THE SORTING OF DAMON EVERCREECH

Late on Sunday afternoon, there's a new arrival at Gooseberry. The vacancy in the Coppertale senior boys' cabin has been filled by a new Hogwarts exchange student, Damon Evercreech.

Damon is greeted at the lodge by the four heads of house: Mr. Hightower, Ms. Rhee, Mr. Merrill and Ms. Vector. They're also joined by his little brother, Calvin Evercreech. After the house elves collect all of Damon's luggage, the group walks out together to the Sorting Cave to deal with the formality. It's clear that everyone knows where Damon will end up, and Ms. Vector's just a tiny bit smug about it. She informs Damon that she used to teach at Hogwarts herself, and she hopes he finds the transfer to Gooseberry as rewarding as she did.

Anyone is welcome to hike out to the Sorting Cave to watch if they're interested, although attendance isn't mandatory. There are rumours of a small (teacher approved) party taking place after the ceremony.

WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN

Attendance is not mandatory.

The sorting will take place at 7:00 PM, and the party will run until 9:30 PM

Damon will return to see that his belongings have been left in his new cabin under his loft bed.

Tomorrow, Damon will be shadowing his new prefect, Rafael Ramirez, who will give him a tour of Gooseberry and explain all the rules and expectations.

Under the circumstances, Damon will receive some leniency about his senior project. It's required for graduation, but Damon will have access to help from teachers to design a reasonable project for him. He'll also receive extra help getting him caught up in his classes.

» The sorting: Damon is introduced to the gathered students and sent into the cave.

» Audience: The people who have gathered to watch the somewhat anticlimactic sorting.

» Spies: Do you want to take a peek at the new kid without being seen? You can hide in the bushes and spy on the ceremony.

» welcoming party: Meet the new kid! Socialize! Roast marshmallows! Staff has given everyone permission to hold a small welcoming party outside the Sorting Cave. While there will be minimal adult oversight, you are not allowed to go into the cave and bother the emblems. Additionally, it might be a bad idea to bring alcohol that's not a personal flask.

"Thanks, Rafael." Damon says, repeating his name to commit it to memory. Probably important to remember who your prefect is.

"Very charming sorting ceremony this school has. The bear made some pretty convincing arguments, but I think I wound up in the right spot." He trails off for a moment, but then adds, "Oh, ready for tomorrow? Ms. Vector says I'll be playing your shadow. Learning the ropes."

"Ebonhide is one of my favorite houses, but it was the bird that almost got me instead. Yet here we are, both in Coppertale." Rafael shrugs lightly. When he thinks back to his own sorting, Rafael's not always happy with his decision.

But that's not the story to tell to your new roommate who had no choice but to be in Coppertale. Rafael had hidden those sentiments from everyone but Wes and the anonymous post. He smiles at Damon, and tries not to think of him as a replacement.

"I am very ready for tomorrow. Please ask me if you have any questions. There is a lot to learn, and because of..." Rafael trails off, "recent activity in the woods, the teachers are watching closely that we follow the rules when we're outside. I will tell you about all of that as well."
