Promposal: All I Do is Dream of You

[Posting this early for Saturday because I'm not sure what my schedule will be like. Sorry!]

PROMPOSAL: All I Do is Dream of You

During lunch on Saturday afternoon, Ty is noticeably absent and Rafael leaves before the meal is over. Shortly after his departure, though, Rafael reappears wheeling in a very large, very elaborate cake. How interesting! He steers the cake through the cafeteria and stops in front of Quinn's table. Just when people are beginning to talk and chatter curiously about this odd display and just before Quinn or anyone else at her table can get up, Ty bursts out of the cake (not a real cake as it turns out, sorry gang!) with the word 'PROM?' written on his shirt in bold, sparkling letters.

Grinning at his girlfriend, he leaps out of the cake. As he does, music begins to play and several students from nearby tables (Vee, Laurel, Hazel, Casey, Kenzie, Sun-Mi, and Rafael!!) run over to join him and begin to dance. The song is an absurd number from the play and film Singin' in the Rain called All I Do is Dream of You. The dance is modified from the version in the original film, both to be more modern and to be more appropriate for the inclusion of male dancers, resembling this. It's all very enthusiastic, very silly, and very energetic. Unsurprisingly! As the number ends, rather than scattering with the other dancers, Ty does a quick little solo that brings him closer to Quinn, spins, and drops to one knee in front of her. He's beaming (and maybe laughing a little, especially if she is).

What do you say, Quinn?!

Rafael was not going to dance but then Kas said Kenzie/Uly was official and I changed my stance.

Is this more because of Rafael being part of this dance or because Ty asked her to prom? ;) One of these answers may break his heart.

The day's standing is like 75% because of prom, 25% getting to see Rafael partake in a silly dance.

His heart is definitely intact, then.

Ooookay. I have to get to bed! I'll try to check this before the con tomorrow and keep an eye on it in case anyone has questions or whatnot~

Chris doesn't regret not skipping lunch.

Quinn's multitasking when the cake is rolled in, one hand on food duty and the other writing in her senior project notes. She doesn't take notice at first but looks up when it acts suspicious; it doesn't stop in the middle of the room, or at the edge—you know, normal giant cake business.

Is Stamper going to burst out of it and perform a striptease for some poor, oblivious new crush? ... If that's the case, then why the fuck is Rafael wheeling it out? She looks to Leo for confirmation that someone knows what the hell is going on. No, negative, no one knows what the hell is going on.

... Oh. Good. God.

Her kneejerk reaction is to be embarrassed. So embarrassed. She wasn't expecting this. But the other dancers and the fucking enthusiasm and how elaborate it all is quash the embarrassment and she watches the performance with a very endeared smile despite the hand against her forehead. She fell for the peppiest goddamn cheerleader Gooseberry has to offer, and displays like this are just... a fact of life now. And goddamn, she's into it. ~~She's also into watching Ty dance. This has been a good week for that, a good week indeed.~~

Quinn heaves a sigh, obviously for show. "Ty, yes. And I love you, but," She lays her hands on either side of his face and leans in to whisper through her grin, "You're a fucking lunatic." This is obviously not a bad thing; and then she kisses him because why the hell not.

(Sidebar: To spite Chris and his intervention, she's pulled an old sweater from the bottom of her trunk and wears it proudly all day. This is what she was wearing for the promposal; dressed to the nines.)

Grinning and laughing, Ty doesn't seem to mind this assessment. Especially not after Quinn said yes. He returns the kiss with obvious eagerness and teases, blatantly unashamed of this ridiculous display, "So long as I'm the fucking lunatic that's taking you to prom." Then he presses his lips to hers once more for good measure.

Promposal Accomplished!

Is very impressed and laughs and claps with everyone else. It's all VERY over the top, and VERY Ty, and he's happy for them.

And then Leo looks at the cake-pusher and the very vivid fear that this kind of thing is what is maybe expected of when asking him to prom takes hold.

Oh god. He doesn't want to jump out of a cake.

Well, golly, Miss Prince. It's awfully hard to clap for these fine performers with a lap full of girl.

Just kidding. First of all, Ulysses doesn't clap so much as whistle his approval with his fingers like a goddamn animal. Second, he's obviously pleased at this development — pleased... and also kind of flustered. ~~If he didn't know better, he'd say Kenzie LIKED making him blush. OH WAIT.~~ Play it cool, Quayle. He's honestly not sure what to do with his hands here, and after a split second of panicked hesitation, rests one of them on Kenzie's leg. And, just 'cause he likes you, its not the one that went into his mouth.

Hopefully, no one tries to ask him anything important. because the blood supply to his brain at the moment is tenuous at best.

