SHINNY BOOT CAMP

The lake may not be frozen, and the first snowflakes of the season have yet to touch the ground, but it’s always winter in our cold, dead hearts, so why not play hockey. With the water still annoyingly thawed, co-organizers Rosy Stoker and Hazel Keating have invited all players, old and new, to the Quidditch pitch for some fun.

And by fun, we mean rules, drills, and pushing people around. Welcome to boot camp, maggots!

MINUTIAE

• Sign-ups are still open! Get official and sign up here.


• Skating lessons will have to wait, but Rosy and Hazel did freeze a small patch of grass so you can practice passing and puck handling, so there’s a little bit of realism involved here.


• Boot camp is by no means required for those who want to play shinny this season, but it’s highly recommended, especially if you’re new to the sport or could do with a refresher course.


• Behave yourselves, children! If you don't listen to your overlords, if you're doing something dangerous, or if they just think you're kind of being a dick, said overlords will boot you from boot camp and possibly hockey. Appeals to their humanity will not be accepted. This is not a democracy, this is a dictatorship.


• Fill out the form and post it here so Rosy and Hazel can better talk shit about you.

» HOCKEY 101: Are you new to the sport? Have you been out of the game for a while? Get schooled here! Rosy and Hazel will hit the basics and try to answer any burning questions you might have about the wild and whimsical sport known as Intramural Hockey.

» DRILLS: No skating lessons, but that doesn’t mean you can’t practice shooting, passing, safety, stick handling, all the little things.

MISCONDUCT: Learn what is and isn't acceptable for each badge level, and practice roughing each other up so no one gets hurt. Green badges, why don't you go get some hot chocolate?

Lachlan knows little about hockey apart from what observing the game has taught him and he listens intently while Rosy and Hazel explain the rules. He definitely came armed with a small notebook and he definitely intends to take notes and ask questions just like the nerd good student that he is. He wants to be sure he has a thorough understanding of the game before getting started. Please give him an A in Hockey.

Lachlan & Noel

Noel isn't taking notes. Noel is barely paying attention. Noel is more interested in what Lachlan is writing down and a shadow falls over the smaller boy as Noel hovers from behind. He leans in to rest his chin on Lach's shoulder with a sense of casualness and closeness the average person usually reserved for good chums. Because to Noel, they are good chums.

"Always thought Utah was just a big desert! Didn't know it'd get this nippy!" he chirps, having enough decency to lower his voice but not enough to just keep his mouth closed. "It'll be like the footy team's back together!"

Ennis has put way too much thought into coordinating his outfit just to watch hockey drills; it's gotta look cute and a lil edgy but ultimately effortless... despite the great effort he put into it. He tried on several oversized sweaters before selling on the speckled charcoal grey turtleneck, pairing it with a halfrobe, boots, and skinny jeans. Hopefully it's enough to net him at least some De Luca Approval Points.

He waves to his friends on the field as he takes a seat in the stands, armed with a pair of binoculars for peepin' at Gooseberry's Burliest and a large thermos of hot chocolate to keep him from freezing to death. Sports are the best.

Name: Evangeline Bagman
Greatest Weakness: Skating lmao but that's not a problem today. She can passably skate but she's clearly more comfortable on a broom and lack the ease to quickly adapt while on skates. She also sucks at stopping.
Greatest Strength: Stick handling. Eve is good at using the stick as an extension of her body and therefore can pass and handle the puck fairly well. Her aim is on point, the force is there.
Anything else?: Hockey isn't necessarily a country past time okay guys.

Dinah!!

Name: Di Fieri
Greatest Weakness: I swear to God she's going to put someone's eye out with those eight miles of arms and sharp ass elbows. She can't seem to keep track of them, and always looks surprised when they end up in someone's face or hot chocolate or in the way of their stick. Also really bad at following rules.
Greatest Strength: A crippling lack of fear and respect for her own mortality.
Anything else?: I bet you anything she'll be the first to get in trouble for fucking up a green badge.

Quentin

Name: Quentin Youngblood
Greatest Weakness: Communication. He's probably not listening at least seventy percent of the time. Passing because he doesn't even know what means. He got this puck fair and square, get your own. "Does not play well with others"
Greatest Strength: Death wish. Complete lack of human or moral fear. Almost entirely possible he can skate even remotely well just because he doesn't worry about what'll happen if he runs into things or people. Basically a human wrecking ball.
Anything else?: Like having him on your team is technically good because he'll run into people for you. But also complete shit Bc he'll still probably run into you. 95 percent change he'll accidentally cause a fight in the first game. 90 percent chance that fight will be with his own team.

Nisha

Name: Nisha "Broken leg?? What broke leg???" Lewis
Greatest Weakness: Literally doesn't know what the FUCK is up with ice skating, probably will play hockey like croquette at first, and putting knives on her feet seems like a really really bad idea for everyone??
Greatest Strength: Shows up to boot camp the day after breaking a leg. Actively seeking death.
Anything else?: All the hockey sticks are too big for her she probably has to transfigure one to be funsized.

Nia

Name: Nia Papadakis
Greatest Weakness: Her bloodlust is at odds with her desire to be Lawful Neutral, driving her to being indecisive and/or basically a hockey werewolf. Also she's like...pretty bad at hockey.
Greatest Strength: 3.9 GPA, good hair, iron will and zero shame.
Anything else?: When do we get to the part with the rules-endorsed hip checks

Greatest Weakness: Easily distracted. Strong aversion to sadomasochism. (He doesn't want to hurt or be hurt more than necessary. What's wrong with you kids??)
Greatest Strength: Experience. (He doesn't need boot camp, he just wants to feel included.) Blocking flying pucks with his metal leg.
Anything else?: Noel fucks around and pretends to be an elegant ice skater, twirling through the grass before making a swing.

Greatest Weakness: Uh he's never played hockey before, is super unrefined on the ice.
Greatest Strength: Athleticism, desire to win. He gets caught up in team stuff very easily and will pretend he's not taking this seriously, but do whatever he can for Absolute Victory.

Greatest Weakness: Prissiness. She's going to get right the fuck out of the way if you come at her. She can take a hit and could probably dish one if she wanted, but why??? Why though?
Greatest Strength: Skating. She's good at it.

The ORGANIZERS quietly pick on people

Ahhhhh hockey season. The crispness of the air. The sounds of sticks clacking. The inevitable injuries. Hazel is so ready, especially with the league under the control of her and Rosy, and she shows up to the pitch perky and looking like she means business. She's got a notebook, a clipboard with the roster, and a sparkly quill ready to go.

There are definitely a lot of lessons and direction and the like, but during and in between exercises she stands with Rosy, quietly murmuring assessments and, honestly, writing some of them down on her copy of the roster. It's important to know your players, right??

'Lachlan Galbraith: Kinda neurotic???' she writes down before looking to Rosy. "...dude, picking teams is gonna be rough."
