WEEKEND CAMPING TRIP
DAY TWO

The sun rises on the campers, and there's a chill in the air that's a little sharper than it was yesterday. The sky is overcast, and there's a thick fog that clings to the mountains in the distance. Throughout the day, it drizzles on and off. Thorn insists this isn't going to put a damper on the fun! Well, it might make swimming a little less fun, now that he thinks about it.

After breakfast, the students have a few choices for activities, all taking place at different times during the day. Your student may do none of them or all of them! They may also remain at the camp and take it easy.

MORNING: Mr. Covington prepares breakfast as everyone wakes up. He tells a story about the special bond he built with a wild stallion that had been sent to his family ranch when he was a child, and how the experience taught him how to be a man. He tells Kurt Wolfhart that they remind him of himself as a young boy. He tells that to all of his favorite students, though. Sometimes more than once.

THE CAMP: Any student who wants to take it easy today can stay at the camp and relax. The fire remains lit, and there are assorted snacks available. Trixie Armstrong discovers a nearby bush of purple dragonscale wildberries, a magical plant which tastes tart, but warms you up for a few minutes if you eat the fruit. Mr. Thorn warns everyone not to have too many, though, or you'll get sick!

HIKING: Mr. Covington takes a group of students out on a more challenging hike. He advises that only experienced hikers come along with him. Essie Morales-Tran ends up twisting their ankle towards the end of the trip, and gets carried the last leg on Mr. Covington's back.

FISHING: Mr. Thorn wants to catch dinner for the campers! He gives tips on people new to fishing, and simple poles and tackle are provided to people who don't have their own. Afterwards, he teaches students how to prep their catches for cooking. Cricket Quayle catches a rainbow trout, which leads to a lot of jokes about eating Ribbonfins.

SWIMMING: If you want, you can try to go swimming in the lake, but it's pretty chilly. If you regret your decision, you can always run back to the campfire. On a dare, Henrietta Gray jumps in fully clothed, and then gets fussed over by the rest of the camp as they shiver uncontrollably.

EVENING: Dinner is served! Tonight the main dish is fresh-caught fish grilled over the fire. Dessert is a mixed berry cobbler. Unfortunately, it's getting quite chilly, and everyone huddles under blankets around the fire to keep cozy while they eat.

NIGHT: Clouds have swept across the sky, and it begins to rain in earnest, filling the tents with the soothing sound of water hitting the canvas. The temperature drops, and for a lot of students, sleeping bags just aren't enough. Mr. Thorn reluctantly agrees that if students want to huddle together in tents that weren't assigned to them, they may. You know what that means: rampant tent switching and cuddling for warmth! Your characters may spend the night in whatever tent they wish. However, if anyone gets too amorous, there's a 10% chance of being caught by Mr. Thorn or Mr. Covington. The tents are still designed for three people, but four can fit if you squeeze.

Despite the beauty of the rain and the forest around you, something about tonight makes you feel unsafe. It makes you crave the comfort of your dearest friends and family. It makes you want to hold them close, just in case...

After a fun, wholesome (yet, emotional!) day, Cricket is in high spirits and filled with a whirlwind of excitable energy. She is up and out of her tent before the sun. She offers to help Mr. Covington start the fire and prepare breakfast.

She tries her hand at making cauldron brewed pumpkin spice coffee. It's... passable, but not so good as the lattes she made with Wes a few weeks ago.

Anuhea always loves breakfast as part of camping. It is definitely her favourite meal of the day. She is her general quiet self and just sort of hanging around talking to those who would like to.

Diego wakes up his normal, chipper self... but by the time he arrives at breakfast, he's acting a little off for no apparent reason. If anyone questions his morose and uncommonly quiet mood, he'll explain that he feels sick today, and will probably go lie back down after eating.

Shortly after his early morning outburst, Levi comes charging from the far end of the camp and toward the fire to meet Cecil. He's waving a slip of paper around and the whole side of his left hand is blackened from his artistic endeavors with charcoal drawing.

He laughs as he hands this shitty, smudged drawing to Cecil:



"Bee my date to the dance?"

