Happy Birthday, Ursula! The Ribbonfin seniors have gathered together in the Magical Rudiments classroom this evening to celebrate their very own Octoprincess in style! The classroom is decked out in undersea decor for the celebration, with bright teal streamers and octopus balloons. The centerpiece is a truly ridiculous cake - supplied by the birthday girl, herself. Because Ursula knows self-care.

The main event here is definitely dinner, a group effort. Each one of the big fish has helped to bring the birthday dinner together. Ennis Harper takes the head chef position - as one of the few Big Fish actually able to cook - with Avery Davenport serving as his sous chef for the evening. Together with Yancey Montgomery and Chloe Shepherd, they create some seriously adorable cake pops. (Um, Yancey? The flour goes in the bowl, not on you.) Rosemary Stoker oversees the whole affair with a precision that would make any drill sergeant proud (are you worried you're going to burn the water, Rosy?) while Kurt Wolfhart and Ferdinand Ayers brave the wild world of cooking for themselves for the first time. As for the birthday girl, she's been advised to kick back and enjoy the show.

Rosy

Rosy stands back, arms crossed, an order ready for everyone except Ursula. The fact that she has no clue how to do anything in the kitchen does not stop her from bossing people around. It fuels her. She can't look like an ass if she's not doing anything!

"Be careful around the cake," Rosy says unnecessarily as the others bustle around the classroom. "You can't have it for dinner if it's on the floor!" Not that any of them should be eating cake for dinner. That does not seem like a complete meal.

Ennis is a far more benevolent leader. Every order is phrased as a polite question, sprinkled with a pretty "please" in there. He doesn't care if Yancey spills flour down his front or if Ferdie sets fire to a dishrag as long as they're all having fun!!

"Rosy, when you have a chance, could you please tell me how this cioppino tastes?" he asks, holding out a spoonful and cupping a hand under it to collect spillage. "The recipe called for cod but I omitted it."

Let it never be said Rosy doesn't hop to it when there's a job that needs doing. When Ennis asks for a taste test, she's there in a flash, happy to, like, actually have something to do.

"I wouldn't be mad at a little more salt," Rosy says, because she also doesn't know all that much about flavor profiles. She's just eaten a lot of fancy food. "But I think we'll survive without the cod this time."

Sous chef Avery is at the ready! She's been doing her best to follow every direction that Rosy and Ennis give her, and it looks as if she might have more food ON her than is necessary, but she's definitely trying hard and she's having a fun time helping out.

In case he agrees, Avery makes sure to slide the salt on over to Ennis so he can add it to the cioppino. She's never had it before, so she's kind of useless in saying whether or not it tastes right. "What else can I do, Chef?"

Chloe is not a boss. She's not a cook either. Magical Rudiments has certainly improved her skill over the last year or so. She can make things that aren't ramen noodles and frozen burritos now. Still, she's far from confident enough to lead the way on things like "ciopinno" (what even is that?). Luckily, there's no shortage of leaders. Like Avery, Chloe is ready and willing to execute instructions to the best of her ability.

"These onions are making my eyes water," she says, hovering over a cutting board full of irregular sized onion pieces.

Ferdie left Ursula's present by her chair. (It's a business/credit card holder, for when she owns the world, and that's what his note explains, too.) But that only took three seconds, so then he's all in for dinner preparation. He promised his other fishies he'd try, and damnit, Ferdie's trying. He's actually pretty good at things like chopping and mixing. Give him a recipe, and he's fine. Sure, when it comes to applying heat to food, his face grows more panicked by half, but he'll try to soldier through.

Ursula's a little bemused when she finds the small package by her chair, rather than handed to her directly, but the corners of her mouth quickly turn up in a small, very pleased smile when she reads the note. The actual gift is a delight. Sure, it's not romantic, but it's also hardly something Ferdie could have just picked up in the past couple days.

When there's a lull in the meal preparation and he's not supposed to be watching over anything that could burn, she gently tugs him aside. "It's perfect," she says and gives him a quick kiss on the cheek, hoping he won't mind the small show of affection in front of their friends. "I promise I'll remember this after you've given me food poisoning."

Ferdie gives a little stir to whatever he's working on before following Ursula away from the preparations. He's a little relieved. He'd had to order that weeks ago, and at the time, it had felt like maybe too much, too obvious. But now...well. Now he just wished there was a little more. "That's why I had to give it to you before we ate." He explains. His fingers reach out to brush against hers. Just very gently. "I needed some insurance against all that fish."

Can't really blame you, Ferdie. Ursula's a high maintenance girl, but even she understands the owl post isn't Amazon. The card holder is already proudly taking up residence in her handbag, the octopus a very sweet touch. "In the event we both survive the evening, I hope you won't mind if I steal you away later." Her pinky catches his when he reaches out, curling around it, not letting him get away so easily. Her smile is impish as she continues, "To discuss business card designs. I'd really enjoy your input."
