SOPHOMORE SÉANCE TOO!

Someone take Micah St. Clair's Ouija board away from him because the sophomores are at it again. In response to several students being trapped in the forest for hours last month, Estella Morales-Tran and Jefferson Key organize a sophomore excursion into the Grotto, to communicate with the Anonymous Writer with a Ouija board.

It's late; well after midnight. The night is cool and clear as participants gather near the Ribbonfin campsite to take the newly discovered shortcut to the Grotto. A few students hang back on the path while the séance participants head in.

The theatricality of the last sophomore excursion is gone, replaced with a clear sense of urgency. There is no idle chit-chat. There are important questions to be answered. Requests to be made. This time, there’s no table or incense or mood lighting. Just a blanket and the board.

Calvin Evercreech leads while Micah stands back with his camcorder to capture the events as they unfold. The rest of the séance squad steps forward, placing their fingers on the planchette, prepared to learn as much as they can about what’s been happening at Gooseberry.

» BEFORE THE SÉANCE: Sophomores sneak past prefects, walk along the newly discovered Grotto path, and arrive at the séance. Do they leave a trail of Skittles in hopes of finding their way back later???

» DURING THE SÉANCE: The main event!!! Ask your questions of the Ouija board, journal with your friends who stayed behind, take notes, etc.

» AFTER THE SÉANCE: Was all the preparation for nothing or does calamity strike? (Apparently this is still super against the rules!!!)

Calvin sits cross-legged in front of the ouija board. His nerves are betrayed by how fidgety he's being. He runs a hand through his hair, takes off then puts back on his glasses, folds and unfolds his hands, adjusts the planchette so it's perfectly centered, fusses with the buttons of his impressively boring cardigan. He periodically looks up at where Micah is, hoping that he'll edit out all of Calvin's squirming from the found footage horror movie he's probably going to make out of this encounter. Calvin can't wait to find out how his "character" dies horribly.

"Is everyone ready?" he asks tensely.

Isabelle

This is an awful idea, but Issy isn't letting her friends go alone. At this point, honestly, she was convinced that there wasn't anything that bad about 2. The group that got lost were barely lost for like, three hours. That was hardly anything. Maybe Ulysses had just gotten himself lost in the woods? Or at least, these were happy thoughts Isabelle was feeding herself as the group got ready to head into the woods.

She made sure she had everything she needed - her notebook, list of questions they had mentioned wanting to ask, a badly drawn map she had made for herself, water, food, another jacket just in case. Finally, she left and met up with the other Sophomores, looking (hopefully) determined.

Micah jumps when the planchette flies out of everyone's hands, but he keeps his grip on his camera. His palms are sweaty and his knuckles are aching from squeezing the camera so hard, but he's a professional, and he resists the urge to swing around looking for the planchette. His job is recording, not reacting. Micah pans out on his camera, taking in the whole seance circle.

He feels someone suddenly grab his shoulder.

"Oh my god, Ari," he whisper-hisses. "Your hands are freezing."

Back at the Azurcrest Boys' Cabin

Lucas lays a line of salt at the front door and then turns to look at his work. The fireplace, every window, and Will's bed are all guarded by neatly poured trails of salt. It's maybe a little artsy, even? Like, it wouldn't make a bad photograph, maybe.

He thought about burning some sage, earlier. But Lucas didn't have any sage. So he went outside and pulled some leaves off a random bush and lit them on fire with incendio and it didn't really smell like sage at all. And now he feels a little nauseous. But whatever, man, it's cool. Maybe it's close enough.

Cold iron is supposed to be good against these things, too. Uh, what does he have that's iron? Criminy, he really should've prepared better. Lucas shuffles around in his desk drawer until he finds ... a spoon. Good e-fuckin'-nuff. Every little bit helps. He pockets it and then picks his journal back up to take a peek for another check-in.

"What the hell."

Cole & Calvin

Even after returning to Ribbonfin with some of the other boys that had attended the seance and settling into the familiar cabin around the small fireplace (now lit and glowing and warm), Cole hasn't said a word. The most intense and immediate of his fears have faded but he's still shaken and it's difficult for him to think, let alone articulate. That's not so unusual for him, though. Has anyone even noticed in all the chaos? Probably not. So, for now, he chews on his bottom lip and his dark eyes move periodically between the fire and the sketchbook open in his lap (the clean page on top touched only by a few indistinct lines) and Calvin.

He'd followed Calvin and Micah out of the woods, kept his eyes on their shapes ahead of him until they'd made it safely back to Ribbonfin, and it's comforting to have the other boy here. If he'd gone to Azurcrest with Micah and the others...he doesn't know what he'd do. When he looks up again and sees his roommate walking over he goes still. His lip stings, like it might start to bleed soon, and so he forces himself to stop biting it and finally finds his voice.

"Hi, Calvin." It comes out like a whisper, but it's something.

Hazel & Fern (Copperladies Don't Need No Sleepover)

While some of the others had decided to spend the night in a cabin not their own, Hazel and Fern were intent on making the trek back to Coppertale.... and heading back has never felt so long. With the adrenaline slowly seeping from her body, Hazel is exhausted but still jittery, and she's desperate to get home to her bed and Joe Montana and, honestly, anxious just to get inside, even though she knows that affords them no real safety. Ultimately though they don't even need safety, right? Nothing bad had technically happened, right??

"Everything is fine," she says to Fern, the words meant to reassure them both. "But like... what the fuck?"

Also~ We ended up not making a section for the away teams, but since the sections are broken up based on time, please feel free to scene within them even if you aren't going into the Grotto. ♥
