ROUND ONE: Obtain a Disguise!

Apparently, you need a password to get into the Magical Rudiments classroom today. The freshman stationed outside doesn’t seem terribly picky about what that code word is though, because he’s letting everyone in.

Inside, the lights have been dimmed and the walls have been decorated with maps and blueprints and blurry black and white photos. A crudely drawn diagram of the interior mechanism for a safe has been drawn on the blackboard. A number of large chests stuffed with costume pieces and parts from drama and LARP sit in the middle of the room. Makeshift changing rooms have been set up along the sides.

If you’re going to pull this heist off, you’ll need to obtain some disguises.

Welcome to Round One of Let’s Steal Prom!

HOW THIS WORKS

• Competitors are limited to those teams which previously signed up. Each team is presented with a set of cards listing their 'role' for the event. These roles are for flavor purposes only and have no effect on the final outcome. The freshmen helped.


• Post your pair under the THE COMPETITORS heading, and play out a scene based on the current round's scenario. For every tag, Manx will RNG a number between 1–25 to add to your pair's score.


• Current Scenario: Each team is given an hour to put together an outfit to wear during the prom heist. There’s ten years worth of drama productions, so assume you can find whatever you’re looking for in the chests. Competitors are encouraged to use their assigned roles as inspiration and to select names for their new identities. A panel of freshmen will be judging the final results. They dislike you all equally, so this is fair.


• Up to 6 tags per pair will count for your score each round, i.e. you only get a maximum of six RNG numbers to add to your score. But feel free to tag more or less!


• Scores for round 1 will be rolled until Thursday, April 26th 11:59 PM EST. Since this is the first round and several players are in various states of hiatus, extra time is being provided. First round results will be posted on Friday. Scores will carry over into subsequent rounds.

» THE COMPETITORS: Between drama and LARP, any costume piece you could hope for is nestled inside one of these bigger-on-the-inside chests. Build the outfit of your dreams, but please don’t fight over that beret.

Flotsam&Jetsam Pick Outfits

"Limburger." Ferdie says for maybe the fourth time, enunciating each syllable like it's going to make more sense now. "Limburger Cat Burglar." It doesn't help, and continues to sound like a smelly cheese litter box theft situation. Was this all a joke? He's trying to go along with it, anyway, and pulls out a black stocking cap from the chest, turning it over in his hands. "I've...never had to dress for that before."

Spira vs Fancy Clothes

Ira isn't one of the contingent of juniors constantly up for LARPing at the drop of a pin. Imagination games make him struggle a bit, and he doesn't quite understand why they have to dress up for this. He has half a mind to just forget about all of the actual activity and make out with Spencer in the dressing rooms for the rest of the allotted time, instead. But it's kind of public, and maybe they should probably try just a little more than that.

Ira eyes the trunks with some trepidation, anyway, leaning heavily on the crutches that are his companion this week, following his date with a hoop snake. "So I figure I can probably just wear a nice suit and like, a story about how I broke my leg skiing down my pile of diamonds?"

Nap Mom & Squonk Are Weird

"Oh!" Georgie holds up a massive pair of sunglasses, rimmed with rhinestones, and holds them up to Griffin's face. A couple of the rhinestones have been knocked off, but a professional getaway driver can't be worrying too much about the pristine quality of their sunglasses, can they??

"I think you need sunglasses if you drive, don't you??" Georgie does not actually know for sure. She's never driven and her only contact with vehicles has been either jumping out of their way when she wanders into town to go to the thrift store or dinosaur museum back home, or the school bus to get them here. But she's pretty sure a lot of those people in their terrifying trucks back in Malta wear sunglasses, and they look exactly like this.

BUTT DANGER COVERS THEIR DANGER BUTTS

Chad takes off his glasses first of all, because he's pretty sure English people did better with monocles. "'EY. GUVNOR." Very strictly, Chad doesn't need to shout at Dinah, she's right there.He's also imitating poorly every single British accent he's heard on television or in movies, to get into character. It's going poorly. He drops it. "SO as a demolitionist you should PROBABLY just explode all this and we win. Right??"

