AMNESIA BUG

AMNESIA BUG

It's a somewhat dreary morning, with a light, misty rain all across campus. It's business as usual, though, except... some students are acting particularly forgetful today.

HOW THIS WORKS

  • Full symptoms will have set in by 11:30 AM. You can decide exactly when and how quickly your character is hit with the amnesia bug, i.e. from the time they wake up, or later in the morning.

  • Your characters have two brief windows in which to do amnesia things around campus: 7 AM-12 PM, before Mufferaw is certain what's happening, and 5:00-5:45 PM when there's a brief breakout.

  • Teachers are on high alert to make sure that none of the affected students are hurt or otherwise taken advantage of. They'll break up any canoodling that's not between people they know are a couple, and there will be no opportunities to have sex. Please just use this as your blanket OOC safety net: Staff will save your character from doing anything you don't want them to do.

  • Characters will be allowed to keep their journals while in quarantine.

  • They'll all be given a cure before bed.

  • Everyone affected is spending the night in the lodge.

  • In the morning, they'll wake up with all of their memories intact, including memories of what they did Saturday.

  • Memory loss is entirely defined by you. You do what works best for your character. It does not need to be consistent across characters.

  • However, the bug does not create new memories. Your character will not think they're a different person unless some outside influence successfully convinces them. And they'd need to be, like, ridiculously gullible.

  • Similarly, it does not take away skills, although your character may forget they have them. For instance, they might forget they can speak another language, but they still have the ability. No one will forget how to walk, talk, etc.

  • If you have any questions or are uncertain about something you want to do,
    just ask the mods!

» symptoms set in: When the infected wake up, they feel a little off. Forgetful. Small details escape them. Their short and long term memories are spotty. By 11:30 AM it's clear it's yet another plague, and everyone is going to enjoy another classic Gooseberry Quarantine.

» the lodge: quarantine: It's not long before all the infected students are gathered up by staff, and everyone's in quarantine by 12 PM. Because the infection is really more of a mild magical curse, it's easy to tell who's got it and who doesn't with a quick detection spell.
  • » the lodge: the infirmary: This is where Mufferaw would prefer you all be so he can keep an eye on you, but he can't entertain dozens of energetic teenagers in here.

  • » the lodge: the atrium: A portion of the atrium has been cordoned off, and the amnesiacs can access the Wii, the TV and the ping-pong table. Their friends can come visit them, but there's always a teacher on guard to make sure no one picks on the forgetful kids.

» breakout: After several hours locked in the lodge, Rafael "Definitely Not a Prefect" Ramirez gets impatient enough to stage a breakout. He waits until Healer Mufferaw takes a break and is replaced by Ms. Whittle, and then sends a freshmen to go ask her what Star Trek is. After that, he leads a number of interested students to the sole balcony they have access to, and reveals there's a rarely used fire escape that leads down to the shore.
  • If your character escapes: You have about 45 minutes of freedom before the teachers track everyone down again. Because no one's in their right mind, they won't give detention, but oh my god you're all so difficult.

  • For our sanity and everyone's comfort, if you plan on having anything uniquely bad happen to your character, please privately run it by the mods first. And let's just say everyone's too busy scattering and running to get up to any accidental amnesia cheating, hm?

» the next morning: remembering: Everyone wakes up Sunday morning feeling a little bleary. All of their memories are back, as well as the memories of how they behaved yesterday.

» OOC - What's going on with your character: If you want, briefly describe OOC the state your character's in and what they forgot.

» OOC - Questions, comments, concerns!

Bash has a minor crisis. As usual. (Open)

It's Saturday. Of that much, Guppy is absolutely certain. And on Saturdays, as a general rule, a person is allowed to remain sprawled like a starfish on top of the most conveniently located horizontal surface available to them until such a time that something downstairs explodes/another small human being lands on the center of their chest/they awaken from natural causes.

This particular Saturday happens to be a natural causes sort of Saturday and his lazy move to pluck at the neck of his t-shirt encounters something warm and fuzzy and largely unexpected. He makes a strangled noise and skitters sideways, tangling himself in the sheets and falling straight off the edge of the bed in a ungraceful heap - the kitten, for her troubles, jumps about a foot straight into the air. (Which, whoa, impressive. Or, rather, would've been impressive if his face hadn't been very busy making acquaintance with the wooden flooring panels.)

