{Wednesday, 4 October, 7 PM, the Atrium}

It's that time again, and this week is a Dueling week. This time, Sybilla is taking attendance and having members check in. As usual, the Atrium has been cleared out and in the middle of the room is the dueling platform.

The first half hour of the meeting is set aside for solo spell practice. Along the dueling platform are ten smaller targets for all your dueling spell needs. Work on your aim, focus, intensity, or show off any spells you've wanted to bring to the club. Antonia Papadakis finds their spell backfiring at them and gets hit square in the chest.
VOLUNTEER B inadvertently vanishes their target. Where did it go? Hours later they will find it on their pillow in their cabin.

Sybilla rises to the platform at 7:30 to take down the targets, and now it is time to duel. She makes a short announcement to find partners of their own accord, but that after this meeting, Dueling partners will be randomized and arranged prior to the next meeting. There's a strange flash in her eye as she scans the members and says “You all have to duel.” It is inadvertently very reminiscent of Tyler Durden but she is none the wiser and doesn't know that reference.

Casper Kim and Casey Patterson rise to the platform and start off the night. Following, Sybilla Borgin and Avery Davenport duel for twenty minutes before Ms. Lilywhite calls a draw. You still have an hour for other duels - make it count.

After the dueling has finished, members will find a basket levitating by the exit, full of chocolate frogs, since Blood Pops were not the hit Sybilla expected them to be. VOLUNTEER E’s chocolate frog hops away before it can be eaten and sticks to the chandelier overhead. It will still be there the next morning.

HOW THIS WORKS

Feel free to work out scenes in all the sections, have fun, socialize, etc. you know how this works.

RNG rolls for the solo target practice will be taken if requested, or get creative, up to you!

Feel free to ic/ooc the dueling and leave a comment when/if you'd like a roll, or work out results with your partners if you would prefer.

Come back next week to Dueling and Fencing! Next week’s meeting will focus on Fencing and some “self-defense maneuvers,” Sylla notes as the meeting draws to a close.

» Arrivals and Attendance: Club President Sybilla Borgin is wandering about with a clipboard and no, she doesn't know all your names yet. Comment and check in to note your characters’ attendance to the meeting - this is primarily to gauge interest in Dueling versus Fencing meetings split between weeks. Also she has to put names to faces somehow.

» Solo practice: Small targets are set along the dueling platform for the first half hour of the meeting, for all those spells you don't feel comfortable using on your classmates just yet.

» Dueling: Feel free to start new threads with your own dueling partners if you like!

» Departures, cleaning up, good nights: Leave the Atrium as you found it.

Jade’s very proactive about checking in. And about giving rare, unsolicited compliments about Duelling this year. Jade attends both groups and has since freshman year and she will be thrilled that Sylla’s taking this time to check in. She loved the blood pops. Have a weird follower, Sylla!

Essie has started attending dueling weeks as of this year! She has always attended fencing weeks.

Is here, memorable by an obnoxious pair of neon pink trainers. He shows up to both groups, but visibly takes one more seriously than the other. Sylla receives his compliments -- this is all loads of fun.

Checks in. ♥ He attends Dueling every single week, but will sometimes skip out on Fencing. :u

Pear is also a member of the Sylla Borgin Fanclub and does not miss duelling weeks. She's a little disappointed that none of the books from Sylla's personal collection are on display tonight, but chocolate frogs are very satisfying to consume, so she's not complaining!!

Jaime usually shows up to dueling and rarely shows up to fencing; he's definitely not the most dedicated member.

Casper is here. Casper is always here. He checks in but keeps the interaction as brief as possible; he's ready to get to work and he doesn't have much to say to Sylla.

Samantha is excited to be in Dueling and Fencing. She joined in after the events of last year, and is ready to work on her skills.

Is ready to DUEL!!! She thinks ALL the upperclassman are so cool and Sylla is like A LEGEND. She's very into this whole thing.

