Well, I gave Mr. Merrill the third degree about this whole Killer-of-Gooseberry-Lake thing in class today and he insists that nobody's ever died here. Either there's no future for my career as an investigative reporter, or we don't have to worry about masked terrors after all!

Me too, honestly! Halloween's creepy enough without ghosts or serial killers roaming around. And I'm not that attached to journalism as a career anyway.

That was a fun lesson. It almost makes me wish we had a whole unit on school legends.

Although I suppose most of them will end with Mr. Merrill saying, "but okay, kids, you know the DVD player really isn't haunted, right?"

I did actually ask him that after class but he was just like "nobody has ever died at Gooseberry, the school, which has only been here ten years". And to be fair to him the story is clearly about a student and not like, a day hiker from the 90's.

Yeah, OK, if we're all going to believe a HISTORY TEACHER when he tells us THINGS DIDN'T HAPPEN YEARS AND YEARS AGO.

Like what if it was someone who had nothing to do with the school at all???? Like a vagrant with a hook hand and no teeth and he like tried to attack students or something and THEN THE TEACHERS ACCIDENTALLY KILLED HIM and they concealed the crime and this ALL goes back to hubris of adults thinking they KNOW BEST for us.

Professors trying to be enigmatic can be ever so tiresome. We are very nearly adults, and here to gain knowledge, there should be a certain level of trust there.

Horror movies have just made people weirdly obsessed with spooky shit happening at camps, so someone made this story up to scare freshmeat at some point.