What the - No. Where the fuck -

He rolls himself over with a groan and nice. There's a semi-decent view through the window from his current position. It is a view of trees. More trees than people are often led to believe by the highly misleading title of Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Which, yeah. A tree does. But significantly less trees than that.

Holy shit, he is at Rich Kid School. Rich Kid School, surrounded by trees. How did - No. No, wait. Of course he's at Rich Kid School. He got a Poor, Smart Kid Scholarship. His momma is very proud of him and he has roommates that aren't biologically related to him. There are a disproportionate amount of trees to human beings here and the air smells like an advertisement for Pine Sol or maybe something legitimately fresh and clean, but this is totally fine.

That happened when? Last week? Right? Yes? No. (Possibly?)

A glance at his arm reveals messy block letters informing him: rounds tomorrow, find gabi at breakfast. Fuck, he definitely missed breakfast. Who the fuck is Gabi? Why is he 'Memento' tattooing himself about circles? Multiple circles? Who's cat is in his bed? (If it belongs to one of his roommates, are they going to be mad at him for sleeping with it? In a very literal and not at all - Huh. When did he get this shirt?)

He peeks up over the edge of the bed. The kitten peers back at him, cleaning it's face and looking offended.

"M'sorry?" he squeaks, reaching a set of fingers backward to rub at the back of his head, not so subtly checking for injuries and even less subtly smashing his hair back down against his skull. (It's longer than it was yesterday. Like - it was definitely shaved yesterday? Holy shit. What the actual fuck. This is 'Memento.' He may or may not have killed his wife with insulin shots. He also may or may not have stolen someone's cat. What the fuck.)

Something weird was going on. Breakfast was weird, the journals were weird, and there seemed to be something happening with people's memories. Isabelle was absolutely fine, she felt no different than she had the night before and was silently thanking her lucky stars that she had decided not to go to the party last night. She didn't know either of the birthday boys and it seemed silly to go when you didn't know the people the party was even for. Now, it was even better she didn't go - that place was a cesspool for plagues. The newest one seemed to be making people forget who they were. That was extremely concerning, and Isabelle realized she had not yet seen a couple of her housemates.

Sure, it was early when she went to breakfast (before some people, anyway) and it hadn't been that long but she wouldn't be Isabelle if she didn't worry. Leaving her shared room with the other Ebongirls, she wandered across the way to the Sophomore boys cabin. She heard what sounded like a thump and some mumbling she couldn't altogether decipher through the door. No one was dead or anything, that was clear, or there would be yelling, right? She felt her face flush with warmth as the anxiety took over for a minute, and she shoved it down as she lifted her hand to knock on the boys' door.

"Is anyone in there? Are you okay?" She called, her voice full of concern.

The rap of fingers against the door startles a yelp out of him, and a full-body jolt. (The kitten stares placidly. Which is, frankly, super judgmental coming from someone who did the same thing no less than five minutes ago. Just saying.) He gets his legs underneath himself and drags the sheets with him on his doorward journey, the kitten stalking its way after the trailing material.

'Are you okay?' is one of those questions that was up to interpretation had variable responses. Like - he wasn't bleeding? Nothing vital to immediate survival was broken?

He weighs his response options as he turns the doorknob, peering through the gap and blinking at the girl on the other side of it. He - wow, he has no idea who this is. Is that rude? Is this breakfast-Gabi? Does he have more people-identifying tattoos on other parts of his body? Would it be weird to check his stomach for upside-down instructions?

"That question has variable responses," he says instead. Though this, undoubtedly, is the wrong one.

Isabelle can't help but laugh at his response. He wasn't wrong, that question was pretty open ended and had a lot of different ways it could be responded to. When the door opened, she smiled and nodded. "I know." Glancing through the room, she could tell no one else was there except Bash and the kitten.

"So first response: Are you okay in the sense that you are not physically hurt in any way? And then secondarily, are you okay in the sense that you feel fine? Do you know what day it is? What year? Where you are?"

Of course, she knew that was a lot of questions for such a short amount of time and while they were both Sophomores, both Ebonhide and in several classes together, Isabelle had only been there for this year and she was not particularly close with anyone other than Ivy and Laurel. She wasn't sure on a normal occasion he would answer this many questions.

However, today was not normal and she wanted to make sure her cabin and year mates in her house were alright. She wasn't sure yet if she was the only one who wasn't affected yet.
