SLEEP UNDER THE STARS

Ms. Whittle and Mr. Thorn are waiting outside of Coppertale for students to show up for the outdoor sleepover. Everyone checks in with both their prefects as well as staff, and if Ms. Whittle's a bit lax, Mr. Thorn is definitely not.

The sky is clear, and with each passing minute the stars get more and more impressive. Almost hypnotizing. It's a warm, pleasant night, perfect for camping, and most students feel perfectly at ease sleeping outside. At least it's not in the forest, right?

RULES

• Everyone will check in at 10:00 PM in the flower fields outside of Coppertale. They must also check in with their prefect. If you fail to check in with both in a gambit to sneak off somewhere else, you'll be in trouble.


• There will be May and June constellations visible. Astronomy students can point them out with ease.


• There will be hot chocolate or lemonade available, and some light snacks, but everyone is assumed to have eaten dinner earlier.


• You may sleep near anyone you like. There are also tents available if you don't want to be exposed to the elements, in which case those sleep up to four.


• Ms. Whittle has convinced Mr. Thorn to not stop young couples who are clearly just here to make out under the stars. Don't get frisky, though!


• Attendance is optional, but Astronomy students can earn extra credit for attending.


• Everyone will be woken up early at 9:30 at the latest, and breakfast will be served in the lodge.

» STARGAZING: Before going to sleep enjoy the beautiful stars and look for some constellations. Alternatively, tell a cutie that the brightest stars are the ones you see in their eyes. ♥

» GOODNIGHT: Quiet time is at 12:00 AM, so settle down in your sleeping bag or grab a tent. You may sleep near whoever you wish, but tents only sleep four at a time.

It's Ya Boi Nia (Open)

After check ins, Nia finds a place to plop down. She reclines, legs drawn up, palms flat against the grass, and stares up at the night sky. After a minute or two of watching stars, she gets the vertigo-like feeling of smallness that comes with thinking about how massive the universe is.

When her gaze falls away, she finds a firefly crawling across her knee. She ushers the bug onto her hand and brings it up to her face for a closer look, humming a melody to herself. Or it.

Robin Stares @ Stars (Open)

Robin loves the fuck out of some stoned stargazing. Like, even without his laser pointer for taking down planes or powering up UFOs, he'll just zone out, staring at the sky, and, like, think about all the aliens and experimental aircraft and fake moons and shit up there.

Oh, and Star Trek.  And Wars. And Battle Galactica. All the different sci-fi Star franchises.

Sprawled out in the grass, Robin watches a so-called satellite blink through the sky and tries to take a sip from his hot chocolate. But he's lying down. So it doesn't work so well.

"Motherfuck," he grumbles as it splashes down his shirt.

Somehow, he's blaming aliens for this shit.

Xavier & Reid Are Hooligans

Climbing's not the hard part. No, Xavier even manages to make it look deceptively easy - which is saying something because he sometimes makes regular walking look like a talent with a high skill floor. Still, he's not graceful by any stretch of the imagination. Just strong. After glancing at the distance between the railing and the eave of the Coppertale junior boy's cabin, he makes the leap, catches the edge of the roof and then hefts himself up and over like he's weightless.

"We'll be nearby. Just gonna go hang out at Reid's cabin." He'd told Ravi and Sun-mi when he'd checked in. It wasn't technically a lie.

Xavier claps the dirt off his hands and, staying crouched low, peers over the side. Watching Reid climb is almost as good as watching him fly.

Riley Mae (Open)

Riley doesn't mind sleeping outside nearly as much as you would expect. Her dad used to take as many of them as he could wrangle camping in the summers, and there were a hell of a lot less mosquitos here than there are in Alaska. It's kind of nice, curled up in a big blanket in her cutest damn pajamas, cuddling with anyone who will have her. She's not here for stargazing, she's here for outside snuggling.

Her faded blue hair is crammed under a big dumb hat, her hot chocolate is almost done with and her snacks are just crumbs, and though it's getting later in the evening her energy levels are just starting to amp up. The Riley Mae is a nocturnal creature. And will not be happy about having to be up before 10:00 tomorrow. Ugh.

Ravi & Diego

Ravi always justified taking Astronomy as it being the only practical science course at Gooseberry, as some flimsy proof to his No-Maj parents that he actually was getting a well-rounded education at magic school. But if he's honest with himself, it was always for the romance of it. Late at night, looking at the sky, surrounded by darkness and quiet. Ravi's always been less interested in the science behind stars than in the stories people have attached to the patterns they mapped out in an attempt to make sense of the universe.

He's rambling along these lines to Diego as they lay out their blanket. (There are sleeping bags for later, but the true spirit of stargazing should really require a blanket and nothing else, Ravi opined.) "Of course, what always fascinates me are the star myths from outside of Greco-Roman mythology," Ravi continues, and points up at the sky. "In India, they have a story for the stars in the Big Dipper too. The seven stars are seven sage who were married to... oh, actually—" He looks down at his star map. "I suppose you can't see the Pleiades right now."

FERDIE AND THE RIBBONCORNER (But it's open!)

Ferdie is slightly less than jazzed about this whole experience. Stars are pretty, but nature isn't really something he came to this school for. He's from a city. Bugs aren't great. But it's the kind of quiet fun activity he thinks he should be promoting, as a Ribbonfin Leader. So he's trying to not make it too obvious that he's definitely booking it to a tent tonight, and that he isn't letting any of his body parts or hot chocolate touch the green outdoors.

