CALVIN VS. SY

There's no peace to be found at Ribbonfin this week. Instead of a prank, an unexpectedly intense fight breaks out between a Ribbonfin junior and a Coppertale senior, right by the fire pit.

HOW THIS WORKS

• Reid accidentally let it slip to Sy that the reason he's going to be under less scrutiny as the LGK is because someone told him they saw Calvin Evercreech beneath the Lake Gooseberry Killer mask.


• Sy immediately stormed off to Ribbonfin to confront Calvin, and within seconds it became violent. Calvin fought back.


• The fight was broken up by Rosemary Stoker.


• Reid did not reveal his source, and is also on scene, although he was too slow to stop the fight.


• Sy and Calvin are both sporting bloody noses and bruises.


• Both of them have received detention for fighting, but will still attend tomorrow night's monthly bonding.

Sy is breathing hard as he barges into the Ribbonfin camp, having practically sprinted all the way across the grounds from Coppertale. At this hour, he's flirting with breaking curfew, but getting in trouble is the absolute last thing on Sy's mind as he storms his way towards the fire pit and the boy sitting there, reading.

"I'm gonna fuckin' kick your fuckin' ass," Sy snarls as he pulls Calvin to his feet with one fist, and punches his face with the other.

Calvin's book (an autobiography penned by a British Healer) goes tumbling into the dirt, and so does Calvin. He's not used to falling, or being hit, although he should be by now. And yet it takes him too long to process what just happened. He lies in the dirt for several seconds as he connects the dots. His thoughts are muffled, his face hurts... and the first thing he feels is anger. Resentment. Hate. It's so different from his usual fear and terror. It's nice. He likes it.

"Shove off, prick," he hisses, and then Calvin's on his feet, punching Sy back hard. He's a Beater now; he's made to break faces.

Reid & Sy

"What the fuck," Reid says again. It's the only thing he's been able to say since arriving on scene. He was too late. He shouldn't have said anything. Normally Reid's problem isn't saying enough but maybe his problem is just that he's an idiot. Good job, Wainwright. Sy beat someone up, Cash is going to hate you, super fucking cool.

"What the fuck," he says again, but this time it's clearly directed at Sy. Reid fumes as he waits for an explanation. Although shorter and slighter than both of the combatants tonight, Reid storms up on Sy with no fear.

Reid & Sy

"Oh, fuck off," Sy responds, already moving to shove past Reid. His voice still sounds rough, but he can talk again. Unfortunate, as that just means Rosy and Reid are going to demand answers out of him. God, they're both prefects now. How the shit did Sy end up knowing so many prefects?

He just needs to get out here. Now. There's an audience of fishes forming, and he knows anything he says to any of them right now is just going to make him look worse.

Rosy is very disappointed

[browbeats]

Rosy knows she should say something. She should scream herself hoarse, she should let fly every obscenity she knows in both English and Spanish.

But with the fight over, the adrenaline drips from her body, and she feels drained. Drained, and disappointed. Sy said he wasn't going to get in trouble for this. And Rosy had believed him. She had wanted to believe him. That he would control his temper, that he would fucking behave. For her, if for nothing and no one else.

She can't keep the disappointment off her face as she looks at her twin, and doesn't say anything.

CALVIN

Ennis finally talks to Calvin

[sheepish]

Ennis isn't totally sure what the scuffle was about but if Sy is involved then Ennis assumes that Calvin was likely defending himself from the big, mean Coppertale. (Ribbonfins can do no wrong, therefore Sy is the bad guy by default.) That incredible elbow-to-throat attack was reminiscent of Ennis's own fight at Hogwarts and he feels a strange sort of pride in Calvin for defending himself.

Normally he was content to passively yet awkwardly ignore Calvin but it doesn't feel right returning to his cabin without saying something to him. Especially after the boy received detention for what Ennis believed was self-defense.

Ennis pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose and steels himself before approaching Calvin. His voice is gentle as a lamb as he praises the younger boy for his act of violence: "You did good, mate."

Cole doesn't like this

Drawn by the ruckus outside just like everyone else, Cole emerges from his cabin in time to see Calvin and Sy tussling on the ground and he tenses all over. He isn't good with conflict and even verbal arguments make him want to withdraw into himself so he can pretend that nothing's happening. Physical conflict is...different. Worse, maybe. And not something that he's had much experience with. But this is Calvin. So.

Fortunately, he doesn't get much further into convincing himself that he ought to do something before Rosy swoops in and pulls the boys apart, bringing the incident to an abrupt but definitive halt. Cole watches and, once there's more distance between the two boys, exhales a breath. He pushes his paint-stained fingers back through his dark hair. Then he stands just outside the cabin, continuing to watch and chewing his bottom lip until there's nothing left to see.

Sometime later, when Calvin's finally back in their cabin, he'll ask the other boy if he's all right. And what happened. And if he's in trouble. All with a visible lack of ease and unconcealed concern and a bit of paint in his hair that he's yet to notice.

What a night.

ANYTHING ELSE

Bein' Bystanders (Open)

Ennis hears the start of the conflict outside and looks to his roommates with a confused frown. "What's that?" he has to ask, because surely there's not a fight breaking out at Ribbonfin. He holds his finger to his lips and tilts his head as he listens more closely before determining that-- yep, that is the sound of a fight breaking out at Ribbonfin.

Ennis is up on his feet, stumbling into the side of the couch on his way out the door. He stops on the walkway between the Junior and Freshman cabins just in time to take in the sight of Calvin elbowing Sy in the throat.

Holy shit. There's a fight at Ribbonfin.

Innocent Whistling

Cash choses to respond to this fight by pretending it had absolutely nothing to do with him — something he can probably get away with because, to be fair, who would suspect otherwise? Calvin must know that this LGK information ultimately originated from him, but if he wants to discuss it for whatever reason, he'll have to seek Cash out. He won't address any of the involved parties directly, although, Reid... this is exactly why Cash wanted to gather all the facts before talking to you, Vector, anybody.

His fault for being excessively chatty. Stupid. In his defence, he'd been startled last night. In his persecution, that's not a very good excuse.

Whatever. If Calvin and Sy wanted to hit each other, that was their business. Bad judgment on Stoker's part shouldn't constitute a situation on his. Even if his loose lips did earn Calvin a bloody nose.

Ferdie Did Crowd Control

Ferdie lets Rosy handle her brother, but tries to make it as easy as possible for her to do so. He ran out seconds behind her. He’s Front Line Ferdie today; shooing back freshmen and other oglers with a calm precision. He’ll be taking points and referring this to the heads of houses. If anyone looks like they’re going to try to continue or jump into the fray, they, too, will lose points.

In the meantime, when everything dissipates, he takes a second to breathe and wonder a little when exactly Ribbonfin Diplomacy failed them all.

q that doesn't need to be answered now: how much will sy and reid's roomies know of the fight? (i.e. should casey expand his "i'm gonna flex threateningly" list for next week from hero, to hero and calvin?)
