{Saturday, 27 January, afternoon, the Atrium}

With the help of Ursula de Luca and Event Committee, Dueling & Fencing club hosts an informal mixer-type meeting where visiting family can observe what activities the club gets up to, as well as participate themselves. (Consider the time being not in conflict with hockey, we can handwave etc.) Finger sandwiches and sweets have been provided, floating about on charmed trays. For some reason the charm on the trays keeps jetting away from VOLUNTEER A who just wants a tea sandwich. VOLUNTEER B tries to hold one of the trays in place and gets a static zap that leaves their hand numb for several minutes. VOLUNTEER C, ever the social butterfly, chats up family and students alike, but gets numerous details as well as names wrong.

The corner of the atrium is host to a larger-scale target practice game, where participants can try to hit moving bullseyes as they dart and zoom about the wall. VOLUNTEER D sets one on fire, which Casper Kim puts out with a very impressive and powerful Aguamenti spell which garners a round of applause.

The usual dueling platform is where an informal family tournament takes place, with a charmed bracket board keeping track of who makes it to each round, depending on participation. VOLUNTEER F gets hit with a tarantellegra and nearly falls off the platform. Juniper Crane is dueling like they have something to prove, or working out a grudge against a family member or friend.

Meanwhile, there is a small area roped off for fencing matches far enough away from the stage. VOLUNTEER H has clearly never fenced in their life, but shows so much enthusiasm that nobody really minds. VOLUNTEER I ends up smacking a tray laden with cucumber sandwiches out of the air when they get too enthusiastic with their foil.

The meeting has an open house feel, so anyone is welcome to peruse and take part, regardless of membership.

HOW THIS WORKS

Playing it fast and loose, do your thing, feel free to add more mishaps or mighty triumphs, it's all good.

RNG rolls can be requested for the target game, just comment with how skilled they are at spellcasting and aim and such on a scale of 1 to 10 - remember, the charms are buggy, could this be a game of chance? Might want to try just to be sure.

Same goes for the dueling tournament - how skilled is your student and/or family member, how hard are they trying, scale of 1 to 10 as an estimation to be taken into account with the RNG rolls.

Same rules apply, please don't send your parents to the hospital wing to avoid your conference time.

» Socializing, sandwiches, those annoying charmed trays, etc.: Everything not going on with the sparring and dueling and firestarting.

» Target game: The spirit of healthy competition is alive and well, this time with the need to prove yourself to your family as well as your peers!

» Dueling: Again, no injuring your family members.

» Fencing matches: Same as dueling matches, have fun, don't stab anyone, show off, you know the drill.

Strictly speaking, Casper has no reason to be at this event; he has no family here to impress or duel or fence with. While he'd initially been inclined to avoid the whole thing, in the end, his rational side had overcome his mood and he'd decided that just observing could be beneficial. He could watch his classmates and gauge their skill levels. He could watch his classmates' families and maybe learn something. And, after Sylla had basically told him to bow out, he'd been determined to show up anyway.

Apart from putting out a fire at the target games (which earns him a round of applause that either seems to annoy him or make him uncomfortable), he's mostly just a silent and serious observer. If he's given the chance to participate, he'll take it, but he's not interested and forcing his way into anyone else's familial bonding or feuding.

Well aware that her mother watches closely, Juniper is on her toes the entire session, taking on each duel with a determination that's a little much for a basic dueling demonstration. It doesn't disagree with her; she's smiling as she takes a break of the sidelines, as her mother talks with a few other attendees. "Kim," she greets her fellow prefect, cheerfully, going to return the foil to it's case. "Having fun? We should duel. You're one of the few I wouldn't feel poorly losing to." She sweeps her eyes over the others there. "Very few."

The mechanical click-whirr of a shutter closing rapid fire sounds three times before Dimi lowers his camera away from his face, peeking over the viewfinder at two students as they sling spells back and forth. His smile is measured but still, somehow, terribly smug - pride etched on his face.

He turns from the duel, camera clutched carefully in both hands, and hurries to rejoin Sylla. He brushes against her lightly and wonders to himself how hard it might be to lead her somewhere where the two of them can have a moment alone. "You did all of this," he says, gravely, that west country accent thicker than it ever had been last year. "It's fantastic - what you've made. Looks like Bedwyr's having his fun. What do your parents think of it?"

Calvin takes a deep breath as he finds his spot on the duelling strip. He's obsessed over proper form enough to hit his marks perfectly, but it's never come effortlessly to him. Not many things do. If Dimi had ever taken to duelling, Calvin feels certain he'd exceed with easy grace, like he does with most things. It's a little admirable, but also extremely aggravating. Dimi could just give a rakish smile and try his best, which was always extremely good. Or at least, this is how Calvin remembers it. Luckily for Calvin, though, Dimi's never been an avid combatant with a wand. He's an artist, after all. (Or, alternatively, a brawler.)

Calvin points his wand down at the floor and turns to face Dimi, ready to impress. Hopefully. "Well?"

"Don't look so tense, Cal," Dimi teases with a smile he wears all too easily. It's a calculated move - throwing this particular opponent off balance before the fight's even begun is the only way he stands a chance.

Just as Calvin predicted, Damon has little regard for proper form. He shakes himself out like a fighter, bouncing back and forth on his feet and slicing his wand through the air a few times before saluting his brother and dropping into something that approaches a dueling stance. His grin is still fixed firmly on his face when he replies, "Alright!"

"Tense?" Calvin huffs a little. Calling him tense is like calling the sky blue, but just like Dimi wanted, it gets a little rise out of him. Dimi is the confident dog, Calvin's a cat with a bristling tail. Not that he can ever stay seriously angry with Dimi. In fact he's much less cranky than he's acting.

Calvin opens his mouth as though he's about to argue further about the tense comment, but instead sends a spell flying at Dimi. This isn't strictly within the rules of the duel, but no one should be terribly surprised.

Dimi's laughing when the spell comes his way and he has only enough time to raise his wand and turn - no shielding charm. He takes the zinger in the shoulder, stumbling back a little.

"Ah! Tosser! That's cheating." He accuses, though he makes no effort to hide the fact that he's impressed. Evidently being a high school graduate does not stop one from being a dumb boy. He makes like he's about to resume his stance, but fires off something obnoxious - like a slug hex - and easily dodged.

A casually scruffy young man in his late twenties sticks close to the fencing through the meeting. He's talkative and charming with his thick Northern English accent, complimentary and affable, and challenges nearly everyone to spar with him. He has nothing but gleaming praise to heap on all his opponents, and is a lovely bloke.

When he easily and quickly beats Sylla at their match, he laughs and gives her a light swat with his foil, which makes her frown and grumble. "Oi come on, love, be a gentlemanly loser," he laughs, pulling her into a hug, which she wrestles out of and goes back to quietly pout and be stoic with her father.

Meet Bedwyr Borgin. He makes polite and charming introductions and would love to spar with you.

Juniper is all about fighting new people. Bouncing on her toes a little, she waits for her turn to greet the other Borgin. "Hello, I'm Juniper," she offers, along with her hand. Her free hand, since she's already got a foil in the other. She knows better than to use Junie where her prim mother can hear. "You're quite good! Have you been sparring since your school days?"

Hello, Bedwyr! You've been recommended to this child as a fencing partner, and since Jade thinks Sylla's perfect, she has to follow through. Sorry. She makes a beeline for him as soon as she realizes there's a young British blond man in their midst. She taps him on the shoulder with her foil, shameless. "Hello. I was told you'd be an all right partner."

Volunteer E for Casper, please? Boy needs to do something while he's here~
