AMNESIA BUG

AMNESIA BUG

It's a somewhat dreary morning, with a light, misty rain all across campus. It's business as usual, though, except... some students are acting particularly forgetful today.

HOW THIS WORKS

Full symptoms will have set in by 11:30 AM. You can decide exactly when and how quickly your character is hit with the amnesia bug, i.e. from the time they wake up, or later in the morning.

Your characters have two brief windows in which to do amnesia things around campus: 7 AM-12 PM, before Mufferaw is certain what's happening, and 5:00-5:45 PM when there's a brief breakout.

Teachers are on high alert to make sure that none of the affected students are hurt or otherwise taken advantage of. They'll break up any canoodling that's not between people they know are a couple, and there will be no opportunities to have sex. Please just use this as your blanket OOC safety net: Staff will save your character from doing anything you don't want them to do.

Characters will be allowed to keep their journals while in quarantine.

They'll all be given a cure before bed.

Everyone affected is spending the night in the lodge.

In the morning, they'll wake up with all of their memories intact, including memories of what they did Saturday.

Memory loss is entirely defined by you. You do what works best for your character. It does not need to be consistent across characters.

However, the bug does not create new memories. Your character will not think they're a different person unless some outside influence successfully convinces them. And they'd need to be, like, ridiculously gullible.

Similarly, it does not take away skills, although your character may forget they have them. For instance, they might forget they can speak another language, but they still have the ability. No one will forget how to walk, talk, etc.

» symptoms set in: When the infected wake up, they feel a little off. Forgetful. Small details escape them. Their short and long term memories are spotty. By 11:30 AM it's clear it's yet another plague, and everyone is going to enjoy another classic Gooseberry Quarantine.

» the lodge: quarantine: It's not long before all the infected students are gathered up by staff, and everyone's in quarantine by 12 PM. Because the infection is really more of a mild magical curse, it's easy to tell who's got it and who doesn't with a quick detection spell.

» the lodge: the infirmary: This is where Mufferaw would prefer you all be so he can keep an eye on you, but he can't entertain dozens of energetic teenagers in here.

» the lodge: the atrium: A portion of the atrium has been cordoned off, and the amnesiacs can access the Wii, the TV and the ping-pong table. Their friends can come visit them, but there's always a teacher on guard to make sure no one picks on the forgetful kids.

» breakout: After several hours locked in the lodge, Rafael "Definitely Not a Prefect" Ramirez gets impatient enough to stage a breakout. He waits until Healer Mufferaw takes a break and is replaced by Ms. Whittle, and then sends a freshmen to go ask her what Star Trek is. After that, he leads a number of interested students to the sole balcony they have access to, and reveals there's a rarely used fire escape that leads down to the shore.

If your character escapes: You have about 45 minutes of freedom before the teachers track everyone down again. Because no one's in their right mind, they won't give detention, but oh my god you're all so difficult.

For our sanity and everyone's comfort, if you plan on having anything uniquely bad happen to your character, please privately run it by the mods first. And let's just say everyone's too busy scattering and running to get up to any accidental amnesia cheating, hm?

» the next morning: remembering: Everyone wakes up Sunday morning feeling a little bleary. All of their memories are back, as well as the memories of how they behaved yesterday.

The smile, small as it is, makes Rafael's pulse quicken. Leonardo is handsome, with his sharp features and dark curls. Rafael runs a hand back through his own messy hair, almost self-consciously.

"You do," he agrees. "I think we are close, but I... do not want to assume things."

At his words, Vee's smile droops for the first time all day. She's still not giving much thought to what Ari said, of course, merely figuring this has something to do with her recent overwhelming business. After all, being captain of two squads kind of took a lot of attention away from him. And really everything else in her life. A tiny frown takes up residence on her face, and she reaches for his hand and gives it a gentle squeeze.

"I'm sorry. I know I've been super busy lately, with all the captaining and studying," she begins, entirely apologetic. She even actually looks guilty. "But I promise I'll make it up to you." Her grin returned, a little wicked, before the sweetness returned. Vee couldn't tell what he was thinking, but the fact that he was just looking her over was a little odd. Biting her lip, she tried again. "I promise. Cupcakes will even be involved." Who doesn't love sweets as a tool for pretty much all bribery and erasing of mistakes, right?

Before he even answered, however, Jeremy's hands were on her face gently. At first, Vee thought it was a sign of forgiveness, but the concern in his tone and the way he immediately moved into business mode brought the frown back. "I'm feeling fine," she answered, pouting a little. "Why do you keep asking me that?" The pout is in full force. "I'm fine, better than fine actually. I feel amazing for the first time in what I think is awhile." Vee's own hands came up and covered his with equal gentleness. "I swear. And I'm really sorry for being distracted lately."

The more Vee said, the more Jeremy realised that something was definitely wrong. But the moment Vee starts to get upset, there's a part of Jeremy that feels ridiculous. Why couldn't he just go with this? Forget the need to be fucking good for just a bit and enjoy something that feels uncomplicated and easy for once.

