VERITASERUM LESSONS

In Potions, the juniors and sophomores are being introduced to Veritaserum. Mr. Elmasry allows a few students from both years to volunteer to try it and experience the effects first hand, but warns them not to do it if they aren’t prepared for the consequences. He also advises that they not write in their journals before it’s worn off. The effects of this batch will last three hours. Be careful, it only takes ten seconds to do real damage!

As per the Harry Potter wiki: "Veritaserum is a powerful truth serum. The potion effectively forces the drinker to answer any questions put to them truthfully, though there are certain methods of resistance." The primary method of resistance is Occlumency, so unless that's something your character excels at, you're SOL. AFAIK, there's no "truth-blurting" effect to this potion, so you'll only have to divulge information if someone asks for it specifically.

WHO'S AFFECTED

Sophomores Sebastian LaCroix, Jade Otterwell, Solomon Webb and [OPEN] volunteer to take the potion.

Juniors Avery Davenport, Reece Downing, Rosemary Stoker, Veronica Powers and Kurt Wolfhart volunteer to take the potion.

Passerby Diego Morales also gets roped into taking the potion, somehow.

A sensible human being would take this moment to actively choke themselves to death and avoid this entire conversation. But, in the spirit of honesty, Sebastien Lacroix is not a sensible person. And seeing upset girls stresses him out. So he swallows his sandwich instead.

"Hi?" This may or may not come out on a squeak. Whatever. Shame is for other people at this point. "I - should I be doing this in order? Shit, I don't remember what order the questions were in. Um. Do I - Yes? To the last one? It'd be a real shit thing not to care if somebody was in trouble. Or upset. Are you? In trouble or upset, I mean?" He blinks. "I don't - I don't know if we're friends. Are we? I wouldn't mind if we were? That'd be nice?"

"I'm upset, I guess." She admitted. Whoa holy shit here Sam is admitting a Real Feeling. This is what Solomon does to her, dangit. She is seriously starting to rethink this friendship. When Bash says - completely honestly - that he thought being friends with her would be nice, she visibly goes from distressed to a bright smile in like a second flat. "Really?" She is... surprised. Sam's First Concern is making friends. That is all she wants from life. To have good people around her, who have her back.

"You don't think I'm... mean? Or think I would be, because of... people I hang out with sometimes? The people I think are friends?"

"That sucks." That was blunt. Shit. Um. God, this stuff sucks. "I mean, you're kind of intimidating? And maybe you're mean sometimes - but, like, we're all sixteen. So it's recreational high school levels of mean. Not like anybody here's a sociopath or nothing. Probably. Um. It's - nobody's nice all the time."

Well, maybe Gabi. But Gabi's a goddess and no one can convince him otherwise.

His shoulder ticks up. "I don't always like how people talk about each other, but it's not always my business."

"I'm not mean to be mean. I just - joke around, I guess in a way that not everyone can handle." She shrugged, and then placed her forehead on the table and let out a groan.

After a moment of wallowing, she sat up straight again and pushed her hair back behind her ears. "How am I intimidating?"

And a follow up question. "If you had to pick the top five kindest, and nicest boys in the sophomore class... would Solomon be on that list?"

"Some people need soft things? Like, words and sounds and shit. That's just -"

Then her head hits the table and he jolts a bit like he's being electrocuted, fingers curling and spreading, but not quite reaching forward.

"Um. Well, you're a bit balls-to-the-wall? Which ain't a bad thing. But it's still a thing." Then he's tipping his head and smiling. "Yeah. Solo's - he's awesome. He's great."

"I can see that being annoying but not intimidating." She shrugged, but then Sam wasn't one who needed soft words or soft things. She liked noise, she embraced chaos. Hell, maybe she was a little chaos.

Samantha is fine that he considers her balls to the wall. He has to be honest, right? If he thought she was a wretched crazy bitch, he would have said it. Balls to the wall, that's a decent assessment. She liked it.

Then she saw the look on his face and she sat up straighter, jaw dropping. "Oh my God, Bash, do you like him like him??"

"Too much loud can definitely be intimidating."

His sisters are intimidating. Every single god damn one of them. Both individually and as a collective unit.

"Solo?" His eyebrows knit together. "Do I - No. Not that there's anything - There's nothing wrong with that. But, just - I -" He shakes his head. It's insistent. "I mean, I love the dude. But no. Not like that."

"Alright, maybe you're right. I get it."

She's not upset, intimidating, balls to the wall. None of those were necessarily bad things. She's glad that at least two people don't think she's mean, and want to be friends. Or in one case, maybe more?

Sam's laughing at his reaction, it's not exactly what she expected but it isn't far off. "Well good. Because I'm calling dibs."

It's okay if she doesn't. He can provide character references affirming the scientific validity of his belief. Y'know. If necessary.

"On Solo?" Huh. Nice. Good for Solomon. "What, you gonna lick him like the last Oreo or something?"

Please inter-district those character references in an annoying manilla envelope that's way too big for the papers and has no real use afterwards except to take up needed desk space by end of day tomorrow, thanks.

"Yeah, on Solo." She says, smiling a little. Maybe Solo is just what Sam needs. "Bash!" She gasps at his words though is clearly not even remotely offended. "A lady doesn't kiss and tell. Or lick."