Although he's not much of a morning person back at Gooseberry, Camping Kurt loves mornings — camping mornings, that is. Kurt and his cowlicks are up with the Dawn Squad, and cheerfully helps prepare breakfast in whatever ways he's told to do so. (He's an uninspired and untalented cook, but can do very productive things like chop, pour, and clean on demand.) During Mr. Covington's story, Kurt sits open-mouthed, rapt. When the groundskeeper tells Kurt that (older) he reminds (younger) him of a (younger-version-of-older) he, Kurt seems embarrassed by the attention. Within five seconds, though, he's beaming, and manages a "T-t-thanks!" before he busies himself with helping to clean up breakfast dishes.

Clementine is also one of those up-with-the-sun people, so she was up and about by the time people were making breakfast. Unfortunately she's not a great cook so she probably hindered more than helped. She spent her pre-breakfast time looking for nifty rocks, but pitched in during meal clean up.

Essie is another morning hearthrob. (And now I finally have an excuse to use this icon.)

There's some whining about FIVE MORE MINUTES, but she is definitely faring much better than yesterday. She wolfs down breakfast and is in high spirits when the sleep fog finally dissipates.

Wes stumbles on out of his tent all wrapped up in his blanket and isn't fully alert until he has his coffee. Any conversation until then is extremely drawly to the point of unintelligible. Yes, he's the kind of guy who has to sit at the edge of his bed for ten minutes before he's ready to face the day.

THE CAMP

Ravi decides to stick close to the camp, since he's definitely not up to taking whatever Mr. Covington's idea of a VIGOROUS HIKE is. He'll get up at some point to try his hand at fishing or observe the people swimming around, but most of his day is spent by the oh-so-warm fire, finally catching up on his book.

Ferris is set to go and one of the first in line for hiking, she grew up in the mountains and is ready for anything thrown her way.

Kurt is down for the hike! In the 'I'm down for anything' sense, not the 'MAN DOWN MAN DOWN RED ALERT' sense, of course. He's prepared with a smaller backpack of essentials (water bottle! binoculars! coat!) and acts much like he did the day before on the hike in, although he's less likely to offer responses to questions he wasn't asked in the first place.

When Essie twists her ankle, he immediately tries to help her but also woefully confesses that he's not that great with field medicine.

Anuhea definitely chose to go hiking for the afternoon just to take in the opportunity. She is having a bit of senioritis as she is like wow won't be here next year for this.

Cecil will definitely come along for the hike! He enjoys himself through most of the journey, taking in the stunning scenery and the fresh air quite happily, but joins Kurt in fretting over poor Essie after she twists her ankle! If Mr. Covington weren't there, he would've readily carried her himself, but he'll just stick to fretting.

OKAY! DAY TWO! This is going to go so much better!!!

Essie has been on plenty of hikes with Diego around home so this idea sounds VERY FUN rather than OMG PAINFUL.

Unfortunately, Essie gets daydreamy near the end of the hike, catches her foot on a rock and taking a major spill. She tries to get back up and lets out a yelp which sends more than one boy running her way. This is way more embarassing than the initial spill and Essie turns bright red.

Aaaaand, then she is eventually hoisted onto Mr. Covington's back and this whole event starts to feel like something out of a romance novel, except for the part where Mr. Covington is like a grandpa.

FISHING

Levi's all about dat fishin' life. ... Except ocean fishing is way more exciting and Levi quickly loses interest about twenty minutes in.

The prep is where he shines and he volunteers to show people the proper way to clean, gut, and fillet a fish. He treats it like it's a normal, everyday routine (it kind of is) and doesn't flinch as he spikes them then bleeds them. Sorry.

Cricket finds herself sitting next to Diego at dinner. She isn't a mind reader, but she is perceptive and empathetic, so she can tell something is bothering him. Something about the chill in the air coupled with the high emotions from the campfire the night before makes Cricket drop her defenses. Besides, no one is paying attention to them, anyway. She scooches in close and offers him some of her blanket, but doesn't needle him for answers right away.

NIGHT

Kurt definitely feels uneasy as the clouds roll over. He's noticeably dismayed that, even though he brought an extra sweater and wool socks, they don't seem to do anything against the cold. When it's time to turn in, he does so, but somewhat reluctantly. He spends a bit of time preoccupied with papers that had been folded into his journal—the last owl he'd received from his younger sister—with a frown. He eventually pulls out a pen (which feels weird in his hand but it's easier to bring on camping trips), and tries to see if anybody knows what's gong on.
