LAUGHING DRAUGHT DISASTER

Seniors in Potions are working on laugh-inducing draughts. Takeru Maeda gets a little overzealous in their potion making, and the fumes hit everyone in the class (including Mr. Elmasry) very hard. Senior Potions students spend the rest of the day finding everything absolutely hilarious, and are impossible to talk sense to until well past dinner.

HOW THIS WORKS

• Senior potions is at 3PM, effects last until "well after dinner." That's plenty of time to wish for the icy hand of the Grim Reaper to take you and/or your classmates.


• Consider the following: if someone said "Know what happens to a toad that gets hit by lightning? Same thing that happens to everything else," to one of these poor sods, they'd have to laugh at that. And then live with that fact for the rest of their lives.

IN POTIONS CLASS

Takeru overdoes it

There's just enough time between the clinking noise of an ingredient bottle being fumbled against a cauldron and the "fwump!" of a potion going haywire for Takeru to say, "Oh, oops."

This is...so bad. Takeru looks at the plume erupting from his cauldron and titters. And then doesn't stop. Can't stop. He tries to hold it in, but just ends up snorting, which makes him laugh even harder. What a hilarious mistake!

Please don't fail him Mr. Elmasry.

Ty + Robin

Ty glances up just in time to see Takeru fumble with the ingredient bottle and can't help laughing when the resulting plume of colorful mist shoots up into the other boy's face. This leaves him unable to do anything but breath the stuff right in as it rushes through the rest of the room. Whoops? He spends a moment coughing...then lapses into helpless giggles. Standing alongside Robin, where he's been doing the reading and the ingredient-fetching while Robin handles the actual potion, he looks at his roommate and shakes his head incredulously. "Dude. Dude. Did you see that?"

He gestures toward Takeru then reaches over and mimics a 'ka-boom' gesture in Robin's face before starting to laugh again. This is clearly hilarious.

Cece & Kwinn

While not quite as tragically so as Herbology, Quinn is... bad at Potions. This is just a fact of life that she's learned she has to deal with. She's leaning over her and Cecil's cauldron, biting her lip and trying to discern exactly which hue of 'indigo' their potion is, when she hears the familiar sound of Something Going Wrong. She's focused on their potion, though, and doesn't look up.

The bubbles bubble, and one pops at the same time that a pen rolls onto the floor with a thunk. What timing! Ha! Ha ha! She snickers and looks up at Cecil, the snicker turning into a giggle. "Did you see that?"

Xavier & Ivy

Hey, you know what's great? Not being the fuck up for once. From his position across the room, near the door, Zav lets out a loud "HA!" as he watches the effects of the potion sweep out across his classmates - buddy, you haven't even been hit by it yet. After the novelty of not being a screw up has worn off, Xavier clamps his hands over his mouth and nose and shoots Ivy a panicked look.

Too little, too late. The corners of his mouth begin to twitch and he lets out a muffled hum of a laugh that grows until he has to pry one of his hands off his face to brace himself against the table.

Dimi & Mina

There's just something about taking six and a half years of Potions at Hogwarts that renders you immune to noticing the cock ups of your peers in the classroom. So, Dimi doesn't even react to the growing commotion around him and Mina, his attention fixed on the textbook in front of him.

"How do you think they figured out that this potion needed horseradish to work?" He asks Mina, glancing up at her.

What a silly word. Horseradish. It doesn't even look like a horse. Not even a little. Dimi starts to giggle at this thought. It only gets funnier the longer he dwells on it and after a moment, he has to pull off his glasses to wipe the tears from his eyes.

Leo & Rafael

Leo doesn't mind potions. It's difficult, but managable. Mr. Elmasry hasn't forced himself and Rafael into opposite corners or anything, so he gets to engage in some very professional flirting over chopped ingredients. He is showing off exactly how fine he can chop horseradish when he catches the mishap out of the corner of his eye.

Everything else happens in sort of slow-motion. He stretches his hand out to stop Takeru's potion, but obviously doesn't reach him on time. The smoke slowly spreads through the room, and Leo tries to act by covering his mouth and nose with one hand and Rafael's with the other.

And for some reason, his boyfriend with a sleeve over his nose looks hilarious. Leo's ineffective gas mask stays pressed in place even as he starts laughing from around his shirt. "Sorry." He says, muffled, "I don't think...this might not be working."

THEREAFTER

Penelope + Open [at dinner]

It's a weird day, isn't it? Penny hasn't laughed publicly just about ever. Sure, she smiles on occasion and she has been known to laugh but it has been a long time since she's had real reason to laugh. Normally it's like, a chuckle. A sarcastic ha ha. A guffaw, if you will. Yet here she is, nearly in tears laughing over some freshman's dad joke. Seriously. A freshman dad joke she just overheard walking towards the cafeteria for dinner.

Oh, now it's just occur ed to her that people might still find everything funny while they are in Duelling & Fencing club. Which is also hilarious, and makes her snort with laughter.

Why is this happening??? SHE IS GOING TO KILL TAKERU.

Senior Ebonboys Cabin, After Dinner

Ebonhides were not meant to laugh this much. Nate's face hurts. There are tears streaming down his face. This is hell. Nate didn't realize hell could sound so joyful.

"This is--" deep breath, renewed giggling, "--the third worst plague--" even the word plague, which had never had positive connotations even before this year, is goddamn hilarious, "--we've ever had."

Nate's holding his stomach, flopped over on his side on the floor. He couldn't even make it up to his bed because there was a bird watching him through the window. Get it? A bird! (There is no joke. It's just a bird.)

Evercreeches, after class

Dimi doesn't even make it back to the cabin. Glasses pushed up into his hair, he ambles over to the fireplace in the atrium and collapses into a squishy armchair, letting his face press up against the back of it. Head buried in the upholstery. It doesn't stop the laughter - it honestly just makes it sound funnier.

"Oh, hell," he meant for that to come out as more of a groan, but it simply sounds far too gleeful.

As a new wave of cackling hits him, Dimi shifts and drapes himself over the arms of the chair. He covers his mouth with his forearm and continues to giggle, eyes watering. What if Sylla sees him like this? Well, he guesses, it'd be pretty funny, wouldn't it?

At least it's a nice day? It's a very nice day. Xavier is sprawled out in the grass outside the lodge. It looks a little like he might be trying to make snow angels but without snow. Which really isn't that unusual for him, so whatever. Mostly, though, he's just writhing and giggling at everything he sees or thinks about.

The back of his head hurts. His stomach hurts. And yet the laughter still won't stop. He's praying for death to take him, but, he reasons, at least if he survives this his abs will be, like, fucking ripped from all the laughing he's doing. That's a plus, right?

Maybe if he lays here long enough, the sun will cremate him. The thought makes him snort, and the laughter bubbles up all over again.

Can Squirrels Laugh? Ty + Open

Sometimes being an Animagus is helpful but when it comes to a laughing-draught induced case of the giggles...not so much. While his laughter has been replaced by chitters and squeaks and high-pitched grunts, Ty still can't help himself and everything is still so funny. But oh well. Since making the attempt, he's decided to stay a squirrel for a while and has taken to romping around the Lodge, running and jumping and climbing on just about everything (from furniture to curtains to passing students)...and stopping for bouts of squirrel laughter, of course. He's definitely enjoying himself. Hopefully, nobody will accidentally crush him or anything.