Tuesday is here, too. She only joined this year and actually prefers fencing. Her footwork is great, she’s a show-off with a foil and this all might end in her poking an eye out.

Is here, as always! He's never missed dueling weeks and has started showing up to fencing as well. He's as enthusiastic as he can be and mostly in awe of the fact that he gets to talk to Sylla Borgin. After checking in, he hurries off probably to go challenge Jade to a duel.

The head girl is here, looking incompetent for all to see!

Calvin is here, full of nervous energy and ready to handle anything Sylla needs from him.

Mackenzie is likely hovering around the senior Ebonboys for most of the meeting, hassling them on and off. Last year she would rather watch everyone's wandwork than actually duel, but then ghosts kidnapped her friends, you know how it goes.

Archie arrives late and nearly forgets to check in. Still, he's here, even if that... isn't always a good thing. Archie is a very unpredictable duellist, and as likely to hurt himself as he is someone else. Regardless of his repeated failures, he continues to show up, ready to try.

Rosy is diligent about attendance, and is always there for both dueling and fencing. It might as well be an actual class.

Samantha is new to Dueling and Fencing. She wants to get the hang of it, and hearing that they have to duel another person today is stressing her out. She gets to work on practicing some of the more common dueling spells on the targets, hoping for some feedback before she duels a real person.

As she approaches the line of targets, Antonia bends her wand between her hands like she's stretching a muscle. She still hasn't gotten the hang of these "battle ready" duelling stances, yet, because, let's be real, they look silly as shit. So, she puts a modicum of effort into looking very serious before flinging a jinx.

Maybe she didn't get the gesture just right. Or her pronunciation was off. Or, most likely, she didn't take the battle stance seriously and it's biting her in the ass, because the spell she fires fizzles and backfires. A bright blast that knocks her off her feet.

She gasps as she hits the ground, landing hard on her butt, hair looking a little windblown. A silent moment passes. She's dazed. And then she starts to laugh.

Find your partners, don't mind the Club President taking notes of repeated matchups and watching duels closely, etc.

(Note: there can be more duels than the ones noted above, throw yourself into it!)

The duel with Sybilla is so intense, Avery doesn't even realize a whole twenty minutes passes before Ms. Lilywhite calls it a draw. She's tired, but feels totally invigorated. She dueled with Sylla! She tied Sylla! President of the Dueling Club. It makes Avery feel pretty good.

Still, there's an hour left of to take on another duel, and despite being tired she pushes on. Who's her next partner!?

It's time. She's got to be paired with a partner and try and do something, right? Feeling nervous but trying to look totally nonchalant on the outside, Sam hangs around the sidelines for a minute. What unlucky fellow is going to be her partner?

When the time comes to transition from solo practice to dueling, Casper doesn't hesitate at all to step forward and volunteer for the first match. After all, every match is good experience and there's no one here he wouldn't be willing to duel. This...doesn't stop his dark eyes from narrowing or his jaw from clenching hard when he sees Casey Patterson moving to take the space across from him. No matter how much he'd like to forget about last week, he hasn't been able to. And Casey hasn't seemed to want him too either because he's been a fucking pest ever since.

He tests his grip on the blackthorn wand in his hand. He doesn't have anything to say to the other boy as he waits for the signal to start.

Casey usually sticks around for only the Fencing weeks but hey, he was looking for something new to dig into. And when Casper steps forward, all keen and serious? ... Duelling isn't his strong suit but there are some things he can't resist.

He steps onto the platform, brandishing his own wand — nowhere near new, definitely not made for him. His stance is indicative of someone who pretty much only attends the swordfight-y segments of the club. He smirks and raises an eyebrow. "'Sup?"

Casper's clearly not in the mood for this (when would he be?) and his hard glare finally makes the shift into a full scowl. "Get your guard up, Patterson," he advises sharply, just waiting for that signal to start so he can put the other boy in his place, "Or this is going to be very short."
