[Cecil & Jessee]

Hey guys,

Sorry that I wasn't around for the Great Journal Debate of 2013; I was at work in the library until the very end. I went through the comments last night and it looks like we're headed for some decisions, and if not decisions, then at least discussions. I'm giving you both my ten cents here since I can't seem to track Jesse down.

Cecil, I know you're in a difficult place. And I know that if you try to handle the Azurcrest side of this whole shitshow situation yourself, the other prefects might eat you alive. I'm not saying they WILL, but if you want our support, I'm behind you no matter what (unless I think you're wrong, but I'll tell you if that's the case.)

Ravi is completely right about the House-sanctioned parties. If they're approved by the staff, we should respect both the staff's wishes, and the rights of all students to a safe space. Their age shouldn't factor in to it, though — there are definitely juniors and seniors who abstain from drug use (alcohol included) and we shouldn't belittle their values by saying that this decision is "to protect the kids."

All of that being said, banning drugs from house parties may make us unpopular for a while and we should be prepared for that. I'm happy to keep turning a blind eye from the Grotto parties as long as the 'conflicts and injuries' tally doesn't get too high. (And let's be honest, will we ever stop Grotto parties? No. Do I want to stop them? Not particularly.)

If we don't ban drinking and smoking from Azurcrest parties, we need to figure out some kind of viable alternative to include the students who might feel excluded, but without having them think we've made them sit at the kids' table.

That was more like a toonie than a dime, but I needed to get it all out.

[/ward]

I would like to lodge a formal complaint that I'll have Herbology first thing in the morning after Hallowe'en. Maybe I should dress as a giant plant and sleep in the greenhouses so that I'm actually awake for classes. Are there any good giant plant costumes that I could still dance in? The only idea I have is Audrey II from The Little Shop of Horrors, but I'd never be able to move in that.

There's always a cactus. Or if you stick the word "sexy" in front you could probably just wear a miniskirt and a leaf in your hair and be whatever you want to be.

A mandrake? Then if you need to yell at anyone, you won't be breaking character.

Mandrakes are typically not popular, no.

How about this instead: The senior prefects were joking about going as greek gods. You could be Demeter or Persephone, depending on how threatening you want to look, and add some vines and plants to your costume.

A willow tree. Maybe like that talking one in Pocahontas.

Thank you for your input and your support, Quinn. I've been discussing the matter with Maggie already and I agree with her, with Ravi, and with you.

It goes without saying (though I definitely will be saying it when I talk to everyone) that the rules the other Houses choose for themselves need to be respected. Azurcrests have no right to show up to a Ribbonfin party with drugs and alcohol that never should have been there. That isn't our camp and that isn't our choice.

That said, Azurcrest has a tradition of leniency toward all of that which I've done nothing to change. I can't speak for either of you, but I'd become so accustomed to that over the last few years that change didn't seem like a possibility. But I remember how uncomfortable it was as a freshman being brought into this environment and how hard it was to adapt to it and I don't think that's something we should be forcing any of the students through. I got used to it (even if I still don't participate), but I don't know that that's a good thing and that shouldn't be a requirement to be part of this House. Azurcrest isn't about that. If you both agree, I'd like to place the same restrictions on our camp as on the others. That means no alcohol and no drugs being used on camp grounds, only the Grotto, and no distributing such substances to others students or bringing them to other camps. If you don't agree, let me know and we can discuss our options.

This will be an unpopular decision at first, but it's one that I should have made a month ago and not something that you or Jesse need to feel the repercussions of. As long as you're willing to help me enforce this (or whatever variant we decide on), I'll be grateful.

You could just go as a flower! Wear all green for the stem and a bonnet with big flower petals all around the edge. You'd be able to dance, although the petals might limit your peripheral vision.
