WARDED TO PREFECTS/HB/HG
Hey guys. A couple people were left in the Grotto after the party last night and I just wanted to air out my concerns about our current system for handling parties.

Vee ended up in the Grotto after the party was over, and Jeremy left his campsite to go look for her. Obviously it's better than not to make sure drunk people aren't alone in the woods, but a non-prefect from a different house probably shouldn't be going it alone to get back to the Grotto.

[...] And Jaime ended up sleeping out there. He didn't come back until this morning.

Obviously it's my fault that Jaime wasn't in the cabin, and I'll take full responsibility for that. But we might need a more robust system for making sure everyone gets back safe, or maybe to just stop having "off-duty" prefects altogether.

Obviously people aren't taking the buddy system into account, and things get jumbled at the end of a party as we try to herd drunks back to their beds. We could have sign in sheets, check-ins, no off-duty prefects, but we could also revisit the most robust and unpopular idea of no more sanctioned parties.

It's never been smart, really, and I wouldn't have a problem with saying 'no more unsanctioned parties' if I thought it was enforceable. Unfortunately, it isn't difficult for parties to be planned without our knowledge. We might realize what's happening when the cabins are empty, but by then it's too late to put a stop to things. Even if we were to station prefects at the Grotto, which I'm not sure I'm comfortable doing, the parties could just go somewhere else.

But I'd be happy to be wrong. Do you all think this is feasible?

I think we started out with the idea that it would be unenforceable and worked backwards from there. If we start out thinking that there is a way to make this work, we might surprise ourselves.

Though that also might just be my biannual attempt at being optimistic.

I like Rosy the Optimist. [...] But you may be right. We should try think about this from another angle and see what we can come up with.

You're not wrong. I know we all get a little stir crazy here at boarding school, but going crazy at the Grotto just because we can and because we know the staff won't stop us is probably not the only option. We just thought it would be the easiest one to manage. Maybe we could brainstorm other ideas to let loose that don't involve 160 people getting drunk in the middle of the woods.

Did anyone talk to Jeremy about not playing hero running off without a buddy in the middle of the night?

Instead of 'talk,' how about 'remove points?' If Jeremy's friend is lying in the Grotto I can't imagine that Ravi would scold him when woken up for someone to walk with. They're rules for a reason and those who break them should be dealt with accordingly.

I like the idea of mandatory check-ins. By a sober prefect, once we're all at the cabins.

[...]

You're right. Last night was a mess and we all need to do better. What happened wouldn't have been possible if several of us hadn't dropped the ball, me included. I should've confirmed the head count with you last night, Reece, and I'm sorry I didn't. That's my responsibility.

Right now, I think our best options are to enforce the buddy system more strictly than we have been and to do away with the "off-duty" prefects. For the time being, at least. With what's been going on, I I think we can all agree that the safety of our classmates needs to be our top priority.

What?

Someone got left behind, then someone else snuck back out to find them?? And someone slept out there, so two people technically got left behind? Who the fuck was on duty any Who cocked this up so bad??

I think you're definitely right. We should reconsider our options in regards to everyone's safety.

For fuck's sake.

[...]

No more "off-duty" prefects makes sense. If all the prefects stay sober, that means we've all just got four people to wrangle. Plus a few freshmen. That's manageable.

I'm throwing in a vote for no more off-duty prefects and end-of-night check ins.

Vee's being left behind is on me. It won't happen again.

i'm not really allowed to drink. not in like a religious sense or anything. just. medicationally? so i don't really mind always being on-duty. whatever way this decision thing goes.

but, um. either way. totally okay with it.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around how two people evaded the sweep when we have minimum eight sober prefects performing their duties at the end of the night.

Do we need another buddy system PSA? I could pull out all the stops, break out the glitter charms.
