SCHOOL TRIP: Juniors

SCHOOL TRIP: Juniors

As the junior class steps out off the Floo network, they're immediately hit by the humidity, in stark contrast with dry Utah. The excitement amongst the students (even if it's not totally unanimous) is palpable. They file onto buses, and soon they're on their way to the most magical place on earth. Everyone breaks out in high pitched teenage elation as the bus passes under the gate the proclaims this is the place where dreams come true. The Disney bus driver quips and jokes with the boisterous highschoolers.

Students are given packets that contain their hotel room key, park passes, allowance, a description of their dining plan and tickets, the itinerary, and a basic list of rules. For the most part, it looks like they'll have a lot of freedom, so long as they don't break any rules. "This is going to be great," Mr. Elmasty proclaims, who seems happy to be a kid more than a teacher this weekend.

HOW THIS WORKS

The junior class is visiting Orlando, Florida! They'll be staying in the Pop Century Resort.

They're in a block of rooms on the third floor of a set of buildings themed for 80's and 80's pop culture. The nearest swimming pool is themed like a 90's laptop.

Staff presence: Ms. Rhee, Mr. Elmasry, Ms. Whittle

Students will have to go through the North American Floo network, so they can't have any contraband in their bags, such as weapons or drugs. After arriving at the MACUSA Floo hub in Orlando, they'll be taken to their hotel on Disney property.

For the two non-travel days, in the morning there will be a set school activity that's mandatory, and in the evenings students can do whatever they want to.
- Friday: Our Body, The Universe Within / Orlando Science Center. Students leave at 9:00 AM, and return to the hotel at 3:00 PM
- Saturday: Disney World. Just... go. The staff knows that's the only reason you're here.
Juniors are given an allowance of $15 per day for food and leisure, as well as a Disney Dining Plan and a 3 day Parkhopper ticket to Disney World. Using the dining plan, students may spend "credits" on meals, allowing even those with minimal funds to go to expensive restaurants in Disney World if they strategize. Nice! Any room charges will come out of your character's allowance. They may spend their own personal money however they please.

Curfew is 12:00 AM. Teachers will come through to make sure everyone is in their rooms. The only exception is for the students who are staying out later for "Extra Magic Hours" on Friday and Saturday night at the Magic Kingdom. Mr. Elmasry will stay out until 1:00 AM with students opting to do this, and he'll return to the hotel with them.

Students are not allowed to take their wands into the Disney parks due to the International Statute of Secrecy. The staff give everyone a lecture reminding them about keeping their magic use under wraps.

The park will be busy because it's Thanksgiving Weekend, and it will be decorated for Christmas already. The weather will be fairly mild for Florida, but still expect heat and humidity.

ALTHOUGH THIS IS BEING POSTED ON 11/22, STUDENTS WILL NOT ACTUALLY BE LEAVING UNTIL THE MORNING OF 11/23!

Austin walks right in front of the camera, like he didn't notice Micah was in the middle of taking a shitload of pictures, and he is deliberately not looking up from his phone or cooperating. Despite the frankly ridiculous temperature and humidity levels, he's got a beanie and a scarf on, and at least one more layer than necessary. He says it's nothing, he's already used to Alabama humidity, but he's lying because this is terrible and suffocating and he feels like he's going to die.

"Right, well, good trip everyone," he says, glancing up only briefly. "Hope a magical time was had by all."

Calvin is running out of reasons to decline going on the spooky mansion ride. The first time he claimed that he needed a break from rides. The second time the line was too long, and he would rather go see something else. Now, here with Micah in the dark, it looks even worse. The dramatic lighting isn't encouraging. Apparently it's a classic, and Calvin has to go on it at least once, but at this point he wouldn't mind skipping it altogether.

But Micah had given him an option between this and the one where everyone's dropped down a waterfall screaming bloody murder. His hands are tied, and with all the young kids in line around them, Calvin isn't about to admit fear has been holding him back. He feels ridiculous as he hovers near Micah's shoulder. It's so crowded, and Calvin keeps inching closer to avoid bumping into any strangers.

"Are all these children allowed t'go on this?" he finally asks uncomfortably.

The only good part of being in Florida is a valid excuse to wear the shortest shorts you own. Ruby spent as much time as possible primping in front of the mirror in an attempt to assure that if she's going to obviously be part of an obnoxious teen tourist group, she'll be one of the hotter ones.

She did bring a practical pair of flats, though. Oberholtzer brand, charmed to be comfortable for all the torturous hours they're going to spend walking around a stupid baby theme park. However, if there's one thing that always improves Ruby's mood, it's shopping.

Ruby looks through the open doors of a store selling aggressively Disney-branded clothing and accessories, and grabs the wrist of the nearest person to pull them in with her. "I need a model. Let's go."

"Austin!" Micah calls out, camera still up in front of his face. "Show us your best Mickey Mouse and say 'cheese'!"

Solomon got a really rad pic of Micah taking a picture of Austin walking in front of their classmates. Solomon practically bounces after Austin. "We've only been here for an hour," he says reasonably. And he's pretty sure Austin has been sweating for that entire hour. Maybe nobody told Austin that they're not going to Alaska or Russia or some other cold place. Maybe Austin's just trying to be extra prepared. He gives a passing Goofy an enthusiastic high five even though the walking dog was clearly aiming for Austin. "Wanna go on a ride?"

