Avery has completely forgotten this and is surprised to see her name on anything. After a beat she realizes it's prom dates, and asks loudly with a brow raised high, "Who is Chad Winterbottom?"

Chad hears this, and thinks it's a bit. Or that Avery's teasing him. It hasn't actually occurred to him that someone might not know who he is by now. He's never had that particular luxury. "WHO'S AVERY DAVENPORT?" He shoots back, louder.

Hearing her name, Avery turns around and then... looks very far down. "That's me." She replies, staring at whom she is generally assuming to be Chad Winterbottom. "Are you a... junior?" She asks, trying to be polite even though she's pretty sure he's a freshman.

Ari got paired with Casey. This makes bile rise to Jade's throat unnecessarily. She knows, at a logical level, that it was already settled, and that Ari would be going with her to this dance. The fact that someone had put their names next to anyone else's on the list makes her angry, anyhow.

Jade has a small black plastic knife in her pocket. Several, actually. It's not clear where she got them, but she's been dutifully practicing juggling knives after her horoscope had suggested it last week. She's no good at juggling and uses one for something different now.

She shoves her way to the front of the line and neatly stabs the paper through first her pairing, then Ari's. Then she turns around. "Ari." She calls for her, knife still at the ready, which makes it kind of look like she's about to knife her girlfriend, "Go with me, instead."

Ari had only spared the list a long enough glance to see that Jade was paired with Corrigan - she can't say that match-up didn't stoke a little jealousy in her, either. Obviously, there was no way Jade would prefer a girl like Corrigan to Ari. She was loud and pushy and unappreciative. But she's also bold in a way that Ari isn't, and that little thought bothers her as she walks away to get breakfast, unaware that her name is on the list at all.

She's just wondering where Jade could be when she hears her voice from across the cafeteria. She stands up, a faint smile on her face already, but she waits until she's skipped over to where Jade's standing before she responds.

"All right," she says once she's reached her.

It's only when Ari approaches that Jade realizes this is not exactly the spectacle she had planned. It's a little anti-climactic. Just simple, and a little murdery. Not at all what Ari deserved for their first dance actually together. But Jade doesn't back away from it, or from Ari. In fact, she strides towards her like this was all part of the plan and loops her arms around her neck, smiling like she'd won a whole graveyard.

"Really? Well then all right."

Casper

Normally, Casper ignores shit like this. Today, though, he's noticed a number of the younger students looking at him and whispering to each other. In some cases, he'd even heard excited giggling. So, when he sees the list posted in the Lodge, he's almost certain he knows what to expect and approaches it with his jaw clenched tightly in irritation.

The list doesn't disappoint but it's outlandish enough that it does manage to make the Ebonhide gape for a moment. He only knows who Dinah Dixon is through Quidditch and because he's had to take points from her in the past (like just about every other prefect). And he knows she's a sophomore. He pushes a hand back through his hair and grumbles to himself, "For fuck's sake..."

Not that he's got any intention of following through with this. But still.

Balthazar

While Balthazar had been involved with creating the list, he'd never seen the finished version with his name on it and the revelation has him prepared to tense. Especially after Archie's initial insistence that he'd find the right person for him. When he realizes that his name isn't followed by just one other name but two, though, he relaxes considerably and utters a bright laugh. He likes this idea. He likes this idea quite a bit. Partially because Karen and Jonah are both pretty cute. Partially because he already knows he likes Karen and because he's had so much fun spending time with one grumpy older Ribbonfin he's eager to try another. Partially because there's no way anyone involved will take this arrangement seriously. How could they?

He looks pleased with himself as he walks away from the list, considering his options. And whether or not it would be weird to ask Ramon about Jonah. Probably not, right?
