, taking Azurcrest to a 30–10 lead. Finally, it’s Beater R. Delgado who nearly rams into his sister trying to steal a Bludger from her, and lands a hit on one of the Azurcrest Chasers.

Castillo takes the blow to his chest but stays on his broom, although he does seem rather winded when he misses his next shot against Davenport. The wind back into their sails, Fanning/Delgado focus on teamwork again, and successfully disrupt Hobbs/Delgado enough to regain control of the Bludgers on the field. They might only be sophomores, but it’s never too early to impress talent scouts, and the two of them send Kramer, Castillo and Key scattering for the next five minutes. Chaser Valentine is back on track, and she leads her Chaser girl squad to tie the game and then some, putting Ribbonfin at 50–40 after less than forty minutes of play.

It’s been a remarkably quick game so far, with the bright red Quaffle jumping from hand to hand, back and forth across the Pitch, and iron balls zinging through the air so fast it’s a wonder that only Castillo earned some bruises. This match is also Seeker Bright’s chance to redeem himself, after losing the Snitch against Gray the last time they met, and losing the Snitch entirely in his last match against Ebonhide. He gets eyes on the Golden Snitch first, fluttering high up near the stands, and holds back, not wanting to tip off Gray so early in the game. Although his captain appears to have recovered, as Keeper Davenport starts putting down every Quaffle that comes her way, blocking a record eight shots in a row from Azurcrest.

The Golden Snitch jerks towards Mrs. Bloom’s place in the stands, Gray turns her broom towards it, and Bright is off, speeding hard for the win. At this point, the score is only 80–50 for Ribbonfin, not yet enough points to knock Ebonhide from the top of the rankings, but Bright refuses to add another loss to his Seeker record. Gray is right behind as they zoom right at the headmistress and the eagerly watching scouts; S. Delgado holds off on hitting her Bludger, not wanting to injure anyone in the audience; while Fanning uses the commotion to send the other one to hit the back of Chaser Key’s broom, right in the middle of him readying a goal. He ends up losing control and crashing into the leftmost Ribbonfin goal post, while Fairchild flies right under him and steals the Quaffle.

Meanwhile the Snitch veers sharply, and the Seekers turn to follow, just narrowly skimming over the crowd. Seeker Gray makes a point of staying just a couple feet behind her opponent, allowing Beater S. Delgado a clear shot to knock him from the sky—or try to, anyway. Bright swerves and her Bludger skims the back of his robes, and Gray pulls up to give time for the Snitch to slip away, while below, the Ribbonfin Chasers are widening their lead, 90–50. Between Bright and Key, Key’s definitely the worse injured, but the chipper young Chaser staunches his bloody nose, insisting it’s nothing but bruises.

Ribbonfin’s Beaters nab themselves a full set 14 minutes later, when Fanning and R. Delgado finally crack Kramer with a Bludger in the bicep, hard enough to leave a mark and put the Quaffle back into the enemy’s hands. Although all the Azurcrest Chasers can still fly, they’ve noticeably slowed down—between their bruises and Davenport’s excellent goalkeeping, Ribbonfin is maintaining their momentum, with a score of 120–60. Only Kramer and Castillo managed any goals in the past 20 minutes, so Captain Gray makes the call to bench Key and put in Reserve Cunningham. The injection of fresh energy helps, but Alapai, Fairchild and Valentine are still going strong, and they eventually pull ahead to 150–90.

The next time the Snitch appears, it’s 106 minutes in the match, and Chaser Castillo’s just scored, for a neat 100 point total for Azurcrest. Seeker Gray spots it first and makes a split-second decision, speeding off with the intention of tying the game. Bright follows right behind when the Snitch spins between the weaving Chasers—Gray narrowly misses crashing into Kramer and Bright edges forward, coming shoulder-to-shoulder with her—Alapai catches the next Quaffle and rockets towards the other end of the Pitch—the Snitch arcs upward and over them—Bright tries to pivot hard, reaching for it—Goshawk leans forward, waiting to intercept—Gray swiftly climbs onto her broom, knees then feet on the wood—Alapai winds up a throw, then passes straight across to Valentine—Bright grabs for Gray’s legs, Gray grabs for the Snitch—Goshawk dives for the goal, too late, as the Quaffle goes through—and Gray slips from her broom, only to be caught by Bright, both hands around her gloved wrist. She looks up at him, her smile hard and grim, then back down at the glittering Snitch in her hand.

Whether you’re a player, cheerleader or spectator, post below with your character’s reactions! If you wish to post separately about the game, please use lj-cuts and mark for spoilers for the first 24 hours, so no one sees the result before reading the official match description. Now with sections! Please pretend I posted this in a timely manner. Again, Mr. Thorn will insist that students avoid bothering the scouts, but if you want to say that one of them took interest in your character’s talents after the game, feel free!