"Myzithra," Austin says and keeps walking. Hey, stop sounding happy about all of this, life is pain and et cetera.

Austin looks over at Solo and he just, like, blinks at him for a full second. There are just so many people here, and he doesn't understand how this can be construed as anything other than a park full of misery.

"The line-standing ride seems real popular," he says, trying to hide how funny he finds his own damn self.

Solomon doesn't have to hide how funny he finds Austin because he's not a grumpy butt. He smiles brilliantly at Austin's joke. "That was funny. But if you just walk around the park all day, you'll die from dehydration because you'll sweat to death. And I'm not emotionally mature enough to attend your funeral yet."

Jade shrugs, not knowing anything much about the Star Wars books. "The film writers make money." She knows that much. She scoots on to a pillow, leaning forward and getting comfortable already. Probably whatever was said here tonight would be her personal canon, no matter what the movie brought. Fighting children? Jedi ones? The children in that temple all died. I supposed there could be a second generation."

Bash lifts his phone and screws up his face, one eye squinted shut and tongue sticking out unflatteringly as he snaps a quick picture to send off to his sister. (Her reply is fast. And rude. He grins briefly down at the screen.) His free hand drops down to absently scrub Lucas’ hair back from his forehead before he leans forward.

"Not just the books," Bash replies. "There’s comics and video games and cartoons. Lots of things that need writers." He chews his lip, adding a bright: "They’ve definitely gone next generation before. It’s a good jump off point."

Lucas grins up at Bash from under his hand and uses tucking his arms under his chin as an excuse to scoot closer. "Leia and Han's kids are the obvious choice," Lucas says once he's repositioned himself. He bobbles his head back and forth. "Or are you thinking of starting with more of a surprise twist, Ari?"

Calvin makes sure that Micah can see his dramatic eyeroll before he pulls the privacy curtain shut in front of the wash area. He has a change of clothes, a bottle of product and a comb in his arms. He's going to take his time. Or maybe he should hurry, since Micah just brought up Todd. Again.

"Doubtful," he scoffs, but not disdainfully. "Maybe if I'm holdin' the churros he'll think to look, but I'm not expectin' to compete with Disney World the first night we're here."

"It's Disney, Calvin. Children are allowed to go everywhere," Micah says, which isn't true, but neither of them know that. He appears completely unperturbed by either the crowd, the humidity or the weird organ music getting piped into their ears. Honestly, he's thrilled about the last bit. "Look, more tombstones!"

This late in the day, the line is actually pretty fast-moving, but Micah keeps stopping them to take pictures of the pun-filled fake graves. Everything about this faux gothic horror aesthetic delights him. He really should've put more gratuitous graveyard scenes in this play. "'Master Gracey, laid to rest; no mourning please at his request.' This one totally sounds like you! Come on, pose in front of it."

"Sure," Ari says. Surprise twists are a staple of the series, and the best part about them is you can just make whatever you want up. The more far-fetched, the better. "Boba Fett survived, and he's been training his children to exact his revenge for him."

"Well the food costs too much money here," he says. There's some kind of strategy to the dining pass, but he doesn't know if he wants to figure it out. Disney is a scam, you guys, why is he the only one smart enough to realize this? Gosh, y'all really need him. "So I guess it's stand in line for a water ride" (which, holy shit, everyone wanted to do, fucking obviously) "or spend all our money on a bottle of water and subsist on that shit for a couple days." It's not quite that dire, Austin, calm your tits.

After a pause that was honestly too long to seem super cool, he adds: "But, like, what ride do you wanna ride?"

Fun fact is my sister is actually in Disney world right now Bc she (and her marching band) got to perform in the thanksgiving parade there today

Less fun fact is I had to Google rides Bc I've never been

Solomon's face lights up, because this is clearly Austin accepting his fate and agreeing to actually take part in fun. "A rollercoaster," he says, with no hesitation and no attempt at being cool. "Wanna go on a rollercoaster, Austin? It'll be fun. And it'll dry the sweat on your face. And if you're actually hungry, i think I can afford like... half a corn dog maybe?" He looks so hopeful and helpful as he offers that. Austin need not worry, he won't be starving on Solomon's watch.

“Oooh.” Jade’s posture gets straighter and her eyes brighter. She gathers a pillow into her lap like this is story time a decade ago. “Against the Han Leila babies, or someone else?”

The smile on Bash's face only goes wider at the mention of Boba Fett. Any theory is better with the addition of Boba Fett. It's just science.

"Are they our antagonists or our protagonists?" he inquires. "Or are we going morally grey?"

Lucas snickers into his arms, but doesn't hesitate to prop his head back up and add to the interrogation. "And how long into the new series are you going to wait to explain how he got out of the sarlacc?" He pauses. "Or is that not going to be important?"

"That's the whole mystery of the thing," she tells Lucas first off, which is only to say she doesn't know. But those aren't the kinds of details she's fussed by, anyway. If you have the opportunity to use Boba Fett, you take it. "And you'd think they were the antagonists at first, of course. Han and Leia's children are lovable scoundrels. But one of them was a sith lord in the books, you know. Maybe the tables turn."