He looks quite proud, like he's found a loophole. He's wrong.

Loot the (Sexy) Booty

The first thing Riley does is grab a blue gel pen from her pocket and write "Sexy" in front of both their roles. Now they're ready to do this thing.

"So I'm, like, a shark?" Riley asks, finally squinting down at her card and trying to figure it out. "Do I need a fin? What if I just wear a bikini and I'm like, fuck you, this is my costume?" Just try to argue with that logic, judges.

Salubrious Sword

Somehow, Lachlan hadn't expected this to turn into wearing a costume or playing a part and he looks down at his card with a deer-in-headlights sort of panic for a long moment after receiving it. Just what's he gotten himself into? He doesn't have the nerve to be a card shark (even if being excellent at math has always made him decent at cards) and he definitely doesn't have the nerve to attempt Yancey's accent in front of him. But it won't really come to either of those things, will it?

Feeling himself beginning to get wound up, he pulls in a breath and leans over to peek at Yancey's card instead. His lips turn into a lopsided smile. "Oigh. Do you think...these are backwards?" Do the freshmen not know which of them is which or are they messing with them on purpose? Which is worse?

Titanic Panic

Cameron knows that Iliya is only here for him, but he's determined to make this a fun experience for both of them. He's halfway there already, because he's delighted with this whole thing. Titanic Panic is a great team name, and he likes dressing up and playing silly roles (he hasn't been in drama for four years without reason). Things only get better when they get their roles. "Okay, so, you're a 'Swedish Mafioso' - how do Swedes even dress? - and I'm a..." he grins, "A ' Bulgarian Black Widow'." He pauses for a moment, then says, in his best imitation of Iliya's Eastern European accent, "I will need furs, yes?"

Princess Sparkle

"Canadian is just like American but boring," London says with a pout, "Oooh, or I can be French Canadian, since you're French, that way we can both do accents?" She says this all as she is aggressively digging through one of the chests, haphazardly throwing items over her shoulder and onto the floor. She'll clean that up later, probably. Anything that looks promising, she sets in a pile beside the chest. "So you need like... a beret. Or do we want tiaras?"

Innocent Nun

Innocent Nun. "That's us alright," Fern comments. Alright, so they have to dress up and come up with names and stuff. She's not the most into LARPing out of everyone in their class, but she isn't above it, as exemplified by her stint as the barbarian librarian when they had to play house. "So. 'Tasmanian Train Robber' and 'Greek Mock Millionaire'. Let's start with you. Tasmania is in Australia. So, maybe a bandanna for your face, but a bush hat instead of a cowboy hat."

Adverse Drug Reaction Has An Adverse Prom Reaction

"So are we stealing prom or burning it to the ground?" Danny asks as he stands over an open trunk, arms akimbo. And then, quite without warning, he throws both hands out, steadying himself as though the floor were just shaking. "Oh, no, wait, hold on. I'm getting something."

He raises his card to his forehead, like he's getting a vision. "I see...kilts. You're in a kilt, Stoker. You look...ridiculous." A pause. "But also kind of endearing, in an embarrassing way."

Archie & Nisha are Hero & Marie

Pickpocket is not a career Nisha had ever considered, but now it seems like a great one. Roxie probably knows how to pick pockets. She should ask for lessons.

"Oui oui, baguette, je voudrais un steak-frites," Nisha says to no one in particular. Because that's French. And she's getting into character. Then she sways, bumping playfully against Archie. "Dude, we're like a 1960s spy movie or something?" The prospect is evidently exciting, because she dances back and forth on her feet a bit. "I love mod."