When he stops fretting over those things and actually looks up, though, it's worth it. It's cool out here.

Solo and Sam

Solomon had no actual desire to go outside at night, if he were being honest with himself. The sun lasted for so long now that he might never have another need to go outside without the sun for the next four months. But Sam had asked him to go, so instead of being locked inside of his cabin without bash, researching things, he decided to go look at stars with a girl he really liked.

It felt like a really solid decision, right up until they were sitting on the ground, in the open darkness, surrounded by invisible shadows. Then it didn't feel like a solid plan anymore. Sam hadn't been involved in their seance. She didn't know. She had nothing to fear. That was nice. He was grateful for it. "Stars are nice," he says, just to say something. It's vague and stupid and probably obvious, because he's not looking at the stars, he's looking toward the trees.

Dimi & Sylla

Dimi hasn't taken Astronomy in months, and he still doesn't much care for camping, but the warm night and clear sky are far too lovely to stay inside. Especially when the opportunity has been afforded to fraternize, in however limited a capacity. After scooping up two lemonades, he makes his way across the open field, trying to recall as much about Astronomy as he can to impress a girl who could probably talk circles around him about the subject.

When he finds Sylla, he offers her a smile and a drink. "Alright?"

Leo never took Astronomy. It wasn't something that was offered in the Queens school. He'd never seen any need for it, if he was going to become an Auror. He was annoyingly practical, sometimes.

Today, though, he kind of sees the appeal. Maybe wishes he had. There's patterns in the stars and he can't name any of them. It'd be nice to be able to. But it doesn't matter much. He's enjoying lying with his head on Rafael's shoulder, looking into the sky like it holds a code only he can solve. When he speaks, it's hushed. There's enough people around, and he doesn't necessarily want everyone to hear details of his home.

"You know? I never saw this many stars before school. There's too many cities around. They're how I realized how in the middle of nowhere I was, here."

Hazel & Open

Hazel had pretty heavily considered staying back in her cabin tonight, avoiding the great outdoors, avoiding the night, avoiding the things that go bump in said night... but that just felt like quitting, and she wasn't about to quit. Plus, there would be so many people around. What could really go wrong? So, ghosts be damned - she was going to go out and not be scared and have fun.

Except, despite her best efforts, she's not having as much fun as she'd like to. She's lying on her back, hair spread in the grass, outwardly looking decently relaxed but... really she's trying not to connect the stars into a spinal cord. Ugh.

Aiden and OPEN

Having steered clear of the seance entirely, Aiden is blissfully unaware of the dangers and scariness that lying around out in the open poses for the rest of his classmates. Instead, he is here, lying on a mat outside in the open, staring up into the sky, happily identifying as many constellations as he can.

It is an activity that doesn't rely on human interaction and the beautiful star-filled sky definitely deserves adoration that Aiden is more than happy to provide.

Oscar + Vee

Things had been going great for Oz. He seemed to finally gain some traction in his Quidditch practices, starting to do a lot better than he had been doing. It's like whatever had been blocking him this year had started to lift. Maybe his insecurities were easing. Maybe his luck was changing. Despite the unfortunate circumstances with Bianca and the poorly timed kiss with Vee, things were... getting better. He had been trying to act cool around Vee ever since, but he wasn't sure where they stood.

So, when he saw her lying under the stars alone tonight he just had to go and join her. They were best friends above all else, right? She was his best girl friend, and he was... well, he didn't know. Everyone loved Vee. She was special. Beautiful, kind-hearted, fun. She always made Oz feel good about himself, forget about the things that bothered him. It was nice.

Making his way over, Oz dragged his sleeping bag to be next to hers and plopped down beside her. "Hey, Vee. Enjoying the stargazing?" He asked, sliding into his make-shift bed, lying on his side propped up by his hand and elbow. A smile slid easily onto his face as he looked at her.

Something in the night causes Ennis to stir and when he opens his eyes, he gasps at the sight of the antlered figure standing among his sleeping classmates. When he blinks, it's gone. "Please don't, please..." he quietly pleads as he fumbles for his glasses, clumsily putting them on before sitting up and looking around wildly. Nothing. Whatever was there (Anon? Brother?) was gone. Or at least vanished from view.

His clammy hand rests on Cole's shoulder, as if that will keep the other boy from being taken, and he continues peering searchingly around the field and toward the distant treeline for any trace of the entity. "Please just... Let them be?"

Ok I gotta get some damn work done today so bbl but know that Robin and Riley will be here (Robin loves him some stoned stargazing, Riley desperately needs the extra credit). Jeffy is having a lovely night in with the azurbabies with no headless ghosts or flying ouija board planchettes.

The other three could be pushed one way or the other but also Rosy is not a fan of sleeping outside, sticks and bugs might get in her hair.

i too am "working" like a goddamn fool but unlike the rest of yall its like 530pm for me so i should be around in a few hours. idk, i don't have any plans, but everyone was sharing their schedules, so this seemed like the thing to do.

zach is extreme flavour blasted with anti-camping today. mercy (astronomy!!!) and ulysses (... fuckin sue him he lives for this shit) will for def be stargazing. those are my only children with strong opinions.