Kenzie drapes one of her arms around Ulysses' shoulders. Her heart is pitter-pattering quite a bit, and it's not all because of the high energy dance number she just finished. She's silent for a few seconds as she recovers and the cafeteria returns to semi-normal.

"Hey there," she says breathlessly, attempting to sound as casual as possible about the position she's put herself in.

"Hey stranger," Ulysses replies, and if he were thinking clearly, right now he'd be hoping against hope that Kenzie couldn't see the dopey grin on his face. However, since he's seconds from stroking out, he just laughs a little, leans into her — giving in to his dumb lizard brain's suggestion to get as close as possible. She can probably feel his own heart making double-time, if she pays attention. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance."

PERFECT.

Kenzie leans into Ulysses without thinking about it too much. If asked, she probably wouldn't call Ulysses' expression dopey, but might use a few other embarrassing words in its stead. The unguarded happiness she sees on his face is a contributing factor to why she crosses her legs in towards Ulysses for an extra little scooch of closeness.

"The same to you. Come here often, sailor?" she asks in her smokiest voice.

"Oh," Ulysses answers, tone light, as he looks around at the cafeteria where he's eaten lunch most days for the past several years. "I might've been by once or twice." Once of the other dancers — Ulysses is a little too distracted to notice exactly whom — pushes the remains of the fake cake past them. "Never been so exciting as this. That was one helluva dance."

God help him, he never gets tired of this back-and-forth. If he knew the original film, he'd be quoting it. Thankfully for all parties, he doesn't, and thus, Kenzie is spared his attempt at a mid-Atlantic accent.

"Thank you. Ty's got a flair for the dramatics that I'm more than happy to indulge." Mackenzie exhales deeply. As her pulse slows, she knows she's sweatier and more dishevelled than she'd normally like to be while this close to someone she clearly has a crush on. She imagines her face must be shiny, and her hands too warm. None of these concerns show in her expression. "You'll tell me if I get too heavy, won't you?"

"Cheerleaders." Ulysses says the word like like a small town kid imagining the Taj Mahal — as if the very concept amazed him and yet, was almost too foreign to comprehend. "I'm forever in awe."

If she's sweaty, he certainly isn't bothered. As a matter of fact, it's taking the overwhelming majority of his willpower not to blurt out something mortifying like 'you smell nice.' Besides, as far as he's concerned, seeing Kenzie the slightest bit disheveled is a rare treat. Sometimes, he feels like such a mess next to her... and not just because his hair gets all tousled by the end of the day.

"I'm comfortable," he reassures her. His legs could literally fall off before he told her to move. But as selfish as he is, he isn't a monster, so after a half-beat, he adds, "You are too?"

It doesn't take much to convince Kenzie to stay exactly where she is. No one is actually comfortable sitting in someone's lap, she thinks. Neither is the person being sat on. However, there's more to it than bony legs and a bony ass being sharp and awkward together. There's casual intimacy. Maybe there's a little bit of romance, if you go in for that sort of thing. And when Mackenzie looks down at Ulysses, she thinks that maybe she could be the kind of girl who does.

"Of course I am." She smiles a private smile, voice slightly more subdued. "This is the best seat in the house."

He catches Kenzie's smile, and there's something about it that makes everything suddenly feel private and special. Ulysses clears his throat. Glances down and away, ears pinking up again. Oh gosh. "This view's not so bad either," he mumbles.

He likes Kenzie, likes her a lot, with an aching sincerity that leaves him flush with embarrassment at his own stupid emotions. He's kind of afraid it shows in his face. Up close like this, there's probably no escaping it — Ulysses isn't completely blind to his own faults, and he knows that, for all he tries to hide it, he's always been an open book. Is she laughing at him? He resolves to be okay with it, if she is. Glances back up.

She's still looking at him, the same difficult to pin down smile on her face. She puts her hand on his shoulder where the other is already resting, closing the loop around his neck. She's wagering the embarrassment she sees in him is good, because if it's not... Well, she doesn't know what she'll do. (A small voice provides the answer: she'd be disappointed. Far, far more than she'd want to admit.)

"I'm glad you caught the dance." She taps a nail on his shoulder thoughtfully. "I couldn't ruin the surprise, so I had to leave it up to fate."

By some minor miracle, Ulysses seems to be escaping this encounter with ego intact. He doesn't see mockery when he peeks back up at Kenzie's face, and he matches her smile as relief washes over him. Shakes his head, almost imperceptibly, as if it'll clear the fog in his brain. He's not sure what came over him there, but the tap-tap of Kenzie's nail seems to pull him back to reality. He can make conversation, at least.

"You know, I was actually gonna skip lunch? Must've been divine providence at work." He gives a small half-shrug. "Glad I got to see it. You were real good." It's genuine praise: rarer than his usual crowing and about one-tenth so dramatic. Don't worry; he's happy to talk her up too, if she wants.
