I recently read that Eastern Europe and Russia often celebrate the Epiphany with their own icy water swimming, in which case we are at least a month early if you prefer to look at it that way.

I am in need of assistance regarding It seems a bit overprotective and counterproductive to require a standby for this swim. I hardly think all should need one. But I suppose Americans like to be overly careful with some things and remarkably slack with others.

No. I should not require a standby. I am perfectly capable of climbing out of cold water myself.
