A GRUESOME DISCOVERY

A GRUESOME DISCOVERY
Ms. Vector is tired and unenthusiastic as she pushes the Coppertale students out onto the trails to do some extra community service. “I realize that this will not help our abysmal standing, but you could all benefit from some hard work and discipline,” she informs her 40 terrible children. Last night a gang of freshmen teepeed what they thought was Ebonhide… but was actually the pump house for the water supply just outside the bears’ camp.
The work is mostly tedious… and a little gross. It rained last night, so the toilet paper and silly string clings to the branches. All the Coppertales reluctantly get to work, including Hazel Keating and Fern Mufferaw. The two girls talk as they work, following a long trails of paper into the woods. This area’s usually only visited by Mr. Covington when there’s an issue with plumbing, but they can still see the rest of the students, and the pump house works as a good landmark. They feel fairly safe.
Until Hazel smells something foul, like rotten meat. Fern smells it too. It’s the stench of a dead animal, coming from just over a little ridge. They can’t resist peeking.
It’s a cliche, but at first they think it's a mannequin, maybe from a past Azurcrest prank.
The reality falls into place piece by piece. The hands are too real. The hair clings wetly to its forehead a little too naturally. The skin is slick and bloated from the rain and decay. It's wearing a uniform of familiar dark wool, and there's a badge still pinned neatly to the front of the dead body’s cloak. The dead body. The dead, rotting body of Agent Yaeger. He's scarcely recognizable; only the embroidered "A. Yaeger" gives him away.
The girls can pick up several details. He was wounded, for one. His leg was twisted beyond use, and it looks like he tried to clumsily bandage his stomach, although at this point his intestines are hanging out and animals have gone to work bringing Yaeger back to the earth. His eyes are gone, his mouth gapes open in an expression that's nothing like the lopsided smile they were used to. They can imagine him trying to hold his broken body together, trying to light a fire with his broken wand, trying to scream for help. How long had he been here, just out of view? When did he realize no one was coming to save him?
Ms. Vector reaches Hazel and Fern first, and takes in the body. For a moment, she’s shocked, but stern resolve takes over. “Go back to camp.” She takes each girl by the arm and drags them away. “Everyone, back to camp. Immediately! Unless you want to explain to your families why you were suspended with only a week of school left.”
No one else has a chance to see the body, but the whole school feels the aftermath. The Aurors are swarming the encampment like frantic ants, and Director Grimshaw’s grip on them no longer seems so sure. “It’s those damned moosemen,” he’s heard saying, almost manic. “They’ve been colluding with these things all along. Bet they’re the ones behind all this. They're the ones who have—” He sees Riley Stamper staring and listening. “Get back to your camp, kid. It’s dangerous out here.”
» COPPERTALE CLEANS UP: Before the gruesome discovery, it's just another evening of annoying chores.
» Hazel & Fern: A gruesome and tragic discovery is made. A young man is dead, and no one knew.
» Aftermath: Students are ushered into the auditorium for an unfortunate announcement: one of the Aurors has died. The nature of the incident is still being investigated.

HOW THIS WORKS
- After all scheduled exams this evening, the Coppertales were made to clean up a staff-only area of campus outside of Ebonhide.
- Hazel & Fern discovered the long-dead body of Agent Yaeger. It looks like he was alive for some time, stranded in the woods, before eventually succumbing to his wounds or exposure.
- No one else saw the body.
- Afterwards, there was an emergency assembly where staff informed students that one of the Aurors has died. They don't yet know that exact nature of his death, but local Aurors are on their way to begin an investigation.
- Exams will continue as scheduled tomorrow. Sorry, kids, but you need to graduate!
- There seems to be unrest, even mutiny, in the ranks of the Aurors. It's not hard to make a logical guess that Agent Yaeger has been a mimic since the incident where Agent Monet and the real Yaeger were attacked.

HAZEL & FERN
Though the smell is deeply unpleasant, that doesn't stop her from taking a few more steps closer to inspect whatever it is. "Some kind of dummy or something? God, why does this smell so bad?" Maybe there's something dead under it, she thinks, because it's probably a nice place to hide from the elements.
