LAUGHING DRAUGHT DISASTER

Seniors in Potions are working on laugh-inducing draughts. Takeru Maeda gets a little overzealous in their potion making, and the fumes hit everyone in the class (including Mr. Elmasry) very hard. Senior Potions students spend the rest of the day finding everything absolutely hilarious, and are impossible to talk sense to until well past dinner.

Senior potions is at 3PM, effects last until "well after dinner." That's plenty of time to wish for the icy hand of the Grim Reaper to take you and/or your classmates.

Consider the following: if someone said "Know what happens to a toad that gets hit by lightning? Same thing that happens to everything else," to one of these poor sods, they'd have to laugh at that. And then live with that fact for the rest of their lives.

Rafael's surprised when Leo goes to cover his mouth. He'd been engrossed in Leo's work, reading aloud increasingly exacting instructions for Leo to show off by executing perfectly.

There's smoke and a commotion, but before Rafael has totally realized what's going on, he's beginning to snicker at Leo's attempts to protect him. It was sweet, but the sight of Leo covering both of their mouths is too much. Rafael coughs, which turns into laughter as he helplessly grabs Leo's hand.

"No, no, maybe... maybe not?"

This situation has all kinds of bad portents all over it. People are erupting in laughter, and nothing is objectively funny. Except...yes it is. Leo grabs Rafael's hand and squeezes it hard to anchor himself, after sparing exactly one glance around the room.

"This could be bad. I mean. This seems pretty ser...pretty serious."

This is the funniest joke Leo has ever told, he thinks. At least, that's how it seems when he melts into laughter, forehead leaning into Rafael's shoulder to hide it at least a little.

Rafael might be alarmed by how funny he found that if he weren't so busy crumbling into uncontrollable laughter. He leans back into Leo, and rides out the fit of giggles, forcing himself to breathe slowly. In, out. In, out. Slowly he calms himself. This will be fine. Everyone else is still hysterical, but when Rafael sits up, his face is even.

"Ah, just some fumes," he says, still calm. Every word he speaks makes it harder, but he can do this. He can do this. (He cannot actually do this.)

Rafael's moment of clarity allows Leo to breathe, too. He clears his throat, narrowly avoiding another collapse into giggles, and forces himself to frown in concern for this situation.

"Maybe we should open a window."

It's a useless suggestion, as Leo makes no attempt to go to a window. In fact, he refuses to move his head from Rafael's shoulder. It's safer. Leo instead gazes resolutely at a crumpled ball of paper someone let fall to the floor near a corner trashcan. He allows exactly one chuckle to escape, as it's a really weirdly shaped thing, but he has to keep it together. Leo's face is slowly flushing from the effort of holding all of this in, but he does. They can get through this. Laughing draught doesn't have to make everyone idiots.