Because she deserves better than this.

The answer, though unwanted, is a firm wake-up call.

He still takes a few moments. He didn't answer immediately or even react at all. Just took the time to take in this happy, smiling Vee and try to commit it to memory. There was little point trying to convince her that something was definitely wrong. And arguing with Vee was the absolute last thing Jeremy wanted right now. So he tried a different tactic.

He took her hand in his instead, trying for a smile and bringing their joined hands down by their side. "Alright, then. You said you were hungry, right? Let's go to the Lodge grab a bite."

Jeremy was going to get Mufferaw to see if he could figure out what was wrong with Vee.

Quinn hides a smile behind her hand by pretending to scratch her cheek. "We, ah, get that... a lot." She looks Jesse up and down to confirm that yes, her bestie is still kicking, even if he's dripping with wide-eyed innocence. It's unnerving not to be recognized. At first, she'd reasoned that maybe it would be better not to try and inundate the ill with details of their real lives in case they became overwhelmed, but so many people had been trying to convince their friends of the truth that it had become a lost cause. Oh well. If Jesse's brain was going to be fucked, she wasn't going to make it any worse.

"We've been known to swap places from time to time." The edge of her mouth turns up into a small, mischievous smile despite the Responsible Daycare Worker persona she's tried to display, and it's obvious that she's proud of what she says next, "I had your Great Aunt Hazel going for an entire dinner and she still doesn't know."

After heading to what she's since learned is the Quidditch pitch, mostly because she has a reminder on her mirror about being at the pitch on time, what she sees there is enough to scare Ana senseless. Flying. Metal balls being hurled at people. People miles in the air while this is taking place. Ana's wide eyes never left the sky, taking particular care to study the strange (and vaguely torture-esque) rings positioned on either end of the fields, until she finally decided she was out. So much out. The person who urged her to get on a broom was clearly trying to end her life.

Maybe he was in league with Brother.

Jeffy's comments on her entry are not in any way reassuring, but she knows Jeffy. He's nice. He's fun. He is a good dancer. And while the other girl was also nice, Ana doesn't really know who she is in any real way outside a name, and plus she was at the practice. Jeffy is clearly the safer choice. Without really knowing why, she places Titania into the pocket of her hoodie that she modified to have velcro edges so the kitten can poke her head out while they walk and heads to meet him. She's half afraid people on brooms are going to ambush her, mostly because he seems really into quidditch, but largely she's just glad to not be fixating on how crazy every is at the moment.

Okay, so Jeffy kind of had an idea of what was going on, hearing the bits and pieces from everyone trying to herd their confused friends toward the infirmary. He still wasn't sure what was wrong with people, but the general idea was "if they seem confused, get them to the infirmary!" And Jeffy was nothing if not a perfectly good kid.

"Aaaaana!" he calls out when he sees her, jogging to catch her before she wandered off. Was that a possibility?? He wasn't sure. Some people seemed to be acting like stray cats. "Wait up for me!"

This earns a soft laugh and a faint but still pleasantly visible blush from Cecil; he's heard Levi say things like that a hundred times, but...it's still sweet. And still embarrassing. Especially after the other boy has been staring at him for several inexplicable moments. He shifts the small box he's holding into one hand and accepts the offer of help with the other, allowing Levi to pull him up and onto his feet. Where he, unfortunately, stands six feet and four inches tall; one inch taller than the other boy. Not that he's aware that they're back to measuring height.

He thanks his boyfriend warmly for helping him up, then tips open the lid of the box and holds it out to him with a smile. "I spent this morning in the Magical Rudiments classroom. If you want a reward for all your hard work...and for being a gentleman?"

Something about the way he moves is endearing. Graceful. Leo is drawn closer, because he doesn't want to miss a clue, if one shows up. He nods, eager for the confirmation. It's somehow a relief. "You're right, I think. I don't remember for sure. I'm sorry. I know my name's Leonardo." It's maybe the one thing he can confirm, for sure. But he wants this boy to know it too.

Waking up in the morning is a lot like waking up the morning after getting really shit faced. Memories rush in of embarrassing things you did the night before that you never would've done sober. Like hitting - very persistently - on Casey Patterson. That realization alone kills all motivation to even get up. He almost fucking hooked up with Casey Patterson, he tried to hook up with Levi, he told Rosy they should Christian her fucking cabin together. He's pretty sure he got in a fight with Quinn maybe? He's pretty sure Casey punched him in the face too? Was that before or after he tried to get Casey naked?

Chris groans out loud and rolls over and just does not move.

Until he remembers that he chucked a squirrel off of him yesterday too - that has him sitting straight up. "Fuck. Did I kill Ty?"

