Tonight after dinner we have Duelling and Fencing club! I have been looking forward to duelling again for the entire summer hols. Watching Daddy practice his jinxes and cursework without being able to cast any myself back home is most tiresome. Waiting until December until I'm old enough seems like a lifetime away.

It is a most thrilling activity, and even if you are hesitant about fencing or duelling, I highly recommend you join us all just to try it! I'm sure you will come to love it. And Ms. Lilywhite is a brilliant sponsor and duelist, as well.

Man, I wish I could get back into the club. Duelling is FUN AS SHIT, especially when it's like duelling people who aren't complete assholes.

It is a shame, but I understand why professors may need to make severe punishments when trusting us all to duelling.

Oh I learned loads of things! Daddy and I design spells and hexes together when he's not too busy with work! Well, I just help with the theory, he works on the mechanics and casting for me. He's a brilliant duellist as well.

Maybe I learned my lesson! How the hell do they know I haven't??

Shit, that sounds cool as hell. My old man's a politician, so everything he does is fuckin boring. Is your dad like a, I dunno, professional duellist or something?

Adults always think they know more, it is our curse to endure it for now, but all the better to prove them wrong later, perhaps?

Politicians are important too! Though my family has never directly been involved. And oh no, he only duels for fun, he's a [. . .] restorations and acquisitions expert of artefacts and antiques.

It's a pain in the ass. Adults expect me to "prove" I'm not gonna fight anyone, and it's like yeah OK but for HOW LONG? And what if I have a really good reason??

Ha. You always make everything sound so fancy. That's like... a dude who gets old shit and fixes it up? Like for a museum or does he just keep this shit around for fun? I mean, not shit like it's shitty. I mean like stuff.

I've never really had that problem, personally, so I'm afraid I can't help you. But I can't usually start fights because I feel like it. But I do understand.

Oh no, most of it would not be allowed suitable for a museum. He mostly sells them in his and Mummy's shop. Some of the more fatal sensitive items he keeps at home until they can be sold. It's like an antique shop [. . .] of sorts.

You could totally like hex someone's face off tho. But I guess most people don't start shit with you, huh?

Yeah? That's kinda cool. So do you work there at all when you're not at school? Have you ever gotten to like keep something that's really wicked??

Well not off, but I could perhaps remove a nose or Self-control is a vital aspect of duelling, and it would not do to just disfigure people willy-nilly.

Oh I love coming into the shop and watching Mummy and Daddy. Mummy's so knowledgable about things, it makes her a most lethal businesswoman, [. . .] so to speak. And yes, Daddy has a set of Celtic sacrificial ceremonial knives set aside for me when I am old enough, though it is tempting surrounded by so many beautiful, wondrous things. But then there would be nothing to sell!

OK OK fine no disfigurement, I guess that'd get you sued or whatever. But you gotta know some painful as shit hex that doesn't leave marks, right? Like just put them on the fuckin ground rolling and screaming painful.

What, you can't have them now? What does he think you're gonna get up to with some badass knives?

Well I've learned about some curses, but they won't teach us those. I suppose I could, if I ever had to. So much of cursework comes down to intention and will, which often times our human minds are too weak to master competently.

He's overprotective, he says the history of the knives is too dark and too deeply ingrained in the stone for a sixteen-year old to be trusted with. But I think he's just trying to scare me. He means well, I suppose.

It's a shame they don't have a boxing club here, but I can see why that would be a disastrous idea.

Both. I like bare-knuckle boxing the best, though.

Did you know there's this muggle no-maj sport where they go inside a cage and fight their hardest and people watch? It's called Ultimate Fighters Champion or something along those lines and it's brilliant to watch!

SIGN ME UP. Wand dueling will never be as exciting to me as fist-to-fist fighting. There's something that's just so raw about it.

They even allow women to participate! Not that I could of course, I'm far too small, but that's why I do love wand dueling so much, because physical size matters less than spirit.

They had wrestling at my old school. Not bad. Kicked a lot of ass at that. But teachers do kind of disapprove of kids getting punched in the head.

Oh that would probably be a better idea! Not the punches to the cranium, of course, but wrestling!

Why do you love duelling so much?

Don't be silly, helping you with duelling is just as useful for me as it is for you.

Perhaps because it is one of the purest displays of our innate magical abilities. And because even the smallest of individuals can be formidable. I have always been so small in my family but when I duel I feel even taller than Daddy, and as powerful as Mummy. And much of history has been made between two wands. Duellists can become legends.
