427th Quidditch World Cup Finals

QUIDDITCH WORLD CUP FINALS

The World Cup stadium and encampment have been populated since April of this year, when the opening ceremonies took place and the matches began. The vibrancy and livelihood of the temporary city make it hard to believe that it'll be gone in a few weeks; some people roam the dusty streets between pop-up restaurants and bars like they've lived here their entire lives. This weekend, there's more to do than ever. There are people here from all walks of life and corners of the world, selling food off of carts, busking for spare change, or swapping stories and trinkets for meals and drinks.

The entire encampment is one big party. There are Quidditch celebrities from every team imaginable in attendance (many people even insist that Harry Potter is here somewhere), and it's a great networking opportunity for anyone who wants to go pro after school, especially if your more influential classmates get you into the good parties and make introductions for you. Even though the USA has just lost out to Japan for third place, the mood is high.

On Sunday, the big game starts at two in the afternoon. Don't be late; this is going to be one exciting match.

WHAT'S GOING ON

On Friday, Japan and the USA compete for third place, with Japan taking the bronze. The Bulgaria/Brazil game is on Sunday. Bulgaria takes the World Cup, 170-60.

Tickets to the game and permits for campsites are pretty expensive, and might be a stretch for some families. However, Faye Turner's dads purchased her a luxury tent and tickets for a handful of her friends. Feeling generous and sentimental, she gave one to Anuhea Alapai and raffled the rest of them off before winter break last year. The other five tickets went to Quinn Cunningham, Jeffy Key, Oz Zabinsky, Levi Kramer and Tess Noble. (If your character could conceivably make it to the World Cup on their own, be considerate about these slots! They're for people who want to go but wouldn't be logically able to due to money issues.)

Anyone from Gooseberry, Hogwarts, or Ilvermorny is more than welcome to stay in Faye's tent with her on her dads' dime! Allegra Sykes and Jaye Staley are staying with her, and are varying degrees of excited to see you all again. Warren Bartley had also made plans to stay with her before he and Addy broke up, and Faye forgot to tell him that she'd changed her mind about this, leaving him without accommodations for the weekend.

Ulysses Quayle has the dubious luck of running into British journalist Rita Skeeter outside of their tent on Saturday evening. She hassles them for a quote. No matter what they actually say to her, she writes that they were "grievously heart-broken over the USA's astronomical failure to perform".

One of the Brazilian reserve chasers takes a shine to VOLUNTEER G, and is chagrined by their own bold advances when they realize they're a teenager. So much for a celebrity fling!

VOLUNTEER H takes the mic at a karaoke party on Saturday night to sing a song of their choice. The crowd eats up the performance. Maybe you were born for the stage?

The legal drinking age in Argentina is eighteen. Please be responsible, adult children.

» FRIDAY: The Japan v USA game is today at two in the afternoon, and most of the attendees for Sunday's game will arrive this evening. The big party tonight is hosted by the Japanese team in celebration of their victory.

» SATURDAY: There's an extensive slate of events and celebrations for today, including panels and talks about the Quidditch industry, a hot-dog eating contest hosted by the American team, and a free-to-attend stunt flying display held in the Stadium.

» FAYE'S PARTY: Faye Turner is also throwing a grown-up free party in her tent on Saturday night, if you want to get your underage drinking game on.

There’s only so much quidditch merchandise that it’s humanly possible to carry back to a tent, but apparently, no one told Tess that. She has multiple t-shirts, a couple of hoodies, several hats, a couple of pennants, two fleece blankets, and myriad smaller items. It really looked like she was going to make it, too, until a kid running between tents side swiped her and everything went tumbling out of her arms.

RNG MINI GAME! The USA team is hosting a hot dog eating contest. Stick your character's name here and tell me how many times you want me to roll for them. I'm rolling a d20 and you're trying to hit 50. If you go over your character is puking, possibly on a Quidditch Superstar. If anyone hits exactly 50 they win the ENTIRE CONTEST and get a PRIZE. Otherwise, whoever gets closest to 50 did the best out of any Gooseberry student, but didn't win. They don't get a prize. Just bragging rights.

I had to edit cause this was bugging me: 50 is an arbitrary number. Nobody actually manages to eat 50 hot dogs on this fateful day. Whoever wins can decide how many hot dogs their awful character actually ate.

Quidditch is good. Family is good. Camping, when it's not done as though you just came over on the FUCKING MAYFLOWER, is good ~~enough~~. Having a decent buzz is good. Having a decent high is good. Having the munchies, while at times inconvenient, is, today, good. Seeing friends around is good. Not being in the woods is good. Free tickets are good. Being thousands of kilometers from Gooseberry is good. No more high school is good. Food trucks are good.

This picnic table that Quinn just found, and claimed by sitting on top of, is also good.

This kebab... this kebab is very good. She may regret it later, but for now, she lives in the blissful ignorance of not knowing that soon she'll make the unwise decision of entering a hot dog eating contest.

She tears a hunk off the stick-o'-meat and swings her legs under the table, knocking the seat with every go. She looks content, even happy, with a smile on her face as she watches the hustle and bustle of a massive sports tournament. Everything about this is good, except for the part where it's going to end soon, and the part where Team Canada got eliminated too early for her to watch them play. She'll get over it.

The Quidditch World Cup is the first time in weeks that things start feeling normal. Not that it's Sy's life that went off the path. Not exactly. Rather, it's Rosy who went through some kind of seismic shift, and the uncomfortable realization that Sy doesn't and can't understand what's happened. All he can do is not say a word when Rosy sneaks into his room at night, the way neither have done since they were small children, huddling under blankets during a thunderstorm.

It was tough to convince Rosy to come out to Argentina with him, but not nearly as impossible as it would've been before... whatever the fuck in the woods. Sy doesn't know if that's a good or bad thing. Hell, he doesn't want to think about it. It's not until Saturday evening that Sy manages to detach his clingy twin-barnacle, and he sets off into Party Tent Town.

Sy finds where the Decourts are camped from memory, and dawdles outside for a couple minutes. Should he... knock? What if he's invited in, and has to talk to Clem's father? What if he's not invited? In the end, Sy opts for scribbling a warded message in his journal ("Hey, I'm outside") and settles in for a wait.
