Jeremy finally found his way through to the grotto after battling with the forest paths for a good half and hour. Was it just him or did the path to the grotto not use to take that long? Regardless, he was somewhat relieved to spot Asher sitting by the fire.
He went right up to his friend and sat himself down beside the guy. "I think the grotto was trying to mess with me. I'm not even kidding. I spent the last half hour trying to find this place even though I have been here what like a hundred times before?"
Then, slinging a loose arm around asher, "Tell me there's something interesting happening around here for my troubles."
By the time Jeremy arrives Asher was one and a half beers deep and considering leaving already - he'd come at the urging of his cabinmate, who had not arrived yet, and cutting his losses and crawling back to their cabin didn't sound like the worst idea. But then Jeremy was at his side and he figured it was worth hanging around for a bit longer, at least.
Not arguing in the least about the arm slung around his shoulder, Asher gave a lopsided shrug. "...there are kissing games?" He, of course, knew those weren't exciting given that they happened every grotto party. "You did take a while to get here, though. You sure you weren't just stalling so I'd be stuck here alone and have to talk to other people?"
Jeremy screwed up his face a bit at the idea of kissing games. "Okay that's not gonna happen until I've at least had a couple beers in me first," he said honestly. And speaking of which, he reached over to steal one of Asher's collected beers. He had some catching up to do.
"Very cute," Jeremy said to the idea of him purposely stalling. "But if I was stalling, I'd take actual credit for it." He took his first sip of the beer and looked at Asher properly. "Why is there someone here you'd want to talk to? Or kiss? Or have a very public make out session with? Because you can tell me, buddy. You know I'd make it happen for you." Was teasing but not actually a lie.
Despite himself, Asher let out a soft snort at Jeremy's expression, taking a swig of beer after toying with its tab for a few moments. "Well the kissing games are normally sort of interesting, at least? Once you've gotten yourself in the mindset." And by mindset he, of course, meant inebriated enough.
"Totally fair, you're not one to not take credit where credit is due. As for me.. nope, don't have my eye on anyone. As usual." Though there was a bit of force behind his words they were mostly intoned with humor of the exasperated kind. "I know you're trying to help me out but I promise, I am completely fine being single and uninvolved." Technically a bit of a fib, but Asher hoped that Jeremy wouldn't be able to tell. "...how are you feeling, though?" Asher left Vee unsaid.
"Oh they're plenty interesting," Jeremy agreed. "That's not the problem. It's more a general 'I'm not drunk enough for this' comment. I'm supposed to be all respectable and all that jazz now." Also the fact that sober right now, Jeremy still had quite a few things on his mind to be able to truly enjoy things. Mostly, coming to the party at all had been him wanting to hang back and relax with his bud Asher. Which, admittedly, Jeremy had not been doing for awhile.
"I'm not disputing that," Jeremy said after taking yet another generous swig of his beer. "But you could be single and uninvolved and also having fun on the side, is my main point." Because they were in high school. And there was only so much of taking themselves seriously that could happen. Jeremy made it a point to check in with Asher because he knew his friend was the sort to bottle stuff up. He had been getting an odd sort of Feeling about Asher since the guy came back from springbreak. His friend had definitely not been his cheeriest, that was for sure.
The topic of Vee hung in the air like an ominous cloud. "Not great. But give me a couple more beers and that's going to change." He cast an eye over Asher's unfinished can. "Speaking of, finish that, please. You need to get to that state where you're tipsy enough that you can't fend off any nefarious plans I have for you thanks."
Asher nodded in understanding - he wasn't one for sober kissing games either. "Hey, don't drink your problems under the rug," was the half-hearted scolding he delivered as he took a long drink of his beer. "And I can be single and completely uninvolved. We're graduating soon, getting tied up in something doesn't seem like a great idea. Plus you know me, I'm too much of a sap for flings." Once again, not entirely true, but he was hoping that too would go under the radar. It was mostly true, in any case. And he really wasn't in a state for hooking up.
"I think you're just projecting, so your need to find me someone is sweet but unwarranted. Focus on yourself, dude. I promise I don't need a wingman." Still, Asher found the concern endearing, as he normally did. He quirked a smile. "Nefarious plans? We're at that point already? I didn't think I was doing that poorly."
