The fact that Ennis is covering for anything seems to elude Lachlan; he's got too much on his mind right now to notice verbal nuances. He moves to pick up the card but doesn't open it. There's no reason to read those words again. "Probably," he says but doesn't move. He just sits there, beginning to fidget with the card again and thinking about all of the was he could mess this up and trying to think of any way that he might be able to fix it. His chest feels tighter than ever and he forces himself to take a breath.

"Ennis." He doesn't know why the other boy won't look at him and hesitates before continuing on anyway in a quiet voice. "What do I say to him?" More experienced or not, having had a boyfriend for a few years hasn't actually prepared him for turning down one of his closest friends.
