AMNESIA BUG

It's a somewhat dreary morning, with a light, misty rain all across campus. It's business as usual, though, except... some students are acting particularly forgetful today.

HOW THIS WORKS

Full symptoms will have set in by 11:30 AM. You can decide exactly when and how quickly your character is hit with the amnesia bug, i.e. from the time they wake up, or later in the morning.

Your characters have two brief windows in which to do amnesia things around campus: 7 AM-12 PM, before Mufferaw is certain what's happening, and 5:00-5:45 PM when there's a brief breakout.

Teachers are on high alert to make sure that none of the affected students are hurt or otherwise taken advantage of. They'll break up any canoodling that's not between people they know are a couple, and there will be no opportunities to have sex. Please just use this as your blanket OOC safety net: Staff will save your character from doing anything you don't want them to do.

Characters will be allowed to keep their journals while in quarantine.

They'll all be given a cure before bed.

Everyone affected is spending the night in the lodge.

In the morning, they'll wake up with all of their memories intact, including memories of what they did Saturday.

Memory loss is entirely defined by you. You do what works best for your character. It does not need to be consistent across characters.

However, the bug does not create new memories. Your character will not think they're a different person unless some outside influence successfully convinces them. And they'd need to be, like, ridiculously gullible.

Similarly, it does not take away skills, although your character may forget they have them. For instance, they might forget they can speak another language, but they still have the ability. No one will forget how to walk, talk, etc.

» symptoms set in: When the infected wake up, they feel a little off. Forgetful. Small details escape them. Their short and long term memories are spotty. By 11:30 AM it's clear it's yet another plague, and everyone is going to enjoy another classic Gooseberry Quarantine.

» the lodge: quarantine: It's not long before all the infected students are gathered up by staff, and everyone's in quarantine by 12 PM. Because the infection is really more of a mild magical curse, it's easy to tell who's got it and who doesn't with a quick detection spell.

» the lodge: the infirmary: This is where Mufferaw would prefer you all be so he can keep an eye on you, but he can't entertain dozens of energetic teenagers in here.

» the lodge: the atrium: A portion of the atrium has been cordoned off, and the amnesiacs can access the Wii, the TV and the ping-pong table. Their friends can come visit them, but there's always a teacher on guard to make sure no one picks on the forgetful kids.

» breakout: After several hours locked in the lodge, Rafael "Definitely Not a Prefect" Ramirez gets impatient enough to stage a breakout. He waits until Healer Mufferaw takes a break and is replaced by Ms. Whittle, and then sends a freshmen to go ask her what Star Trek is. After that, he leads a number of interested students to the sole balcony they have access to, and reveals there's a rarely used fire escape that leads down to the shore.

If your character escapes: You have about 45 minutes of freedom before the teachers track everyone down again. Because no one's in their right mind, they won't give detention, but oh my god you're all so difficult.

For our sanity and everyone's comfort, if you plan on having anything uniquely bad happen to your character, please privately run it by the mods first. And let's just say everyone's too busy scattering and running to get up to any accidental amnesia cheating, hm?

» the next morning: remembering: Everyone wakes up Sunday morning feeling a little bleary. All of their memories are back, as well as the memories of how they behaved yesterday.

There it is again. That name. Avery. She feels nothing when he says the name but that's twice now. "Are you - are you the one from the book thing?" She asks, pointing at it still open, the conversation between them visible.

"Where the hell am I?"

Xavier nods, his smile pulling a bit to one side. He steps close enough to point at his own handwriting on the page, and the name that appears beneath it. "That's me: book guy. See? Xavier Lewis. Here to help!"

"You're safe, good. You seemed real upset in the journal. Do you really not...remember anything?" He rubs the back of his head with his hand. Xavier is not much of a crisis counselor. "I donno what's goin' on, but a teacher can help. Will you come with me? We'll find someone."

When he steps closer, she takes the smallest of steps back. He isn't going for her, though, so she stops and peeks forward at the name that appeared beside the writing. Xavier Lewis. Didn't ring a bell, but then again, nothing really did.

She wiped her face a little, trying to get rid of the dried tears and stop new ones from coming. He seemed together. Not like the rude guy on the journals, or the one saying they were all in a dream or something. "Is my name Avery?" She asks, moving a little closer to him. He'd said teacher, not healer or whatever this time. That lined up with rude guy saying it was a school.

"I'll go with you. And... no, I don't remember anything."

