In fact, when he sees Todd coming down the hallway, he takes a sharp turn into the History of Magic classroom to avoid what he thinks would be INEVITABLE TEASING. Calvin doesn't take History of Magic. Mr. Merrill isn't sure why he's here. Calvin is then forced to endure an embarrassing conversation with Mr. Merrill about whether or not he's lost, as well as a bit about the history of kissing day. He's humiliated, but slightly more informed about American traditions. In retrospect, risking possible eye contact with Todd probably would have been the wiser option.
