The thing is, though. I'd never say any of those things about Tally. But [...] I was a little jealous, earlier in the year. So did it know that? Or was it just a coincidence it decided to wear my face to mess with her? If it knew that, what else could it say with my voice that was just true enough to be believable?

...Which these strangers are making difficult. Yes. But there is a difference between a dark thought and what you truly believe.

I mean, sure, I guess. But the unsaid part is kind of important. If something brings your dark thoughts and secrets to light, is it any better just because you hadn't planned to say it? You either gotta lie, or people will still think different of you, right? I mean, what would Tally and Kenzie have said if I'd said, "Well, it wasn't me that said it, but I thought it."?

I think... yes. Maybe. The distinction matters. It is not a lie if you say, "No, I would never say that." It is not a lie if you say, "I would not want to hurt someone like that." It is your secret. You have a right to keep it a secret.
