Umm... It's definitely an unusual method but I wouldn't discredit it, especially if he feels this strongly about it. I know "backpack spillage" sounds unorthodox but people have been reading the patterns in the way things fall for thousands of years. One of the methods of Phyllomantia involves predicting omens from observing fallen leaves.
