So, Avery and Chris do have some complaints about Cricket's behavior. I told them I'd talk to you about maybe revisiting guidelines for prefect behavior on the journals with everyone before the term is up. I know everyone's stressed with finals coming up, but I'd like to get it sorted out before the summer so we've got it all sorted out before the Class of '17 prefects are chosen.

Also, I'm kind of just worried about Cricket on a personal level. Have you talked to her recently?

All right. I've just been worried about her because it seems like she's spreading herself a little thin, but you know how she is when you try to worry about her.

[...] Yeah. I know. Not that most folks try anything of the sort. I swear, everyone's so used to Cricket worrying about them that sometimes, I think they forget she's a person at all. Like she's a walking, talking smiling machine. It's stupid.

I know. She's not obligated to act happy if she's not, that's not what I'm saying. But snapping at people and calling them names really isn't like her. That's what had me concerned.

What names did she call them, anyway? You've gotta know Riley Mae was just stirring the pot with all that stuff about Casey. My sister spends more time looking out for him than just about anyone. And Chris? Saying he was infantile or whatever? Hell, he can't go two days without calling me a baby. Don't even remember the last time he called me Ulysses, no matter how many times I've said I hate his dumb nickname.

Maybe she's just tired of being sugar-sweet all the time when it never, ever pays off. I sure would be. [...] But that's my issue, not hers.

No, it's not that. I've just been wondering why these kinds of arguments seem to happen every other week and I'm starting to think it might be because we're all really bad at listening to each other.

I don't know. I think maybe this whole kerfuffle has had enough side-conversations for tonight.

Stole my sister's pen already. Maybe I should lose my own while I'm at it. It's just he ~~she tries so h~~ ~~he was such a jerk, and there wasn't even any reason for it. And now she's cr~~ not fair.

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to pack it in for the night too. If Cricket's not reading her journals anymore I left her a note about maybe getting together to play board games or something tomorrow, so if you could pass that on I'd appreciate it.

I'm doing a reasonable impression of a responsible young adult who studies for exams and wouldn't rather take a nap on the roof.

Apparently nobody's been telling us when prefects behave inappropriately towards them because they think we're all just going to cover for each other.

You only have to fool your teachers, right?

But there's 26 of you, if you include Cecil and Maggie. They should be able to think of someone they trust enough to talk to. Though I wouldn't discount everyone being a bit wound up from pre-exam nerves. And just being ready for the year to be over.

A good performer fools everyone. An excellent performer fools themselves and then they don't worry about failing.

I know and [...] they're not wrong. Chris provoked her and Avery escalated the situation, but Cricket should have known better than to let it get that far. I'd like to talk to her about it. Another prefect's conduct was brought to my attention as well and I think we all need to do better in the time that's left. So I think taking the time to go over what's expected and to discuss what prefect conduct should be would be time well spent. Even if we're all busy. I'd like you all to start in a better place next year than we did this year.

No. I haven't talked with her much lately. We've both been so busy with senior projects and preparing for exams and everything. But [...] this is a stressful time of year for everyone and with everything else that's been going on lately she probably isn't having an easy time. Maybe there's something we can do to make things a little better for her.

And thank you again, Reece. For stepping in. I know it's hard to make a difference when the situation is already so far gone, but it's important to say something and I think you helped.

I hope so too. And it's not an excuse but that doesn't mean we can't worry about our friend.

Yeah. This year has been difficult on everyone and that has to have had an impact. Hopefully, we can get through the next two weeks without any more incidents and next year [...] things will go back to normal.

After we talk to the other prefects about appropriate behavior I think we might need to have some kind of conflict resolution seminar for everyone.

It may be too late in the year to arrange anything like that before the summer, but finding a way to help people communicate more effectively and either avoid or resolve these situations would probably be helpful. I can talk to the staff and see if they can recommend any resources as a starting point. Otherwise, we'll see what we can put together.

But I think it's a good idea.
