[Thursday evening, a small paper bag labeled 'Pippa' is hung on the handle of the Sophomore Ribbonfin girls' dorm.]

[Inside the bag is a small plush whale about 5" long, sewn with rudimentary skills and made out of two worn (but clean!) bandanas. It looks similar to the ones below but has a sewn smile and button-eye placement just like this drawing.]



[There's no card or indication of who the whale is from.]

That night, Pippa -- who refuses to take Dreamless Sleep Potions on account of their not being vegan -- puts a few drops of lavender essential oil on the whale and sleeps with it clutched tightly against her chest. And maybe it's just the effect of the lavender, and maybe it's something else, but for the first time since Halloween she doesn't wake up in terror from nightmares about the dead boy. Her sleep still isn't exactly restful, but it's better than it has been for the last three nights.