"Yep! Avery Davenport, see." He produces his own journal from his back pocket, flips to the page where their conversation took place, and gestures to her name beneath her handwriting. He offers her another friendly smile, "You're at Gooseberry High. You're a student. Captain of the best quidditch team in the school. And we're gonna go find Mr. Hightower. He's the head of our house, he'll know what to do."

Xavier takes a step back. "C'mon."

She looks back, comparing the handwriting. That was definitely her handwriting, and somehow next to her handwriting the name appeared. Avery Davenport. That sounded like a pretty cool name, didn't it? And this was Xavier Lewis. In the ten minutes she'd been waiting here, someone said he was her boyfriend. He was cute, if she was thinking about it objectively. Which she was not, because nothing made sense and all the words he said aside from school and student made no sense to her.

"Uhm. Well that makes me sound really neat." She says, closing her own journal thing and clutching it to her chest. "I talked to some other people here, I think. Since now I know this isn't my imagination. They keep lying." She frowned, unsure of who to believe. "Someone said you were my boyfriend. But that's not true, right? Someone else said I don't have a boyfriend." She sighed. This was all very confusing, and if she did go to this school, she was honestly disappointed at how mean the other kids were.

"This is really a school?"

Xavier's eyes go a little wide and then he winces. The boyfriend question doesn't catch him completely off guard, though. He hadn't seen the conversation, but Reid had already mentioned it to him. Silently, he thanks Reid for the warning. "No, Avery, I'm not. I'm just a friend."

The change of subject comes as an absolute blessing, and Xavier exhales heavily. "Yeah, Gooseberry Alternative High School. It's a great place." As he speaks, he scans the atrium for any signs of a teacher, then turns his attention to his journal, flipping through to see if anyone's outlined a plan, yet.

She noticed the look on his face, and immediately felt bad about it. A blush rose to her cheeks, feeling embarrassed. She briefly wondered if they had interacted much before and if she had done something to warrant such a reaction, but she can't place anything. It was getting increasingly frustrating. Maybe he just didn't want to hurt her feelings. Who knows. "Oh, okay. Good. I mean - never mind, forget it."

Gooseberry Alternative High School. Sounded about right. Alternative High School. What did that even mean? It only increased her fears that she really was crazy. This guy didn't seem crazy, but some of the others she had spoken to definitely seemed... certifiable. "Why is it Alternative? I don't know if it seems great... people are mean here."

"Naw, really, everybody's good people. It's just that, um, adolescent brains are--" She does not care about some study you half-read on the internet over spring break, Xavier. "It's just sometimes teenagers are assholes. This is a really good school, though. There are really good people here. Everyone's real gifted - or their parents pay a boatload. That's why it's 'alternative'."

He scratches the back of his head. Failing to spot a responsible-looking adult, he begins leading Avery toward the infirmary. "I'm gonna drop you off with Mufferaw, cuz I told our friend Ivy that I'd help her break up a fight at the Ornery Oak. Mufferaw looks grumpy but he's a real cool dude."

"Everyone is good people but there are fights breaking out at something basically called the bad-tempered tree and a couple of girls - I think - lied to me about being a queen, having a boyfriend, living underwater, and some guy named Casey called me dumb several times. Sounds extremely charming and like everyone is super good people." Normally, Avery is not so combative. She isn't even remotely argumentative and prefers to just kind of nod out of anything that might escalate into a confrontation.

But she is NOT buying it and she does NOT remember being that girl, so here she is clearly in disbelief that this definitely not her boyfriend dude thinks this place is full of good people. She was starting to doubt his story about this being a school at all. Now she was being taken to some grumpy looking adult. Sounded wonderful. "I hope you don't get punched breaking up the fight."

Xavier can't help it. A laugh escapes him. "Yeah it's pretty fucked up, huh? But trust me, it's a good place. Just...right now? A little bonkers. And don't worry. I'm good at taking hits."

It's hardly a walk at all to the infirmary. Just down a hall. Xavier shows Avery inside and hangs around for a few minutes longer. "You'll be okay." He reassures her before heading off to help intercept the Fight of the Century before it begins.

"I guess I'll just have to take your word for it. You don't seem like you're lying." She shrugs, though she's still frowning. Xavier and Olivia, they at least seemed like good people? But how could she even be sure of that? Avery didn't know herself, so she couldn't even really trust her instincts here. Maybe they were all wrong.

She follows closely because even though it's like right there, she didn't know that. Once she's there, she turns to Xavier and gives him a half-smile. "Thanks. Um. Hope everything works out."
