THE SORTING OF DAMON EVERCREECH

Late on Sunday afternoon, there's a new arrival at Gooseberry. The vacancy in the Coppertale senior boys' cabin has been filled by a new Hogwarts exchange student, Damon Evercreech.

Damon is greeted at the lodge by the four heads of house: Mr. Hightower, Ms. Rhee, Mr. Merrill and Ms. Vector. They're also joined by his little brother, Calvin Evercreech. After the house elves collect all of Damon's luggage, the group walks out together to the Sorting Cave to deal with the formality. It's clear that everyone knows where Damon will end up, and Ms. Vector's just a tiny bit smug about it. She informs Damon that she used to teach at Hogwarts herself, and she hopes he finds the transfer to Gooseberry as rewarding as she did.

Anyone is welcome to hike out to the Sorting Cave to watch if they're interested, although attendance isn't mandatory. There are rumours of a small (teacher approved) party taking place after the ceremony.

WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN

• Attendance is not mandatory.


• The sorting will take place at 7:00 PM, and the party will run until 9:30 PM


• Damon will return to see that his belongings have been left in his new cabin under his loft bed.


• Tomorrow, Damon will be shadowing his new prefect, Rafael Ramirez, who will give him a tour of Gooseberry and explain all the rules and expectations.


• Under the circumstances, Damon will receive some leniency about his senior project. It's required for graduation, but Damon will have access to help from teachers to design a reasonable project for him. He'll also receive extra help getting him caught up in his classes.

» The sorting: Damon is introduced to the gathered students and sent into the cave.

» Audience: The people who have gathered to watch the somewhat anticlimactic sorting.

» Spies: Do you want to take a peek at the new kid without being seen? You can hide in the bushes and spy on the ceremony.

» welcoming party: Meet the new kid! Socialize! Roast marshmallows! Staff has given everyone permission to hold a small welcoming party outside the Sorting Cave. While there will be minimal adult oversight, you are not allowed to go into the cave and bother the emblems. Additionally, it might be a bad idea to bring alcohol that's not a personal flask.

Dimi is all big smiles and polite, enthusiastic chatter with the heads of house on the way to the sorting cave. It's very exciting to be in the United States and he's heard so many interesting things about Gooseberry from Calvin. This whole "emblems" thing sounds particularly novel. Hogwarts just has that old hat and this school has an entire cave?

"Any suggestions?" Damon asks his younger brother as they stand at the mouth of the cave.

Tess is here to watch the sorting, though she's rather amused at the whole thing, since he's basically already sorted. She's also hopeful that this will change the dynamic in the boys' cabin for the better.

Ravi comes to the Sorting, for Calvin and Rafael's sakes. Also, Damon is going to be his new classmate from here on out, so Ravi wants him to feel welcome! He's going to applaud when this Sorting happens, okay. Everyone should get the proper Gooseberry experience.

Chris actually showed up for this?

It's been a long day. After hockey (the last hockey ever), Ty trying to get his fool self killed, and then team Gooseberry quidditch practice, he's a little tired. The black eye that had steadily developed, grown and darkened throughout the day is pretty impressive.

He thinks sorting one kid that's clearly in coppertale is stupid but he showed up for it anyway because he was about to live with this kid. He might as well get a look at him. He stands back beside Tess (leaning against a tree with his arms crossed over his chest probably)

Sun-mi Choi

Sun-mi is also here for Calvin and Rafael. (Calvin is a very nice boy, so his brother should be too??? She hopes???) There will be cheers and WOOs when he completes his Sorting.

Robin

Robin is here, because Robin ain't gonna get secondhand information on this new roommate. He's gonna see this fucker get sorted his own damn self.

Turns out it's not that exciting.

Cole Moss

Damon's arrival is important to Calvin and that means that it's important to Cole. So he's here. While he waits for the ceremony to start, he doodles foxes in his sketchbook, but he'll actually pay attention once things get started.

Ty Hawkeswood...isn't here.

Ty is in the infirmary tonight and not at all happy to be missing this! Someone give him an update later? And don't chase the new guy away before he comes back to the cabin? :(

Ivy!

Ivy's feeling a little wistful with graduation coming up so quickly, so she's happy to attend one last sorting! Plus, new friends are always fun.

Cecil Honeychurch

As Head Boy, Cecil wants to support all of the students and that includes Damon and the rest of the senior Coppertale boys. So, of course, he's here! He'll applaud with the others when the Sorting is done and try to give Damon a proper Gooseberry welcome.

Rafael

Rafael is here because it's his responsibility. He tries to justify to himself that Ty doesn't need him. He's surrounded by plenty of people worrying, and Rafael would only overcrowd him. There is absolutely nothing Rafael can do.

He feels guilty anyway.

Regardless, he has on a professional smile, and applauds for Damon. He wants to make a good impression on his new roommate. Vector insisted he needed to be here, and he needed to pull himself back together. There was a near miss with her asking if he needed to 'talk to somebody' which Rafael artfully dodged.

Or possibly Take 3 if you count the skinny dipping. Either way, Essie is a ridiculous person and she is 100% hiding in some bushes trying to get a peek at Calvin's "I guess so?" cute older brother as soon as possible.

Well of course Damon sticks around for the party, my goodness. He's ready to mingle, although he will occasionally rubber band back to Calvin to get his little brother's input on various students.

As a horrible person who has so much homework and quidditch practice in the next few days, Leo couldn't justify an entire night socializing. He does stop by this for a little to scope out meet the new Coppertale, though! So he comes here and spends a small while before disappearing again.

Chris Park

Chris sticks around for the party only because it's an excuse to not focus on any homework or studying or quidditch or the fact that they are officially done with hockey Who gets ownership of the binder now or Ty.

He doesn't really socialize well if he's sober though? He's not antagonistic but he's got an impressive resting bitch face and doesn't naturally look social either. He's not even trying to low key get drunk either. Chris seems unusually somber.

Quinn

Quinn slinks in for the tail end of the party after Mufferaw all but threatened to pick her up and throw her out of the infirmary himself, even though she was being quiet as a mouse. A mute mouse. Whatever.

She's curious about Damon (who wouldn't be?) but is also quieter than normal. And a little sulky. Chris' comment explains why pretty well, and she sticks by him for most of the time because HE HAS NO OTHER CHOICE and also because they have adorable matching black eyes on opposite sides of their faces. ♥ Friendship ♥

Calvin

Calvin is here to give Damon his opinions on everyone and everything, which mostly means he's hovering at the edge of the party watching when he's not following Damon around. Whenever anyone asks him about his brother, he's beaming. You can't rely on him for any information on Dimi that isn't glowing praise.

Robin Youngblood

Robin is watching everything.

Robin is taking mental notes.

Robin is drawing mental conclusions.

He's about 90% certain the Eldercreech is here to spy on someone, he's just not completely sure who.

Cole Moss

Cole doesn't know what to do at parties when he's by himself and, as things get started, he's mostly just lingering and watching his classmates and thinking. He isn't certain if he should approach Damon with Calvin and he hasn't seen his friend since the Sorting, so he eventually drifts over to stand by the bonfire instead.
