CARNEY PARTY 3; WILD WEST

Saddle up, partner. This New Year’s Eve, we’re heading out west!

The Carney house is decked out in a rustic Wild West theme. The place is covered in hay bales, mason jars, and cacti (even inside). Cameron greets each guest that arrives with a silver pistol that shoots paintballs. For dinner, a house elf catering company appears, cooking barbeque over a pit in the yard. There’s also plenty of alcohol - beer, liquor, wine, you name it.

HOW THIS WORKS

Everyone in the school is invited! As with parties Cameron has held in the past, the rules are simple: have fun, don’t make too much of a mess, and if you break something reparo it. The party starts at 6 PM, and anyone is welcome to stay the night and take the bus back to school from here in the morning.

Characters without costumes can pull an item from the costume chest, but once they pull, they’re obligated to wear it or risk mockery for being a spoilsport. There is also a mechanical bull riding contest out in the yard. The character with the longest ride will win a prize! You may do each of these up to three times, and I’ll keep rnging for them until 11:59 PM on 1/1.

There will be party games including truth, shot, or strip and spin the bottle/seven minutes in heaven.

» FOYER; COSTUME CHEST: Those without costumes are encouraged to pull at least one item from the chest set up in the foyer. Whatever you pull out, you have to wear! The chest is charmed so that you can’t see what you’ve got until you pull it out.

» LIVING ROOM: Have a seat on a hay bale! Or a regular couch.

» BACKYARD: The yard is surrounded by facades that mimic an old western town. There’s a heated pool and a hot tub, but the lows tonight are 21. Beside the pool, there’s a mechanical bull surrounded by padding. If you can go for the longest ride, you’ll win a prize!

» DEN; PARTY GAMES: The den has been set up for party games, including truth, shot, or strip and spin the bottle/seven minutes in heaven.

» BEDROOMS: Anyone is welcome to stay, but it’s up to you to figure out where, because Cameron isn’t organizing it. There are five unlocked bedrooms, plenty of couches and chairs, five full baths, and lots of floor space. Work it out.

» MIDNIGHT: Near midnight, Cameron encourages everyone to stop what they’re doing and come outside, where champagne and sparklers are handed out. The fireworks start about ten minutes til, crescendoing during the countdown, with a big finale at midnight. Grab someone to smooch!

» MORNING AFTER: Who’s hungover and where did you puke? Did you stick around to catch the bus back to school from Olympus?

Cameron laughs a little, forgetting that he promised he wouldn't. "Casper, I think if she likes you, well... she's got to know you at least a little. You're... prickly. But it's part of your charm." Even drunk, Cameron's noticed that Casper hasn't answered his or Iliya's questions. "You didn't mean nothing mean by it, right? She probably knows. Or if you don't think she does, then... tell her? If it's important to you."

"Cameron is right. You have said worse things to all of us, yes?" He means this affectionately, but it comes out a little flat. But Iliya knows his roommates are used to him sounding blunt, just as they're all used to Casper sounding unkind sometimes. "It is important. You would not be telling us if it was not."

What's this? A small cluster of Ebonhide senior boys, looking focused and kind of serious? Well, good golly gosh, guess it's time for their worst roommate to barge right in. Head's up, boys. Somebody sensed you were having fun without him.

The word "important" catches Ulysses' attention as he walks over, pricking up his ears, but not, somehow, prompting any additional consideration. In fact, his attitude is all casual as he strolls over to the edge of the pool and sits himself right down in the middle of the conversation. Then, he flicks Iliya's hat.

"What're y'all talking about?" There's no need to recap for him; he can learn to listen like a normal adult.

Casper hasn't forgotten the promise and he shoots Cameron a glare. There's not much heat in it, though, and any heat that had been there disappears when his friends reassure him by reminding him that he's an asshole. And that anyone that liked him would know that he's an asshole. It's true, but still. He sighs and looks off...only to see Ulysses trotting toward them. It's a surprise but not an unwelcome one. Even if he knows immediately that Ulysses is going to enjoy this conversation more than he ought to.

He considers trying to change the subject (would Ulysses like a hat?) but doesn't. Instead, he murmurs wryly, "The shitty things that I say to people." Iliya or Cameron are welcome to correct him, though.

"You bullyin' folks again?" Ulysses replies cheerfully as he settles into a slightly more comfortable position. A champagne flute dangles perilously loose in his fingers, and he takes a healthy swig of his drink — a glass of Crémant d'Alsace rosé that he desperately hopes no one else has seen him drink.

"Kickin' puppies? Metaphorically speaking." He points at Casper in mock-condemnation. "Not that I'd put it past you."

Ulysses does not believe that Casper would, under any circumstances, kick a little dog.

"I'd have to work my way up to puppies," Casper retorts wryly, "I should probably start small. Maybe with a skink." He would not, under any circumstances, kick a little dog or a skink.

"Well! Speaking of shitty," Ulysses says, gesturing exaggeratedly at the other boys as if to say 'Can you believe this?'

He knows Casper's kidding, of course, which is why he manages to stop himself from telling him to keep his hands (or feet) off of his baby like some kind of histrionic PTA mom. But it's a close call.

Iliya rolls his eyes. Casper is clearly going to wallow in self-pity instead of listening to Cameron, and Ulysses is about two steps away from reciting a numerical list of Rex's best qualities and personal accomplishments. "A girl likes Casper. He was rude. Now he worries she does not like him anymore, because he likes her." He raises his eyebrows at Casper. "Yes?"

