ROUND THREE: Conquer the Maze!

You couldn't miss today's event if you'd tried. The entire atrium has been repurposed for the grand heist and much of the open area is blocked off by ominous modular walls, each of them stretching over eight feet tall - the freshmen insisted that none of the upperclassmen giants be able to spy on their work.

A set of ominous doors mark the entrance to this strange contraption. And just outside, a row of familiar briefcases wait on a table. Participants are asked to open their briefcases (and those who could not solve their puzzles last round are assisted by an especially smug freshman), because the key to solving this week's puzzle is waiting inside: a map. What's beyond the walls is the final event: a maze full of shifting pathways and frankly obnoxious traps. And somewhere, in the middle, the grand prize.

If you're going to pull this heist off, you'll need to conquer the maze.

Welcome to Round Three of Let’s Steal Prom!

HOW THIS WORKS

• Competitors are limited to those teams which previously signed up. In the first round, each team was presented with a set of cards listing their 'role' for the event. These roles are for flavor purposes only and have no effect on the final outcome.


• Stewart Ocean and his band of merry freshmen were still primarily responsible for this round, but Ursula did make sure nothing in the maze could seriously harm someone. If something seems too complicated for a freshman... assume staff helped.


• Post your pair under the THE MAZE heading, and play out a scene based on the current round's scenario. For every tag, Manx will RNG a number between 1–25 to add to your pair's score.


• Current Scenario: As soon as your team enters the maze, the wall closes behind them. That's not the only wall moving - every 30 seconds, the maze rearranges itself, but thankfully your map updates itself as well. Throughout the maze are trip wires, pressure plates, statues that resemble various staff members and magical proximity sensors that can trigger a variety of traps (see team assignments). At the end of the final hallway, there they are - a pair of crowns! Unfortunately there's a magical laser maze that has to be bested first and a team of eager looking freshmen perched high atop the maze walls ready to dump buckets of green slime if they hear the buzzing sound of one of the lasers being tripped. In a final twist, once obtained, the crowns explode in a burst of confetti and there's a note saying the winners will be announced at prom. In the distance, you can hear the sound of a wall opening. Have fun getting back out!


• Please note! This information is being provided for flavor purposes. There's no need to encounter all traps or actually reach the crowns. Just pick somewhere in the maze and have fun putzing around. All gas effects encountered last 1 minute.


• Up to 6 tags per pair will count for your score each round, i.e. you only get a maximum of six RNG numbers to add to your score. But feel free to tag more or less!


• Double jeopardy! Team lagging behind in the weekly rankings? At some point during the maze each team will encounter a door labeled "SHORTCUT???". Passing through this doorway could bring a team closer to their goal... or it could land them back at the start of the course. Teams that opt to try the shortcut will receive an additional RNG score between -50 and +50.


• The team with the fastest time through the maze will gain 5 bonus points.


• Scores for round 3 will be rolled on all tags posted through Friday, May 25th 11:59 PM EST. For the sake of suspense, third round rolls and results won't be revealed until prom. Scores from prior rounds will carry over.

"The map's changing again," Lucas says only a little exasperated as the drawing on the map starts to move and reform. On cue, a wall to their right shifts, blocking off their previous path and revealing a long, wide hall. Sure, it's all a game, but it still makes him uncomfortable in a way he can't quite express - that leaves him feeling a little embarrassed.

He doesn't show it. Lets his head loll to the side, instead, glancing at Bash out of the corner of his eye. "Well," Lucas inhales sharply through his nose. "This isn't ominous at all."

Escaping the hell that is freshmen is a strong motivator and somehow, either by superior map reading, or sheer dumb luck, January and Riley had managed to traverse the length of the maze, twice, in less than ten minutes. January casts some major side eye at the door labeled "SHORTCUT???" when they pass it again, instead turning left this time.

"You have got to be shitting me," she pouts in disgust. There's the laser maze. Just feet away from that stupid door. "If they don't give us a pair of crowns after this, I say we re—" Hiccup. Oh my gooooood, would they ever stop????? "—volt."

"The map keeps changing," Fern says, tracing her finger along what had been the best path to the center, and how lead to a dead end. "But I don't see any pattern to it. Just random. She spots someone up ahead. No, not a someone, a statue. "Hey, what's - Is that a statue of my dad? Fern asks as they get closer. Struck by a sudden idea, she passes the map to Heathcliff. "Hold this," she says, as she pulls a permanent marker out of her pocket with a smirk.

London holds the map in her outstretched arms. It's upside down. "You should be super good at this, right?" Navigating a maze is exactly like navigating the wilderness on the polygamist cult compound Quentin is from, right? "Sooo, this way?" she asks, pointing in a direction that definitely dead ends, at least for now.

"Easily the most nefarious torture they've come up with yet," Ursula agrees, trying to keep a straight face, but the corners of her mouth pull up at the sight of Ferdie waist deep in plastic balls. He'd been a good sport through all of this. It was sweet. She only regretted not having her cellphone on her to capture this moment forever.

She hesitates at the edge of the pit and then an impish smile slowly crosses her face. The sea of red and blue and yellow was filling her with a rush of childhood nostalgia. And it's just the two of them. No reason to not give into temptation. "Watch out. I'm going to jump in."

"The freshmen are just messing with us, then?" Heathcliff returns with a broad grin, "Shocker." That expression fades at the sight of the very tall, very stern Healer Mufferaw statue, though, and he gapes at it while Fern shoves the map into his hands. What are the chances of that? Maybe the freshmen are messing with them more than he'd thought.

It takes a moment for the girl's intentions to register in his head but, once they do, he laughs and hurries forward after her. "Need a leg up?"

Ari could've figured that Jade would be into a maze full of traps, even if they aren't particularly deadly ones. They're at least making pretty good time, and seem to have avoided a lot of the traps.

But when Jade pulls abruptly to one side, Ari goes too. They should get extra points for being so in tune with one another, even if it means that they're now both trapped under this net.

"Why is it sticky?" Ari laments, involuntarily shuddering at the feeling of it. She's very picky about mess and gross things touching her, and while this might not be as bad as falling face first into a mud puddle during tug-of-war, it's pretty bad. She tries to bat it off of their heads, but as she said - it is very sticky.

Riding on Jeffy's shoulder and gesticulating with tiny squirrel paws was MAYBE not the way that they were expected to complete this challenge as a pair. (It was, in fact, definitely not.) But teeny tiny clawed hands WERE better at scratching itchy skin and oh my GOSH she'd been so itchy??? That was like NOT a fun trap, freshmen!!! Essie would take a hundred more inks to the face first. Or, okay, at least FIFTY.

The floor starts to open and Essie figures they're about to get like SPIKED to death or SUPER BARBECUED because both of those seem like SUPER entertaining ways for freshmen to try to kill them. (She doesn't realize she should actually be worrying about FIRE ANTS.) But then there aren't death spikes or bursts of flame, there's... basically the greatest thing ever???

One second a small rodent is gliding off Jeffy's shoulder and disappearing into a pit of plastic balls, possibly never to be seen again, the next there's an explosion of plastic balls as a fully formed Essie bursts out from below the sea of them. She squints one eye shut and aims a red ball at Jeffy's forehead, "Bet you've been thinking a crown fer each of us, but I reckon I can put one on top of the other and make a MEGA CROWN all for myself."
