Cool, Gooseberry, ghosts at the Sorting. Glad to see we're starting off on the right foot.

And yet somehow I'm still super delighted to be back. What's up with that, do you think? Is it because teenagers have difficult comprehending consequences and our own mortality?

Not to harsh anyone's mellow right off the bat, but can we discuss what we're going to do about the inevitable Back To School Grotto Party? Are we still following the whole 'better prefects there than no student authority at all' idea from last year, or...?

Asking because I'm an Azurcrest and we all know Azurcrests and parties and also reckless invitations of death.

Not yet, but I have met my class once or twice, and we are mostly idiots who think we can't die, so like...I have concerns.

If you want to get out in front of it we can have a campsite meeting tonight about it.

Probably a good idea but also, I wanna know how Nia and Ferdy want to handle parties in general first?

And as an extra special note just for you, may I say sorry in advance for any prefecting-related meltdowns I may have at you this year, it's just that I'm going to miss Daddy Cee-Bee a lot. If I do just say something encouraging like 'you can do it' or something, ta much.

Agreed. If it doesn't happen in the Grotto, then it'll just happen somewhere else. Somewhere easier for the teachers to spot everyone getting drunk.

So one way or another, we'll have our hands full.

I don't get why we all have to resign ourselves to schoolwide parties being an unstoppable force.

Oh, Ribbonfin would give up parties. Ebonhide might, too. Azurcrest and Coppertale, though? I don't see it happening.

They wouldn't be happy to give them up, but it's our job to keep everyone safe first, happy second.

Last year we tried to shut down anti-prom. The path to the Grotto was blocked by staff, there was an alternative party to go to, and people had every fucking reason not to want to be in the woods. They still went. It's going to happen.

I was hoping a little for a healthy fear of the grotto, but I'm not sure there is such a thing.

Ideally, there wouldn't be parties. But if there are parties, I'd rather know and be present than not. Unless we were omnipresent and cracked down literally every time there was drinking and more than three people, we just continue to run the risk of people meeting in secret and getting hurt. [...] Same old catch-22 as last year, only this time with more known consequences, I guess.

What does everyone think about this? More than anything I want us to present one voice to the students. Makes for less arguments.

Well you know that and I know that, but I feel like the compelling nature of being able to party with guaranteed safety from adults is going to outweigh partying without ghosts for enough people to make it a question.

Dude. How do we keep them from doing it, though? Like realistically. We block the grotto, they might go into the fucking woods somewhere else and we'd never find them.

Yeah that's my thing here. I don't want people in the Grotto. But I also don't want them elsewhere in the woods, without anyone in authority having any idea where. That's...bringing up some traumatic memories, right?

Hence me asking.

It's one example. There were other secrets parties that we didn't know about until after the fact, like that stunt that Morales pulled. There were probably others. Aiming for something we can't achieve is a waste of time and puts more people at more risk.

We can work on solutions, but no solution will ever be reached as long as we start with "but it will never work."

I don't see the point in fighting an uphill battle like that. Waste of our time and energy. If what happened last year won't keep them from partying, then chances are neither can you.

The new regime could allow campsite parties again.

So come up with one that's even remotely feasible and we'll try it. Until then, we should do what we can actually do.

And if we stop being so lax about parties, maybe we can actually achieve something. Partying is not a right.
