CARNEY PARTY 3; WILD WEST

Saddle up, partner. This New Year’s Eve, we’re heading out west!

The Carney house is decked out in a rustic Wild West theme. The place is covered in hay bales, mason jars, and cacti (even inside). Cameron greets each guest that arrives with a silver pistol that shoots paintballs. For dinner, a house elf catering company appears, cooking barbeque over a pit in the yard. There’s also plenty of alcohol - beer, liquor, wine, you name it.

HOW THIS WORKS

Everyone in the school is invited! As with parties Cameron has held in the past, the rules are simple: have fun, don’t make too much of a mess, and if you break something reparo it. The party starts at 6 PM, and anyone is welcome to stay the night and take the bus back to school from here in the morning.

Characters without costumes can pull an item from the costume chest, but once they pull, they’re obligated to wear it or risk mockery for being a spoilsport. There is also a mechanical bull riding contest out in the yard. The character with the longest ride will win a prize! You may do each of these up to three times, and I’ll keep rnging for them until 11:59 PM on 1/1.

There will be party games including truth, shot, or strip and spin the bottle/seven minutes in heaven.

» FOYER; COSTUME CHEST: Those without costumes are encouraged to pull at least one item from the chest set up in the foyer. Whatever you pull out, you have to wear! The chest is charmed so that you can’t see what you’ve got until you pull it out.

» LIVING ROOM: Have a seat on a hay bale! Or a regular couch.

» BACKYARD: The yard is surrounded by facades that mimic an old western town. There’s a heated pool and a hot tub, but the lows tonight are 21. Beside the pool, there’s a mechanical bull surrounded by padding. If you can go for the longest ride, you’ll win a prize!

» DEN; PARTY GAMES: The den has been set up for party games, including truth, shot, or strip and spin the bottle/seven minutes in heaven.

» BEDROOMS: Anyone is welcome to stay, but it’s up to you to figure out where, because Cameron isn’t organizing it. There are five unlocked bedrooms, plenty of couches and chairs, five full baths, and lots of floor space. Work it out.

» MIDNIGHT: Near midnight, Cameron encourages everyone to stop what they’re doing and come outside, where champagne and sparklers are handed out. The fireworks start about ten minutes til, crescendoing during the countdown, with a big finale at midnight. Grab someone to smooch!

» MORNING AFTER: Who’s hungover and where did you puke? Did you stick around to catch the bus back to school from Olympus?

"I'd have to work my way up to puppies," Casper retorts wryly, "I should probably start small. Maybe with a skink." He would not, under any circumstances, kick a little dog or a skink.

"Well! Speaking of shitty," Ulysses says, gesturing exaggeratedly at the other boys as if to say 'Can you believe this?'

He knows Casper's kidding, of course, which is why he manages to stop himself from telling him to keep his hands (or feet) off of his baby like some kind of histrionic PTA mom. But it's a close call.

Iliya rolls his eyes. Casper is clearly going to wallow in self-pity instead of listening to Cameron, and Ulysses is about two steps away from reciting a numerical list of Rex's best qualities and personal accomplishments. "A girl likes Casper. He was rude. Now he worries she does not like him anymore, because he likes her." He raises his eyebrows at Casper. "Yes?"

There’s a brief flicker of delighted surprise on Nia’s face, smile bright and wide before settling into something crooked and teasing. Her cheeks are flush, already, from drinking, but that’s not stopping her face from warming even more when Addy comes closer. It still doesn’t quite feel real.

“All booked up, actually,” Nia says, slow and pouty – melodramatic – gaze dipping while her head tilts to the side. But, she also hooks her hands around the other girl’s back to keep her from getting away. Her grin returns, mischievous, as she leans in to whisper, “Good thing you reserved that time slot all for yourself, huh?”

ALWAYS perfect words.

Casper bristles, instantly defensive at Iliya's oversimplified assessment of the situation. "No," he returns tersely, "I don't..." He can't quite bring himself to say he doesn't like Gwen, though. He doesn't actually know how he feels. Except that he feels like an asshole after the way that last conversation had gone. And what had he expected his roommates to do about that? Suddenly, this all seems absurdly stupid. In frustration, he pulls off the cowboy hat Cameron had dropped onto his head. "It doesn't matter. She went with someone else and she'll be done with this before long. If she isn't already. I just feel like a prick. I shouldn't have brought it up."

"Uh-huuuuuh," Hazel drawls, reading the look on Micah's face with little difficulty. "I don't know, this party is pretty great. Anything with a mechanical bull is like.. peak party, in my eyes."

She takes a sip of her drink, smiling into the cup. "Aaand nope, I've been being a good girl. All the boys in Anson are pretty lame anyways. There's a guy at the grocery store I flirt with some but he's too nice." Shrugging, the Coppertale offers Micah a drink. "What about you? You been keeping busy? Not breaking hearts, of course."

Hazel lets out a laugh that's nearly a snort. "Probs, you're just too good-looking. Sorry you had murder giraffes dream after you."

Cash could play dumb, but he knows she means romantically. Which is why he thinks he's being at least half truthful when he answers, "Non-existent."

Oh Ruby, you monster.

Cash turns to Spencer. "Congratulations," he says to the other boy, in deliberate misunderstanding.

"Not breaking hearts." Micah makes a 'cross my heart' motion before he accepts Hazel's drink, and takes a sip without hesitation. It could be poisoned, for all he knows. "Thank god we're going back to school soon, hey? There's no nice boys at Gooseberry. Gross. And speaking of not-nice boys..." Micah waggles his eyebrows at her, trying to look as ridiculous as possible. "Calvin got me a Ouija board for Christmas."

She leans out the second story window, paintball gun gripped in her hands. There's a slight breeze, and Dinah holds up a finger to (pretend to) calculate the speed and direction. With an overconfident nod, she seeks out her mark, an unpainted blond in the crowd below.

"Sorry kid," she says, to absolutely no one but herself, "it ain't personal." The clock on the wall says 11:59, seconds away from the new year. As the fireworks finale crescendos, Dinah squeezes the trigger, and the quiet thwump of a paintball flying through the air toward its target is completely covered up by the sounds of celebration.

"Calm down," Cameron says, waving his hand vaguely. "Y'all're being so dramatic." And he should know, he's an expert. "You should apologize to her. You feel bad, right? So that's simple." He kicks his feet lazily in the water. "Then you gotta decide if you like this mystery woman. So what if she went with someone else? It was just one dance, and she wanted to ask you to it first. Ask her on a date!"

The only poison in that drink is a lot of alcohol - sorry, Micah. "Yeaaaaaah, I'm kind of ready to go back. Gotta get back to all my garbage boys." Hazel says this with a laugh, but her tone suggests she's actually ready to return to school.

Micah's mention of the Ouija board shifts her expression for an instant - her brows draw in, her lips turn down the slightest bit - but it's gone quickly, replaced by something a little mischievous. It's only slightly forced. "Yeah? Got big plans for it already?"

The tiny plastic ball spatters across Yancey’s temple. A killing shot.

He teeters, wide-eyed in shock, contents of his red solo cup swirling up and spilling out the side. Free hand clapping over the side of his head, he blurts the most vulgar thing he can think of, in the moment, “Gosh darn-it!”

And then, drawing his hand away from his face to look at the blood – or, no, wait, blood’s not literally blue. And anyway, his would be purple. “What in the world?” He stares at his hand, face contorting into a scowl. “Holloways.”
