THE SORTING OF DAMON EVERCREECH

Late on Sunday afternoon, there's a new arrival at Gooseberry. The vacancy in the Coppertale senior boys' cabin has been filled by a new Hogwarts exchange student, Damon Evercreech.

Damon is greeted at the lodge by the four heads of house: Mr. Hightower, Ms. Rhee, Mr. Merrill and Ms. Vector. They're also joined by his little brother, Calvin Evercreech. After the house elves collect all of Damon's luggage, the group walks out together to the Sorting Cave to deal with the formality. It's clear that everyone knows where Damon will end up, and Ms. Vector's just a tiny bit smug about it. She informs Damon that she used to teach at Hogwarts herself, and she hopes he finds the transfer to Gooseberry as rewarding as she did.

Anyone is welcome to hike out to the Sorting Cave to watch if they're interested, although attendance isn't mandatory. There are rumours of a small (teacher approved) party taking place after the ceremony.

WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN

• Attendance is not mandatory.


• The sorting will take place at 7:00 PM, and the party will run until 9:30 PM


• Damon will return to see that his belongings have been left in his new cabin under his loft bed.


• Tomorrow, Damon will be shadowing his new prefect, Rafael Ramirez, who will give him a tour of Gooseberry and explain all the rules and expectations.


• Under the circumstances, Damon will receive some leniency about his senior project. It's required for graduation, but Damon will have access to help from teachers to design a reasonable project for him. He'll also receive extra help getting him caught up in his classes.

» The sorting: Damon is introduced to the gathered students and sent into the cave.

» Audience: The people who have gathered to watch the somewhat anticlimactic sorting.

» Spies: Do you want to take a peek at the new kid without being seen? You can hide in the bushes and spy on the ceremony.

» welcoming party: Meet the new kid! Socialize! Roast marshmallows! Staff has given everyone permission to hold a small welcoming party outside the Sorting Cave. While there will be minimal adult oversight, you are not allowed to go into the cave and bother the emblems. Additionally, it might be a bad idea to bring alcohol that's not a personal flask.

This is quite the networking party! When Dimi learns that Cecil is Head Boy, he's sure to commit that to memory. No causing trouble in this guy's vicinity, right?

Damon thanks Cecil graciously for the welcome and assures him he's already quite charmed. He found a few spots on the way to the sorting cave he'd like to come back to and get pictures of during the day.

This assessment of Gooseberry prompts Cecil's smile to broaden; despite the strange events of this year and the last month or so in particular, he loves this school and that shows plainly on his face. Then he tilts his head slightly, curious. "You're a photographer, then? I know Rafael's showing you around tomorrow; there's no shortage of picturesque places here. If that's something you're interested in, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Especially once winter's over."

"Oh yes, hoping to make a career out of it." Dimi nods enthusiastically, "I'll look forward to it. There's always interesting shots to get in early spring. What about you? Handy with a camera at all?"

"Me?" Cecil gives a soft, sheepish laugh and shakes his head. "No. I'm not...artistic, really. Just a nature lover."
