[Inside the box, Calvin finds five hand-painted silk scarves tucked neatly into tissue paper. The first (above) depicts a rendition of the night sky and is the most straightforward of the set. The others are more abstract, featuring the colors of the different Gooseberry houses along with other shades and the suggestions of patterns. The Ribbonfin scarf is green with tints of shiny copper and blue and is reminiscent of water. It's somehow relaxing to look at. The Azurcrest scarf is several shades of blue accented with white twists that seem to drift imperceptibly like lazy clouds. The Ebonhide scarf is the dim color of twilight and the silhouettes of trees appear at the bottom edges of each end when the atmosphere around the wearer gets darker. The Coppertale scarf is a bright red-orange and suggests the shapes of wildflowers. It has a faint, sweetly floral scent that never seems to fade.]

i know things have been difficult for us lately too and i haven't always known how to handle it. but i'll always be your friend and i know leonora won't mind delivering letters next year if they're for you. i made these using the paintbrushes you gave me, the ones from your dad, so they didn't turn out quite like i planned. but i think that makes them more interesting. i hope you think so too.i know it gets cold over there, so i thought

For the last two years Calvin has carefully locked up all his valuable possessions, eternally on guard. Some of his drawers even have magical traps set on them. For the first time since arriving at Gooseberry, he doesn't bother. He leaves them displayed out in the open, carefully laid out on his desk.