Nerf Herders

There are a lot of options being presented here. Scads, even. Basically, there are a shit ton of things to look at and Bash has no idea where in the hell to begin. Like - petty thief. How petty we talking - like Gavroche grabbing apples or small-time jewel heist petty?

"I feel like I should preface this entire experience by stating that I know literally nothing about Argentina," Bash says. Then pauses, wrinkles his nose in something that might be contemplation or might be something vaguely resembling shame. He's on the fence. "And that picturing Antonio Banderas is not only incorrect, but possibly a bit racist."

Catwomen acquire Disguises

Jewel thief is a role Ari was born to play, and she takes great joy in putting on an Audrey Hepburn-esque pair of sunglasses as she roots around in a costume trunk. But even though her costume will be fairly straightforward to assemble, Jade's might be a little more difficult.

"Where is Macedonia, anyway?" she asks, pulling a handful of scarves out of the trunk. Jade is much more traveled than she is, and she trusts her to know.

Pirate Ninja

Having Grace as a partner in crime is a welcome break from campaigning with Ophelia, but Todd still has his reservations about what's happening here. For one, decoy is very not his style. He'd rather be a highwayman or something cool. Second of all, he's not super smart, and he's misunderstood Grace's assignment entirely.

"How are we supposed to dress you up as a fence?" he gripes, imagining something more of the white picket variety than the criminal one.

The Varmints! (ง •̀෴•́)ง

Jeffy's heard of Luxembourg. It's a... country? OR a MUNICIPALITY maybe?? It's pretty small. But Jeffy can't do any kind of European accent. He can barely even do a proper varmint accent. But he's more practiced at the second one, so... everyone just suspend your disbelief for a second because Luxembourg is now a town in the heart of Old West Texas.

"Well I guess we ain't gonna have to stretch too far to make these work, eh, Miss de Ville?" he asks, as if he's not already stretching this pretty fucking far.

Lake Gooseberry Killers

Sy kind of knew this challenge would be ridiculous, since it's fuckin' Gooseberry, but he'd already made the emotional commitment to do anything it takes to win when he heard Rosy was joining this too. Maybe one day he'll grow out of needing to compete with his twin, but today is not that day.

He... isn't quite sure how to win this one, though. "What the shit," Sy says as he looks over at Clem, "is a Luxembourgian?"

Munificent Mermaid

Ophelia only knows a little about muggle pro-wrestling, but she has an idea of what the women on it wear. "High boots, booty shorts, and a sports bra." She flexes her muscles for JD and makes a facetious 'sexy' duck face expression. "Think I can pull it off? Maybe we met when you were swindling some high rollers." Ophelia doesn't know the difference between boxing and wrestling.

Wagonman

“Italian counterfeiter sounds sexy,” Eve notes, wiggling her eyebrows at Salem over the trunk she’s currently digging through. “I don’t know what a Texan or a pro wrestler looks like but my name’s gonna be Helga, the Undying.” She grinned exuberantly, pulling out a wig from the trunk and trying it on. It looked like it was straight from the eighties, shaved right from the scalp of a hair metal band and immediately shoved into a trunk for thirty years. “I dunno what a Texan name sounds like either.”

Shoeless Swan

Austin doesn't know how they wound up here, but this is definitely what he gets for telling Ennis to fuck off. Maybe he shouldn't have been so determined to avoid his cabin. A crying, coughing ghost that might be trying to give you ghost pneumonia and making your bed ice cold could have good constructive criticism.

Whatever, they're in this stupid thing now.

"How do you even steal a dance?" he asks, not even moving toward the costumes. "Do we have to take the people, too?"

"Is a bespectacled Dracula too cliche?" Webster asks Lilika, holding up a black cape. Believe it or not, Transylvania Hacker isn't a look Webster has rocked before. "I'm thinking my character wants attention in the hacker community," he starts to concoct a backstory, "So he might air on the side of... flashy?"

Hmm. He looks around at all the clothes. What could be a statement piece? A signature calling card...
