I think the boundaries get wobbly a little when you introduce the 'haha, but just as friends!!!' aspect to something that's normally for romantic couples? I've pushed those boundaries a lot and it just complicates everything and makes my anxiety worse.

I'm not saying don't ask her, but if you really just want to go as friends then wait until the last second to ask so she has a chance to find a more-than-friends date first.

But if you hate the thought of her finding a more-than-friends date who's not you, then you should ask her to go with you as more-than-friends.
