GOOSEBERRY MARATHON

After a great deal of aggressive campaigning on the part of Ophelia Noggins, Outdoor Exploration and Outdoor Education have set up a special event after classes today: the (soon to be) Annual Gooseberry Marathon! The sun is shining, and there's a light breeze. Perfect weather, Mr. Thorn insists.



Micah St. Clair, Madison Ives and Natalie Prince are manning booths around campus where they can give water and rest to the marathon participants, which earns them each 10 points for their houses. Gosh, all that running in the sun sure looks like hard work. Good thing they're relaxing under this umbrella.

For the first 15 minutes, a group of freshmen have sat themselves along the trail, like many students are doing. These students, however, are prepared with score cards, and rate the runners on a scale of 1 to 10. Jeffy Key gets perfect 10's across the board (and wolf whistles), while poor Ursula de Luca gets all 1's as the freshmen boo them. Antonia Papadakis eventually chases off the judgemental children.

Lilika Ignacz definitely spots two antlered figures watching from the wooded portion of the route near Azurcrest.

Fern Mufferaw and Hazel Keating are apparently the favorites of Agent Monet and Agent Yaeger respectively (both of whom are still a little bruised up). The two agents seem to be covertly betting against one another, and cheer loudly for their chosen student.

HOW THIS WORKS

• Anyone can participate! Just sign up and line up.


• However, Outdoor Education students are required to participate. Mr. Thorn has given this as an assignment. "All that matters is that you try," he reassures them, but it's clear this is not optional.


• Ophelia Noggins is trying to force Outdoor Exploration students to do it, too, but... she doesn't have the authority to actually force anyone who wants to skip.


• There are stations set up around campus that offer water, shade and healthy snacks if you need to take a break.


• The student with the best time will get a vial of Felix Felicis!


• The student with the worst time passed out on the trail and was found by Brother, who carried them back to the lodge, much to everyone's shock.
  • There will be a rumor tonight (5/18) that a student passed out during the marathon and Brother saved them, although it's not clear who it was. If you're jockeying for Gooseberry's worst athlete, don't have your character participate in those discussions. ;)
• You have until Saturday, May 19, 11:59 PM to participate! Making the window a little shorter than usual for reactions.


• If your runner participates in a scene and contributes at least 3 comments, we'll add or subtract 1-10 (RNG) from their time. You can choose whether you want them to be faster or slower, depending on which prize you have your eye on.

Their strategy: Lilika spends enough time around Ophelia to know this was coming and she 'prepared' by eating a healthy breakfast and properly lacing her running shoes. She's focused because she doesn't want to talk to anyone.
Athleticism: She runs regularly but not religiously. She's fairly athletic - 7

Fern

Their strategy: Fern enjoys this sort of thing. She's going to challenge her friends to a race. She's not above tripping someone.

Their strategy: She's wearing her running shoes, she's got her hair up, she's hydrated as fuck. She already ran this morning, but that just means she's warmed up, so bring it bitches.
Athleticism: I'm doing it I'm giving her a 10 because long distance running is what Rosy is best at. It's in her skills and everything. She also runs every morning and she's a fucking beast.
Anything else?: 97% chance she fucking wrecks herself trying to overtake Sy in the first five minutes and pays for it with a side stitch in the final five.

Jeffy

Their strategy: HI GUYS!!! Jeffy's into it but if he was told this was happening more than two hours before it happened he already lost track of it. Good thing he's been drinking buckets of water for weeks!!!

Their strategy: Slow and steady wins the race. Or maybe it doesn't, but the journey is the most important part. Actually, winning is technically the most important part of a race, but the experience is very valuable.

Basically, Bert is in good shape and she thinks this is fun, but she doesn't care about winning it.

Their strategy: Currently trying to figure out how to sneak out without being seen. She hasn't even tied her shoes.

Their strategy: Lucas decided he wanted to at least try when he'd heard about it. So, good shoes, plenty of water, he's even got his hair headbanded back out of his face.

Dinah Danger

Their strategy: Eh. He's not here to race, he just likes being outside and exerting himself. So. Probably more slow and steady, energy conserving, etc. He's wearing his least cool sneakers because they're the best for this, and that's as strategic as he's being.
Athleticism: 8. He does take regular runs, but he's not as devoted to it as others.

Their strategy: Phin... probably forgot this was happening. He loves running, but being on a fixed track surrounded by other people is not going to do wonders for his attention span. He'll probably complete this in bursts of effort punctuated by long periods of walking next to friends and chatting or getting distracted during breaks.
Athleticism: 8.
Anything else?: He's wearing a neon visor, just to complete the mental image.

Sy

Their strategy: Sy dropped OE the class start of this year, but of course he's here anyway. Pointless shows of athleticism are Sy's jam. He genuinely finds marathons invigorating.

Their strategy: Oh God. Fuck this. Iliya's gotten more in shape since he started attending Gooseberry, but he doesn't enjoy running. Does anyone enjoy running? Only the fear of disappointing Thorn keeps him on the route, but he's going to walk at least half of this.
Athleticism: 6 and I'm being generous.
Anything else?: Oh and he absolutely didn't bring the proper shoes for this. He's still all in dark colours.

Ruby

Their strategy: As a figure skater, she's got quite a bit of stamina packed into her frame, but normally she'd be all about foresty sporty shit but... marathons are dumb. It's a lovely Friday and she'd rather be sunning in Ribbonfin. She's also going to bother the cute girls in the water booths for too long.
Athleticism: Let's say... 8.

Their strategy: Well, he's prepared. Shoes, snacks, stretches. Hero's going to put in some good effort while Mr. Thorn can see him, but somewhere around Moose Trail, he is going to wish for death and debate the merits of just... leaving. Ughhhh that's not an option, is it?

Lachlan

Their strategy: Lachlan's been trying to get into better shape since December but he's still not a serious athlete, so he's going to pace himself and focus on the (hopefully) very achievable goal of not being last and the maybe less achievable goal of keeping up with Yancey. At least he came prepared with the correct attire and good trainers!

Pear

Rosy + Open

There is exactly one thought going through Rosy's head as she runs. Usually, she's thinking about her breathing as she runs in the silence of the morning, alone on the trails before anyone else is up and out (the buddy system doesn't exist for runners, she decided unilaterally). Sometimes she thinks about her to do list, occasionally it's some problem that's been plaguing her in Hermeticism. But this is one that's unique to this situation, to two Stokers competing athletically, and to Sy outrunning her like an asshole that's too goddamn tall.

"I'm gonna fucking bite him," she mutters under her breath. Then she picks up the pace, because she's going to have to catch him if she wants to bite him.