Watching him carefully, the fact that there was no reaction on his face only made Vee's worry deepen. Had she messed things up worse than she'd thought? Was there really no way that he wasn't going to forgive her? The hurt and worry, and yeah a little bit of fear, showed clearly in her eyes as she looked at him. The silence was so tense, Vee started to bite her lip nervously, then decided she should try and appeal to him again. Things with Jeremy had always been easy, always been natural and fun and just good. Even when they fought and pretended like they could stay away from each other. She could fix this.

Before she could open her mouth, though, Jeremy moved their hands and smiled a little. It wasn't his usual smile, she saw it now, but it was something. Obvious relief moved over her face as she looked up at him. "I am starving," she confirmed with a nod. "Although I was kind of hoping to stay here? A little time together would be nice, right?"

Amnesia Cameron would just like a pal to play chess with. Who wants to talk about the finer points of Shakespeare?

ULYSSES AGGRESSIVELY POINTS TO HIMSELF he's gonna remember the fuck out of this in the morning

Cameron should probably be bothered, but in truth, this is all sort of fascinating. It's a mystery to be investigated! The healer has assured everyone, in his gruff way, that he'll get them sorted out, and even though Cameron can't remember him, he gets the sense that if he says it, he can do it. That had alleviated any niggling worry that they might all be stuck with permanent memory gaps.

Still, he's trapped in quarantine, and if he has any homework that needs doing, he certainly can't remember it. After sniffing around the atrium for a while, he eventually comes across a beat up chess set. He sets it up on a table, hoping someone will join him.

WELP

Hearing Jeffy's voice, she waves goodbye to Roxie, still confused as to why the older girl is suddenly so concerned about her. Did she miss something? Todd said she was a quidditch player but just remembering that practice situation makes her shiver. Nope. He must be thinking of another Ana.

Pausing so Jeffy can catch up, she gives him a half smile. "Today is the weirdest day," she mutters, stroking Titania's head as she pops her face out to look at Jeffy.

PUMPS FIST

Jeremy wasn't going to take advantage of Vee in this state. But he also wasn't going to let go of her hands because fuck that. He wasn't going to deny himself that, at least.

He raised a hand to tuck a stray strand of hair that had fallen across her face back. "We'll do that after we get your stomach problem sorted, babe. Besides, we'd still be together. Just in the cafeteria." And possibly Mufferaw's. But he was bolstering his smile, attempting to sell this to her. "C'mon," he tugged at her hand, leading her towards the path to the Lodge.

Fortunately for Quinn, Jesse isn't easily overwhelmed. The idea that he might one day leap through time, alongside space, has been a possibility for him for a long time now. He's barely even flustered by the fact that he's somehow now an eighteen year old in rural Utah, when the last thing he remembers is being a fourteen year old in Allegheny, New York. What does confuse him is the possibility that his time loss is ... curable? And that other people seem to be suffering from it, like some sort of disease.

He supposes that's good news, though. He'd like his memories back, if at all possible. He's curious about the older girl—no, they're likely the same age—smirking at him. She's very pretty, despite her ... unique style. And she knows his family.

Cautiously, he steps out onto the deck and closes the cabin door behind him. He's quiet for a moment, before letting out a thoughtful hum. "Are you my girlfriend?" he asks, bluntly. He can't imagine what other reason a girl, who clearly cares about him, would have for spending time with his family, especially his loopy Great Aunt Hazel.

Okay so. As far as quarantines and plagues go, Vee wants to put in a vote for that being the absolute worst one. Not only does she wake up feeling like she got hit by a bus, like the worst kind of actual hangover, but she also is filled with the sudden horrific realization that she tried to kiss Jeremy yesterday. And generally made an absolute fool of herself.

Maybe she can just stay in quarantine indefinitely.

Cameron won't have to wait long. Ulysses, freed of any insecurities about his perceived maturity, has been happily sticking lock-step close to the people he sees as friends — first his cabinmates, then Clementine, then his sister. He'd spent some time alone in the infirmary, but soon, boredom had set in, and Ulysses — never overly abstemious on a good day, let alone one where he has no reason to ignore his whims — had hopped up to go explore.

Which is what brought him to the atrium. And ~~CCC~~ Cameron's chess set. His eyes light up. "You want to play?"

Levi finds himself standing up as straight as he can, shoulders back, chin up, but he's immediately distracted by the box and returns to his usual posture as he eyeballs the pastries inside. He gets first dibs? He gets first dibs.

Cecil is totally giving him special treatment. Cecil totally has a BIG FAT CRUSH on him. And if this is Cecil from the Future, his baking's gotta be wayyyy better than Cecil from the Present. But...

"My hands are gross, I don't want to touch it or I'll get them gross too," he states softly after a moment of pause, looking genuinely discouraged by this. He has his Quidditch leathers on and his hands are encased in gloves; he knows they're sweaty and dirty beneath. "Can I, like, get one on a napkin and hide it in my desk before the others get to it? 'Cause I totally want one, they look perfect."