Casper bristles, instantly defensive at Iliya's oversimplified assessment of the situation. "No," he returns tersely, "I don't..." He can't quite bring himself to say he doesn't like Gwen, though. He doesn't actually know how he feels. Except that he feels like an asshole after the way that last conversation had gone. And what had he expected his roommates to do about that? Suddenly, this all seems absurdly stupid. In frustration, he pulls off the cowboy hat Cameron had dropped onto his head. "It doesn't matter. She went with someone else and she'll be done with this before long. If she isn't already. I just feel like a prick. I shouldn't have brought it up."

"Calm down," Cameron says, waving his hand vaguely. "Y'all're being so dramatic." And he should know, he's an expert. "You should apologize to her. You feel bad, right? So that's simple." He kicks his feet lazily in the water. "Then you gotta decide if you like this mystery woman. So what if she went with someone else? It was just one dance, and she wanted to ask you to it first. Ask her on a date!"

When Casper removes his hat, Iliya fixes his own, after it had been hit askew by Ulysses. He imagines he looks ridiculous. For once, he doesn't mind.

His expression softens a little as he watches Casper and his obvious frustration. Cameron's advice is solid, and doesn't require elaboration. Even so. "She will not be 'done with this' so quickly. You are not easy to forget," Iliya says quietly. "But it is your choice alone how she remembers you."

While Casper would like to protest that he isn't being dramatic...he knows that he is. He can feel how tangled up he's become in doubt and how he wants to dwell on the situation. Find a way to solve it, even though he knows it doesn't work like that. Still. Cameron and Iliya could be right about Gwen's feelings toward him and there could still be time to act. Make the choices that might make the difference. If he wants to make them.

He gives a small nod. "I'll apologize," he agrees stiffly, "That's first. Then the rest." He tucks some of his dark hair behind one ear, then adds, "...Before the next party at the Grotto if I can. I told her I'd see her there." He is not about to mention that he'd promised he'd dance with her. His dark eyes flit in Cameron's direction, hoping to say it before he can, "Not a date."

"No one's gonna ask who we're talking about, huh?" Ulysses says to the group, the beginnings of a smirk tugging up one corner of his mouth.

He's got a sneaking suspicion that he knows the girl in question — although, he wouldn't feel confident making a guess outright, what with how half the school was nursing a crush on Casper at any given time. Or so Ulysses assumed, anyway; nothing was more fun than picking on a sourpuss, and you didn't get much more sour than their beloved prefect.

It's at this point that a very drunk Wilde enters the circle. He lurches in, resting an arm on Ulysses' shoulder and looking extremely fashionable -- sans the giant sombrero he was gifted earlier, of course, as that is now floating in the pool.

"What up," he says. "Is it me? You're totally talking about me, right?"

A joke. They obviously aren't. He's quiet, swaying, and asks for no catch up; he probably wouldn't be able to follow it anyway.

Cameron nods at Casper's conclusion. "Well, there's your plan! I like it. Taking it slow, nothing wrong with that. Gotta get a feel for each other." He nods. "Anyone else got any problems we should collectively solve?"

Cameron waves at Wilde enthusiastically upon his arrival, like he hasn't seen him in ages. "A girl's got a crush on Casper. He was just contemplating telling us who. Eventually. Maybe," Cameron explains. Ulysses has the beginnings of a smug expression, but Cameron can't quite tell if it means anything or if it's just his face. "If we get him drunk enough."

"Casper is already drunk," Iliya reminds him. For his part, he gives Wilde a very manly welcoming nod. He suspects he might be the most sober person here, and gets to work on finishing his drink. "We could try guessing. Many girls have a crush on Casper." He pauses. "And boys."

Oh, good call Iliya. Ulysses drains his glass in one long swallow and it's remarkable how quickly he feels it go to his head. "All right," he says once he's finished drinking. "20 questions, it is."

It's clear he's going to have way too much fun with this.

Wilde doesn't need another drink, but he takes one anyway. He grins brilliantly, half at the others and half at himself, then ventures a first question. "Is she in our year? Casper. A senior?"

Casper barely has time to give Wilde a glance and a welcoming nod of acknowledgment before the conversation (which had been, he had to admit, moderately helpful) deteriorates into a game. It happens before he can even protest and his dark eyes move from Cameron to Iliya to Ulysses to Wilde, narrowing. "I'm not drunk and I'm not telling you," he snaps, though he doesn't rise to make any kind of escape attempt just yet.

His mistake. This drink was stronger than Iliya thought. "Ah," he says, sounding totally unruffled by Casper's ire. Iliya looks over at Cameron. "You were right. We must get him drunk."

Cameron nods his agreement with Iliya. "You're right." He stands up, immediately regretting his bare, wet feet once he does. How does Austin do this all the time? "I'm going to get Casper another drink. Anybody else want anything?"

While not drunk enough to be pushed into giving up Gwen's name, Casper is drunk enough to momentarily consider the value of another drink. But no. Now he's feeling stubborn. When Cameron stands, he stands and shakes his head and states flatly, "Not happening."

"But whyyyyy?" Wilde drunkenly wheedles. Then he cracks up, amused by the resolute shake of Casper's head. Like. Very no. "Peer pressure."

"Molya te. Vodka and coke," Iliya requests. Sometimes Casper is quite effective in intimidating Iliya, but not while Ulysses, Cameron and Wilde are in the room. The five of them know each other too well now. "She must be a senior. Casper is eighteen, he would not consider a junior or younger."

Ulysses waves his empty glass in Cameron's direction. "Get me something nice," he instructs, leaving the further details up to his friend's discretion. He twists around to look up at the much, much taller boy. Squints up at his increasingly-blurry face. "Whatever Casper's drinking." He hopes this means champagne for both of them, but... maybe Casper needs some hard liquor.

Then, he turns back to the three of them that are still sitting. "I sure hope so," he says, in reply to Iliya's assertion. "'Cause I only know about... three juniors whose names I could guess."

Actually, he knows eight juniors, but close enough.
