BEST FRIENDS POTION

A mimic disguised as Archimedes Rose drugs the water at breakfast with the latest version of his altered Amortentia. Luckily, the current batch is relatively harmless. However, it's not without any effect.

HOW THIS WORKS

If your student drinks the water, then they'll be convinced that the next person they see is their best friend. Why did they only notice just now how amaaazing this person is? They've never felt closer to anyone else.

Archie had been calling this latest failed attempt Philidosi.

The effects will last all day, and since this isn't necessarily dangerous, there won't be a quarantine. They will be keeping an eye on everyone, though. Just in case.

Archie will be accused of the drugging, but Ariadne Flint is able to provide an airtight alibi that saves him from punishment. It's concluded that a mimic was behind the incident.

All matches will be assumed to be reciprocated unless you specifically arrange something else. (For instance, if you wanted to play Stewart as thinking Alice is his best friend while Alice definitely disagrees because she was not drugged, you'll have to plan that on your own and inform the mods when you sign up.)

Since this is relatively harmless, staff will not impose a quarantine. They'll be keeping their eyes on students, however.

What Your Character Will Experience:
- The only warning is that seconds before the incident occurs, affected characters will notice that the water tastes a bit odd, but in a pleasant way. The first person they make eye contact with in that state will suddenly appear to be the more incredible, interesting, amazing person they've ever seen. Their new best friend. Why didn't they ever appreciate how great they were before now???
- At the end of the day, the affected characters will snap back to reality. They will no longer feel anything out of the ordinary.
Dr. Perry will be available to counsel any students shaken up by the day's events.

Here's the thing about Ulysses: the closer he is to someone, the more annoying he gets. Ask any of the Ebonhide seniors; they'll confirm. Oh, sure, after six years of Southern society charm school, he knew how to mind his p's & q's with acquaintances and strangers — but with best friends, he was a goddamn terror. Teasing and monopolising and otherwise stomping over boundaries with his unfortunate brand of intense, careless affection. Which is something poor Gwen'd be learning soon enough.

It's why he's got one arm braced on her shoulder now, leaning in close-close. Her words have him beaming. Why does he even bother hanging out with other folks when Gwen's so nice, huh? Gosh, he loves spending time with her.

"Aw, shucks," he replies with faux-modesty. And then, because this is a point of genuine insecurity and also because he's an asshole who loves fishing for compliments, "You really think I've got a shot?"

"Of course you do," Gwen answers, a mixture of aghast that he doesn't see it and amusement that he's even asking. "Who could win against you? I don't even remember who else is running." Truthfully, she doesn't, because up until now, she hasn't cared one whit about who was aiming for the court. She and Webster have only joked about it. "You and Kenzie have the whole fairy-tale romance thing, plus you are hands-down the most prom-king-like guy in our whole class." She blew out a dismissive breath at anyone else who thought they had a chance. "Even your posters are the classiest. You're fine. You'll be fine." The Ribbonfin pats his leg with all the assurance of a fish with a stubborn streak a mile wide. As far as she is concerned, he's a shoo-in, she just doesn't want to take any chances. "You do want it, right?" That is the only thing that will stop her from promoting the hell out of her bestie; she needs to be sure she's not just pushing him to do something outside his comfort zone. "You tell me if it's not the real deal, okay? I just want you to be happy. Don't do it only because you'd be great at it." That caveat ends up coupled with a grin. "Or because it would be fun to show everyone up."

Ulysses' nose crinkles with barely restrained laughter. Truth be told, he's a little hesitant about running; last year, he'd lost to Casey and the thought of failing something twice — and even worse, when all your friends knew you were actually trying — makes his stomach clench even through this blanket of security of his best friend's company. But then Gwen says the thing about showing everyone up and the flip-flopping fades because all right, yeah, she's read him good. That would be fun.

"Oh," he says, bumping his shoulder into hers. "I'm keeping you around. You could get a job doing this. Talking folks up, I mean."

"'Course, I can't hire you as my guy if you're gonna be running yourself. Conflict of interest." Ulysses yawns and stretches a little, then Wingardium Leviosas his bag over to where they're sitting, too lazy to stand. He's got some bubble gum in here somewhere. "You are gonna be running, right? You and your boy both."

"Me? As what, Queen of the Hicks?" Gwen laughs easily at the jibe she made against herself, unbothered at her rep. "I'm not prom queen material, and that's fine. Webster would enjoy the hell out of it if it happened, but he's not that invested, either. I think we entertained it for about two whole seconds. Before we saw the posters. I couldn't have my face splashed all over the place, thanks." She is quite content to sit here with him, just chatting. It's so easy to hang out with someone she trusts as much as she does Uly. Seeing him root around in his bag, she reaches into her own and holds out two honey sticks. "Want one? Strawberry flavored, got them the other day. Anyway," she continues, blithely, "Why wouldn't I talk you up? You're a blast. You always make me laugh." Ironically, that was somewhat true outside of today's events, although she'd never had reason to look at that before.
